1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible

National GTOAA 1996 Second Place Show Winner in popular vote class for '64-'65 convertibles.

Sapphire Blue with parchment white interior and white top.

Colorado car always (15-20% humidity annually); built in Kansas City GM plant and sold at Denver dealership in 1964.

Matching numbers 389 Carter four barrel engine disassembled ready for rebuild; extra 389 included for spare parts if necessary; 1970 400ci four barrrel presently in car. Three speed 400 turbo hydromatic automatic tansmission.

Frame up restoration done in 1996, undercarriage completely sand blasted and zinc chromate coated.

Immaculate body work with zero rust.

Paint is 1992 GM Sapphire Blue; it is in great shape and is very close to the original midnight blue. It could be changed to original color with no body work and only minor prep work if desired.

All the paint in the interior was formulated to be completely original because we were able to find samples from the dashboard and convertible top frame that had not been faded by sunlight.

The interior has been completely restored with parchment white vinyl. The original vinyl was blue. All seat frames were disassembled and zinc chromate coated then reassembled with new springs and padding.

A/C works

All engine compartment, interior and dashboard wiring has been done to completely original concourse condition.

Factory optional wood steering wheel; I have the original steering wheel also.

Power brakes have been updated to dual master cylinder and disc brakes in front with stainless steel brake lines throughout. I have all the original front brake parts and master cylinder.

Power steering has been converted to a close ratio that takes 2.5 turns, lock to lock, rather than the original 4.5 turns. This was done by the company that did all the steering box gearing for NASCAR/Winston Cup at the time. They only did about five percent of their business with the general public like me. The steering box looks no different than stock. It drives and handles great!

The fifteen year old restoration shows only slight wear. This is an above average car. The brake and steering modifications make it very drivable. It could be made into concourse condition without a great deal of work.

Wanted: 1967 Pontiac GTO for a special Father's Day

Thu, 07 Jun 2012

Jim Sharp of Elkhorn, Wisconsin needs a red 1967 Pontiac GTO to make his dad's Father's Day, possibly his last one, something extra special.
Back in the '60s, Jim's dad, Ken, drove a cherry red 1967 GTO to California for a job. He met a girl, got married and decided his wife's 1965 Ford Mustang was more fuel efficient than the Goat and the GTO was sold. As the story almost always goes, Ken has had seller's regret ever since.
Jim always meant to find a 1967 GTO and, with his dad's help, restore it. But life got in the way, time slipped by and Ken was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer and given about three months to live.

The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land

Thu, Oct 15 2015

Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top. Watch this garbage truck consume a Pontiac Grand Am

Wed, 15 May 2013

When an old car or truck offers its dying breath in your driveway and you just don't have the financial or mechanical wherewithal to resuscitate it yet again, you traditionally have to go to the trouble of calling a flatbed or a tow truck to come haul it away. That usually helps to put a few bucks in your wallet and helps recycle some of the vehicle's parts, but the transaction doesn't seem as final or perversely satisfying as the dispatch service that this New Way Cobra Magnum garbage truck offers.
Okay, okay, so this refuse hauler isn't actually designed for this sort of thing, but it's oddly comforting to know that a sanitation truck can compact a hapless Pontiac Grand Am into oblivion. Next time, we won't feel so guilty about slipping that rusty charcoal grille onto the curb next to the cans on garbage day. Watch the carnage by scrolling below.
