Rare 71 Pontiac Gto 455 Project Many Options With Phs! on 2040-cars

Year:1971 Mileage:48000
Location:

Auburn, New York, United States

Auburn, New York, United States

Up for bid is a Real rare (1 of 534 out of 9k total gto's in 71) 242 1971 GTO has been off road for 20 years, car is very complete but in need of a full restoration, I will be very descriptive, but please ask any and all questions or come see the car before you bid! Drivetrain looks to be original, car starts, and moves on it's own but NOT driveable in its current state. PHS docs verify the following options...455/325hp, TH400 trans, 12 bolt rear 3:07 open (gears not verified), factory A/C, power disc brakes, power steering, rally gauge cluster, power windows, tinted glass, rally 2 wheels, buckets and console, and AM radio.  It also has rear sway bar and boxed trailing arms, and is in it's original color scheme.

Mechanical... TO THE BEST of my knowledge the engine, trans, and rear are original to the car, BUT I am not the Pontiac guru so you be the judge. The block is a YC code (see pic) that verifies it to be a 455, the casting number is 485428, which is also 455, but I havent located the casting date. The heads are #66, which are 71 only, and are dated H 27 0, and H26 0, intake is 481733, carb is a rochester replacement for this ap. I put a Holley on it  with a gas can just to show you it runs, it starts and idles, has some chatter, I would rebuild it if I restored the car. The trans goes into forward and reverse. Most of the A/C items are in place. Car has headers and full exhaust in good shape. Engine is orange for some reason, clean inside, and looks to be original breather also included.

Body...needs floor pans, and trunk pan, frame is solid and no past repairs, rear crosspart, looks to have been tugged on but should be fixable or changeable. There is rust/rot around front and rear windows, hood may or may not be repairable, core support decent, doors, fenders and 1/4's can be repaired or replaced depending on your level of resto. Doors open and shut nice.

Car was delivered to City Motors Sales Co in Passaic, NJ and looks to have spent most it's life there. AGAIN this car needs a FULL resto and may be too much work for a rookie. Please be serious if you bid, bidders with less than 10 good feedbacks contact me before you bid or be cancelled.     Title is clear and car is sold AS IS Where is. Mileage shows 48,xxx, may not be original.

Total payment due in 5 days, car to be picked up within 10 days unless other arrangements are made.  $300 deposit by paypal in 48 hrs, prefer cash balance at pickup. Car and title not released until paid in full and funds are clear.  Low Reserve, no buy it now, but open to offers, auction may end at anytime.

Code on rear end is WT  K  252.

GM reintroduces Tripower name in the worst way possible

Wed, Aug 1 2018

The story of General Motors' use of the Tripower moniker begins way back in 1957, when Semon E. "Bunkie" Knudsen, then General Manager of GM's Pontiac division, directed his engineers to inject more performance into his brand's line of V8-powered automobiles. Fuel injection was an option, but hot rodders flocked instead to Tri-Power (marketed way back when with a hyphen), which grafted a trio of two-barrel Rochester carburetors onto a single intake manifold. A legend was born. And that legend was born of performance. At idle and when full power wasn't required, Pontiac's Tri-Power system used just the middle carburetor, which helped make the setup easier to tune. Depending on the year and model, either a vacuum system or a mechanical linkage opened up the two outer carbs, thereby switching from two barrels to six, and allowing the engine to take in more fuel and air. And it was an easy marketing win – six barrels is better than four barrels, right? Because performance! So, when news filtered in that GM has resurrected the Tripower name, those of us who grew up attending classic car shows and wrenching on old Pontiacs did a double-take. And then we all collectively sighed. Turns out that today's Tripower refers to a trio of fuel-saving measures that include cylinder deactivation, active thermal management, and intake valve lift control, according to Automotive News. And, at least for now, it applies to GM's line of fullsize trucks powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We're all for saving fuel whenever possible. And we have zero say in how any automaker chooses to market its products and technologies. But, we'll offer our two cents anyway: Relaunching a storied name from the past is fine. Relaunching a storied name from the past while completely overlooking the reasons the name got famous in the first place is only going to irritate the people who remember the name in the first place. Couldn't they just call this new technology package something else? Junkyard Gem: 1987 Pontiac Safari Station Wagon

Tue, Aug 9 2016

During the 1960s and 1970s, station wagons based on full-sized Detroit sedans were the default family haulers, and many of those Kingswood Estates and Country Squires and Ambassadors came with unapologetically phony woodgrain-printed exterior paneling and trim. By the late 1980s, however, few were snapping up such wagons, making this '87 Safari that I spotted in a Denver yard an interesting find. Power for this wagon came from a 307-cubic-inch Oldsmobile V8 making 140 horsepower. General Motors used this engine in Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Chevrolets, Pontiacs, and Cadillacs, finally discontinuing production for the 1990 model year. Was the "wood" convincing, even when new? Of course not, but it was a cherished American tradition. Related Video: Featured Gallery 1987 Pontiac Safari station wagon in Colorado junkyard View 18 Photos Auto News Pontiac station wagon

Pontiac could be a phoenix rising from the ashes

Tue, Apr 18 2017

Of the deceased American car companies from the past 50 years such as Hummer, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Plymouth and Saturn, I believe the most worthy resurrection would be Pontiac. After all, it's no longer politically correct to drive an ex-military vehicle with single-digit gas mileage, nor do Millennials and Gen-Xers desire AARP-associated nameplates such as Mercury or Oldsmobile. Pontiac was originally founded in 1893 by Albert G. North and Harry G. Hamilton as the Pontiac Buggy Company, due to their location in Pontiac, Michigan. But as the early 1900s automotive revolution took off, they shifted their focus from horse-drawn carriages to motorized transportation. Taking a cue from Oakland County where they were based, they rebranded their organization as the Oakland Motor Company. Within a couple years, sales of Oakland cars were so good that it caught the attention of General Motors and they bought the company. In 1926, GM premiered the first Pontiac and its name drew inspiration from the legendary Native American War Chief, who was famous for the Battle of Bloody Run and opposition of British forces. His likeness was used in early promotional materials as well as the vehicle's emblem which was referred to simply as the "Indian Head". In 1956, the outdated emblem was replaced with a new, sleeker logo that resembled a red arrow head. It was known as "The Dart" and featured a singular star in the center which may have been a nod to Pontiac's successful Star Chief model. The 1960s saw the introduction of several popular models such as the GTO and the Firebird. The GTO was initially offered as an option package on the 1964 Tempest, and the name was the brainchild of John Delorean, who would later go on to form his own eponymous automobile company. The Firebird debuted in 1967 as a pony-car foil to Ford's award-winning Mustang. Although mechanically similar to Chevrolet's Camaro, the Firebird boasted a distinct sheetmetal nose and tail to help visually distinguish it. The 1980s were another adventurous time for Pontiac, and GM took advantage of the sales momentum by running a successful ad campaign. It proclaimed "We Build Excitement" and highlighted an arrangement with musicians Daryl Hall and John Oats. The fiery Fiero was a home-run for Pontiac and it was introduced in 1983 as an '84 model. Not only was it the first U.S. produced mid-engine sports coupe, but it also utilized lightweight, dent-resistant body panels.
