On a cold day in January a Ford truck pulled into my auto repair shop towing a trailer. On the back was this 1959 Porsche 356A Super convertible D.  It was owned by an old customer of mine who purchased it when he lived in California in 1966. He moved back here to Massachusetts in 1970 and parked it in his barn. There it sat until 1985 when he trailered it out to us to get it running. We did so and he then trailered it back to his barn where it sat for another 29 years. A few weeks ago it showed up here once again. This time for sale. I spent a few hours tinkering with, put in a battery, fresh gas, oil and a set of points. It cranked over, sputtered, spit out a pile of acorns and seeds from the muffler and then started up. I ran it just long enough to make sure that the engine was good and then shut it down. I have the California title from 1966 (pink slip) and 3 registration receipts from 1966-1070 for the black/yellow California plate that is currently on it. I have checked with PCNA and the convertible D registry and they have both confirmed that the engine and transmission are original. The engine lid latch has the correct 75 stamped in it as does the engine lid and the top frame. I could not see any numbers stamped on the doors. The front hood handle is missing, the tool kit is missing and the original bumpers are missing. It seems that removing the bumpers was a cool thing to do in California back then. To bad. Most everything else is present. The original convertible top is intact including the plastic rear window. The lights and horn do work. Spare wheel has the original 1959 date stamp. I have 4 NOS Pirelli tires that go with it as well. A couple interesting options are the radio, drivers side sun visor and locking pockets on the left and right door panels. The brakes do work but the master cylinder leaks. I have a couple boxes with misc trim as well as the door panels and side windows. I found 3 old maps in the door pocket of San Francisco, San Jose and LA. There was also an owners manual for a 356B. The original leather strap for the spare tire is present as is the Bilstein jack. There is one rust hole in the floor just in front of the passengers feet area. For a long time it has been home to dust and mice but it deserves better. I would consider partial trades of anything interesting.

2014 Porsche 911 Targa takes its crop-top off in Motor City

Mon, 13 Jan 2014

Back in 1965, Porsche invented the 911 Targa as a matter necessity. Believing that a finicky National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was prepared to outlaw convertibles, the innovative automaker created the half-open car as a way to keep wind rushing through owners' hair. Though far removed from those formative days, it seems as though the 2015 Porsche 911 Targa has come to the Detroit Auto Show with a new-school version of some old-school tech.
While the last Targa featured a trick sliding glass roof at the touch of the button, the new car dramatically swallows a traditional-looking panel via an exceptionally complex-looking mechanical operation. The net result is "the same fun factor and freedom" that can be had with a complete convertible, though with slightly more open-driving protection while underway.
And, as is the case with all of the current 911 range, getting underway can be done with reasonable rapidity. The entry-level Targa 4 rocks a 350-horsepower, 3.4-liter flat-six engine just behind the rear axle, making that car good for 175 miles per hour at the top end (with the seven-speed manual, 174 mph with PDK) and a 0-to-60 sprint of 4.6 seconds. The Targa 4S, meanwhile, offers 400 horsepower from 3.8-liters of boxer six, runs to 60 in 4.2 seconds and hits a top "track speed" of 183 mph.

Porsche busts out new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS

Wed, 19 Mar 2014

Baby 911. The poor man's Porsche. That's what they called the Boxster when it debuted some 20 years ago. They said the same of the first Cayman when it arrived a decade later, but they stopped saying it when the latest iterations hit the scene two years ago. That's because Zuffenhausen's entry-level models have long since stepped out of their big brother's shadow and into their own. And that's all the more true of the new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS.
Based on the Boxster S and Cayman S, the new GTS models benefit from an enhanced 3.4-liter flat six that produces 330 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque in the roadster or 340 hp and 280 lb-ft in the coupe - representing an increase of 15 hp and 7 lb-ft in either model. Both also come with the Sport Chrono package as standard, along with adjustable suspension and 20-inch alloys, blacked out to match the dynamic headlight surrounds and other muted trim.
Those disappointed by the unavailability of a manual transmission in the fire-prone 911 GT3 will be pleased to note that a six-speed manual comes standard, but those enamored of letting a pair of clutches shift themselves seamlessly will want to spring for the optional seven-speed DCT. So equipped and with launch control engaged, the Boxster GTS will rocket from a standstill to 62 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds, while the incrementally lighter, more powerful Cayman will hit it in 4.6. Either way you're looking at a third of a second quicker than the Boxster/Cayman S. There's also a 20-millimeter lowered suspension on offer for track-day enthusiasts.

Porsche would have entered F1 if Audi had blocked its Le Mans program

Thu, 13 Mar 2014

Go back a few years and you may have heard rumors of Porsche heading into Formula One. That never came to pass - or at least, it hasn't yet - but that doesn't mean that it wasn't close to happening. That's how committed to returning to top-level motorsport competition Porsche has become recently.
Autosport reports that just as Porsche was merging fully into the Volkswagen Group, Zuffenhausen was weighing its options for a factory racing program. Le Mans was its favorite, which makes sense, as it remains far and away the most successful constructor in the history of the famous endurance race. But the strategists at Porsche were worried that its new corporate overlords at Volkswagen wouldn't support two LMP1 programs and would favor Audi, which has positively dominated the modern era of endurance racing, coming second only to Porsche in the number of Le Mans victories it has scored to date.
Porsche's Plan B was reportedly to head into Formula One, although it isn't clear if the German automaker was intent on starting its own team, buying an existing one or merely providing engines to other teams. Porsche fielded its own cars in F1 in the late 1950s and early 60s, and returned as an engine supplier with TAG to power McLaren in the 1980s, powering Niki Lauda and Alain Prost to the World Championship in 1984 and 1985.
