1966 Pontiac GTO Coupe: The GTO became its own model in 1966, rather than an option package on the Pontiac Tempest. The result was almost 100,000 sales, the highest recorded for the GTO during a single year. The car's
Coke-bottle styling, split mesh grille, and stacked headlights added up to a classic design with broad appeal. And the engine selections didn't hurt, with the top selection being the 389 Tri-Power (available with or without Ram Air
for the first time), which was rated at a rattling 360 horsepower and shakin' 424 lb ft of torque. Pontiac knew that even though GM banned sanctioned racing, many young men were driving their GTOs to drag strips to see the wild
altered-wheelbase Mopars and over-the-top Fords. The answer? The GeeTo Tiger campaign! Using a pair of 'modified' Tiger Gold GTOs and a challenge to race the famed Tiger, fans packed the stands to see the pair of GTO's race at tracks
nationwide. To say the campaign was a success is an understatement, and when final numbers were tallied, the GTO garnered record sales with nearly 96,946 sold, representing over 11 percent of Pontiac's total units for the model year.
This first-year Reef Turquoise GTO truly looks as good in person as it does in photos! And driving this beauty is every thing you would expect ...plus a dozen surprise "thumbs-ups" from fellow enthusiasts. This Pontiac has always been garage kept, retains it's factory originality, has a solid/straight/rust-free body, and has seen less than 71k miles of asphalt since new. The only area that required attention upon arrival was the interior which just received new carpets, bucket seats, and a package tray this month. All these factors paired with regular service from its owners result in the beautiful GTO offered here today. Features include; 389 V8 (360hp) Tri-Power, Console Automatic, Power Steering, Factory AM/FM Radio, Dual Exhaust, Spare Tire w/ Cover, Original Tire Tools, Factory 14" Rally Wheels, and Thick BF Goodrich Radial T/A 225/70R14 Tires. If there is any doubt about the upward direction these Pontiac values are going, we ask you please note that all current collector guides list this GTO at over double our asking price. If you want the easy route ...NADA ($71,625), KBB ($71,280), and Hagerty ($68,400). As you will see in the photos below, this is an exceptional classic GTO that can be purchased for only $34,988! General Motors Recalls Nearly 780,000 Cars To Fix Deadly Problem
Thu, Feb 13 2014General Motors is recalling nearly 780,000 compact cars in North America because the engines can shut down unexpectedly and cause crashes. The company says six people have been killed in crashes related to the problem. The recall affects Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s from the 2005 through 2007 model years. U.S. safety regulators say the weight of the key ring and rough roads can move the ignition switch out of the run position, cutting the engine and electricity. If that happens, air bags may not work. GM says there have been 22 crashes from the problem. All happened at high speeds. Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free. GM says owners should remove nonessential items from key rings until the problem is fixed. Junkyard Gem: 1992 Pontiac Firebird
Mon, Dec 18 2023Last spring, this series featured a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS in a Northern California junkyard, an example of the final model year for the highly successful third-generation GM F-Body. On a later visit to that yard, I spotted the Pontiac sibling to that car, a Firebird that was born the same year at the same Southern California factory. When the Chevrolet Division introduced the first Camaro as a 1967 model, the Pontiac Division got its own version of the F-Body called the Firebird. While the two cars were built on the same chassis and looked very similar, the first-generation Camaros got Chevrolet engines while their Firebird colleagues got Pontiac engines (including the innovative SOHC straight-six). The 1970-1981 second-generation Firebirds still had some Pontiac-only engines, but Chevrolet and Oldsmobile power crept under some hoods during that period. The third-generation Firebirds first appeared as 1982 models, and they drew from near-identical stockpiles of GM running gear (including the distinctly agricultural Iron Duke four-banger, which could be considered a Pontiac-derived engine). When the Camaro got the axe after 2002, the Firebird's neck was put on the same chopping block. When the Camaro returned for 2010, the Pontiac brand was sputtering to an agonized halt during its final year and there was no chance of the Firebird's return. This car is a fairly ordinary coupe, though it does have the mid-grade 205-horsepower 5.0-liter Chevrolet small-block V8 instead of the base 140-horse 3.1-liter V6. A 5.7-liter small-block was available as well. A five-speed manual transmission was base equipment, but few Americans wanted a three-pedal setup by the early 1990s. This car has the optional four-speed automatic. The MSRP with 5.0 engine, automatic transmission and air conditioning (which this car has) started at $14,304. That's about $31,868 in 2023 dollars. It was built at Van Nuys Assembly in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. By the dawn of the 1990s, the Camaros and Firebirds made at Van Nuys Assembly had become known as the worst-built GM cars made in North America, and the plant was shut down forever soon after this car was built. Today, a shopping mall lives where the factory once stood. This car managed to drive more than 150,000 miles during its life, so it beat the odds. The thrid-gen F-Body was pretty antiquated by the early 1990s, but the fourth-gen cars handled better and looked up-to-date for the era.
This massive 'Knight Rider' KITT model costs over $1,400
Tue, May 18 2021A new model of the famed Pontiac Firebird from the 1980s TV show Knight Rider is here, and it's massive. The shadowy flight into the dangerous world of this subscription-based kit by DeAgostini will result in a car that measures nearly two feet long, cost more than $1,400, and take you over two years to complete. For years, subscription-based model kits have been a tradition for hobbyists in Europe and Asia. Should you sign on, each week you'll receive a package in the mail that includes a few parts for the model and some literature on the subject. Usually there are additional collectibles and accessories, like a display case. The DeAgostini KITT kit, for example, begins with the hood for the first issue. The asymmetric bulged and scooped body panel comes with a several smaller body pieces and a small screwdriver. Issue two comes with the front fascia, KITT's red scanner light, and three of the six driving lights. Issue three gives you a tire, wheel and brake components for one of the four corners. And so it goes. When all is said and done, you'll receive 110 such packages over a span of so many weeks. In other words it'll take two years and one-and-a-half months to complete the black, 1:8 scale Pontiac. There are some discounted prices for the first few issues to get you hooked, but once you get settled in the regular price for each issue is ˆ10.99 ($13.36 USD). Here's a preview the 16-page pamphlet that accompanies the first issue. By the end, you should have a pretty comprehensive compendium of the Knight Rider series as well. The issues are available on newsstands, but subscribers get additional gifts — two 1:43 scale models, one of KITT and one of his nemesis KARR. And for an additional ˆ1.00 per issue, you'll receive an acrylic display case. As for the Knight Industries Two Thousand itself, the car appears to be incredibly detailed. As depicted on the DeAgostini website, the hood, doors, trunk and T-top roof panels all open. The red scanner lights up, the rear license plate rotates for three options, and there even seems to be a watch that commands the model to speak some of KITT's catch phrases. Knight Rider — or Supercar as it was called in Italy — told the episodic story of a former police officer, Michael Knight, who fought crime with his A.I.-powered car. As such, the TV car and the the model have a heavily computerized (by 1980s standards) dashboard and yoke steering wheel.
