GM CONCEPT CAR  FROM THE GM COLLECTION MUSEUM
                                           G8 AWD LS1
THE ONLY ALL WHEEL DRIVE GM V8 CAR EVER BUILT
                                    that the public can own

What do you get when you add a 350 horsepower 5.7 litre V8, Versatrak all-wheel-drive, and Goodyear 255/40ZR-19 inch tires to a Pontiac Grand Prix? – the Grand Prix G8, a high-performance mid-sized sedan with superb handling and traction. With the 350 horsepower LS1 Corvette engine, the Grand Prix G8 does 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. It features the Versatrak on-demand all-wheel-drive system, custom-designed 19 inch X 9.5 inch wheels, 3 inch exhaust pipes and dual exhausts, a suspension lowered by one inch, and larger rotors on all four discs.

The aggressive exterior offers ‘boisterous’ wheel flares, hood scoops, a GTO style spoiler and hood tachometer gauge.

The LS1 engine gives the Grand Prix G8 instant torque, but there’s little wheelspin as the Verstrak sends power to the rear wheels as the front wheels slip. The stiffer suspension and low profile tires make for a stiff ride, but handling is superb, and the cornering limits are extremely high. The Versatrak system provides greater stability when cornering in the wet, but the Grand Prix G8 is too low and the tires are too wide to be of any use in winter or off-road conditions. This is strictly a performance sedan that could rival any  high-performance European sedan.  very unique options heads up display, heated and leather  power seat, performance shift transmission, tilt wheel with radio controls,am/fm premium sound system, all power options windows , locks and mirrors.

2000 Pontiac Grand Prix G8 Concepthttp://new.clubgp.com/sema2000/dscn0016.jpgImageImage
While we're talking about design concepts that won't see mass production, here's one of Pontiac's more famous ones of recent years.  The is the famous G8 Grand Prix concept coupe which debuted for the 2000 show season.  All the muscular bodywork actually has something to back it up on this car; the engine is a warmed-over 350-hp 5.7L LS1 with functional Ram Air induction and the car features the GM "Versatrak" AWD system as well.  Other goodies like 19" rolling stock, huge drilled brake rotors, and tube headers emptying into a true dual exhaust system make the total package VERY appealing.  Will any of us ever be able to buy one?  Don't hold your breath unless blue if one of your favorite colors....

Watch as Hot Rod goes from El Paso to LA the hard way

Tue, 21 Feb 2012

There are few things simultaneously more romantic and idiotic than taking a road trip in a beaten-down heap of a car. Trust us. We know. David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod Magazine fame recently undertook an epic trip from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles with the express goal of doing so for under $1,500, including the purchase price of a vehicle, food, lodging, repairs and, most importantly, fuel. With this in mind, the duo settled on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina for a lofty $650. Hilarity ensues.
Realizing that no one actually wants a Catalina sulking around the shop, Freiburger and Finnegan put the car up for auction on eBay Motors the instant they had the title in hand. By the time they rolled into Hot Rod HQ, the vehicle sold for a little over $500.
The video is part of a new series called Roadkill that should document similar adventures. Keep your eyes peeled for more calamity-soaked clips in the near future. In the meantime, hit the jump to check it out yourself.

Camaro-based Trans Am SE Bandit Edition borrows Burt Reynolds

Tue, Mar 29 2016

For some reason, modifying modern Chevrolet Camaros into the lurching, reincarnated shells of the Pontiac brand is still a thing. If you're the perverse sort that likes this kind of thing, you should check out the latest product from the Trans Am Depot, which comes complete with an endorsement from the star of Smokey and the Bandit, Burt Reynolds. Yes, the new Trans Am SE Bandit Edition has been signed and endorsed by the man himself, but what's important here is not the signature on the dash, it's the bits of Camaro that have been modified. Aesthetically, that means a Bandit-and-Frog-approved set of T-tops, a front-opening hood with a very large, prominent shaker scoop, an equally large and prominent screaming chicken, and Trans Am-inspired front and rear fascias. And naturally, Burt Reynolds' signature adorns the dash. There are plenty of reminders in the cabin about this car's Hollywood inspiration, too. Bandit decals can be found on the front headrests and center console lid, there are chicken wings on the Camaro-spec plastic door inserts, and the black-and-tan color scheme matches nicely with the exterior look. And power? Well, Sheriff Buford T. Justice would have a lot more trouble keeping up with this Trans Am than he did with the original. The 7.4-liter LSX V8 has been paired with a 2.9-liter supercharger which is good for 840 horsepower. It's fast and loud, and even if you can't get behind the look (we can't), at least this Camaro-in-Trans Am's clothing can impress with its performance. The Bandit Edition is limited to just 77 units with prices starting around $115,000. You can check out the official video from Trans Am Depot, which comes with a decent helping of Burt Reynolds, up top. Related Video:

Junkyard Gem: 1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD

Sun, Aug 1 2021

During the middle to late 1980s, General Motors made a big push to grab back some of the sales swiped by makers of European luxury machinery during the previous decade. Around the top of the prestige pyramid, there was the Turin/Hamtramck-built Cadillac Allante taking aim at the Mercedes-Benz 560SEC and the super high-tech Buick Reatta trying to seduce away BMW and Jaguar shoppers; even the Riviera offered a futuristic touchscreen computer sorely lacking in anything out of Stuttgart or Bavaria. The General had a plan to take on the smaller German sporty sedans, too, and Pontiac of the "We Build Excitement" era offered a midsize sedan packed with modern hardware at a great price: the 6000 STE. Here's one of the rarest 6000 STEs of them all, an all-wheel-drive-equipped '89 found in a Denver-area yard last week. Any 6000 STE is extremely hard to find today; when I wrote about a front-wheel-drive 1987 6000 STE back in 2018, desperate owners of these cars filled my inbox with requests — sometimes demands —  for parts that continue to this day. Many of them pleaded with me to help them find an all-wheel-drive version, and now I have managed to find one at Colorado Auto & Parts in Englewood, just south of Denver (in fact, the same yard at which I shot the '87). You may recall CAP as the old-school yard whose owners built the amazing airplane-engined 1939 Plymouth pickup a few years back.  The all-wheel-drive system on the 6000 STE was introduced for the 1988 model year, and it became standard equipment on the 1989 STE. At this time, the automotive industry had taken note of the success of the idiot-proof all-wheel-drive systems offered by AMC and Audi/Volkswagen; Toyota began selling Americans all-wheel-drive Camrys, Celicas, and Corollas, while Ford offered the Tempo and Topaz with optional AWD and Subaru was just beginning to make the switch from manually-selected four-wheel-drive to genuine all-wheel-drive around that time (it took a few more years for everyone to standardize on the 4WD/AWD terminology we use today, though). The 6000 STE AWD was intended to compete with such all-wheel-drive-equipped sedans as the Audi 80 ($23,610), Audi 90 ($28,840), and BMW 325iX ($30,750); its $22,599 price tag (about $50,700 in 2021 dollars) certainly made it seem like a bargain compared to those cars. In addition to the all-wheel-drive system, 1989 6000 STE owners got a digital instrument panel and more switches and buttons than the Space Shuttle.
