Here is an unusual find.......a 1997 Pontiac Firebird convertible with less than 100 miles from new!  It is a beautiful dark metallic green with tan cloth interior & tan power top.  It has the series 2 3800 V6 & 5-speed manual transmission and all the available power options.  It has 78 miles on the odometer and still smells new!

Here's the story......a good friend of mine (who's in his 70's now) has been a car guy his entire life.  He bought a '64.5 Mustang convertible off the showroom floor back in the spring of '64 and still owns it to this day.  Back in the 80's & early 90's he was heavily into the Pontiac Fiero....which is when I met him (I was also big into the Fiero at that time).  By the late 90's & early 2000's he was moving towards the 4th Gen F-body and had about 20 various Camaros & Firebirds.....his favorite driver today is a '99 Trans-Am.  Anyway, he purchased this Firebird convertible in July 1998 to give to his wife, but subsequent to his giving it to her she mentioned how much she hated those things.  So he never gave it to her and the car sat in the corner of his warehouse ever since.

Late last year he mentioned that he'd like to sell it and after hooking up a new battery it would not start.  The fuel pump was shot.  We had a new Delphi fuel pump installed, but it still would not start, so a set of rebuilt fuel injectors and a new fuel filter were installed too.  It fired right up and runs & drives great.....just like the new car that it is.  I drove it about a mile to the storage garage and the only thong "wrong" with the car are the tires have flat spots from sitting for almost 15 years, but if you are just adding this to your collection this will not be an issue.  If you plan on driving the car then new tires should be the first thing you replace anyway.

With the exception of the battery, fuel pump & injectors this car is exactly as it was when it left the factory.  There are some small scratches & scuffs on the rear bumper from bumping into the wall when it was parked in 1998 and some small clearcoat chips along the drivers door......nothing serious, but it must be mentioned.  I took some pictures of these issues, so please take a good look at them.  If you need better pictures then ask and I will e-mail them to you.

I have described this car as honestly as possible and while it is essentially a brand new car there are no warranties expressed or implied......it is a 15+ year old car, so anything can happen.  I encourange you to ask me any & all questions prior to bidding so there are no doubts about anything.  Also, you need to have at least 5 feedback points (with no negatives) otherwise your bid will be removed.  If you have less than 5 and want to bid on this car then please e-mail me first and we'll talk about it.

High bidder will send a $1000 non-refundable deposit via Pay Pal within 24 hours of the auctions close with the balance due within 7 days of auction close.  I can store the car for up to 2 weeks after the auction ends for no additional cost, but after that it will be $200/month (either way the car must be paid in full within 7 days of the auctions closing).

The reserve is very reasonable......about half of what it cost new, so please don't ask me what it is.  Bid to own!

Thanks and good luck!

Burt Reynolds' movie re-creations fetch $379,500 in Vegas

Wed, Oct 3 2018

The recent death of Hollywood legend and automotive enthusiast Burt Reynolds helped drive up the value of four of his former cars from the 1970s and '80s, which sold last weekend at Barrett-Jackson's Las Vegas auction for a combined $379,500. Reynolds, who died Sept. 6 at age 82, had offered three Pontiac Trans Ams — two of them re-creations of the cars he drove in "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Hooper" and the third from 1984 used to promote his United States Football League team, the Tampa Bay Bandits. The fourth was a 1978 Chevrolet R30 pickup truck, styled like the one featured in "Cannonball Run." The "Bandit" re-creation, a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that Reynolds ordered to be as "movie-correct" as possible but featuring a custom-built 200-4R automatic transmission, sold for $192,500. The car features a freshly built Pontiac 400 cubic-inch V8 mated to a four-speed automatic and featuring all-new Butler Performance parts and air-conditioning components. Reynolds reportedly said this was his favorite car from his films, and it even came with an authentic movie-correct CB radio and CB antenna. The red retro-rocket "Hooper" '78 Firebird, with a 403 cubic-inch V8 and a three-speed automatic, hammered for $88,000. By comparison, a gold 1978 Trans Am also offered at the Las Vegas auction but not connected to Reynolds fetched $27,500. The 1987 Chevy R30 pickup was a re-creation of the Indy Hauler pace truck seen jumping over a moving freight train in "Cannonball Run." It hammered for $49,500. The fourth car never appeared in any of Reynolds' films but is instead the only surviving example of two Trans Ams used to promote the Tampa Bay Bandits of the now-defunct USFL, having been driven out onto the field by Reynolds and his late friend and co-star, Jerry Reed, during opening day one season. It also sold for $49,500. At the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in 2016, Reynolds accompanied a 1977 Trans Am used to promote "Bandit" onto the auction block. That car sold for $550,000. Lutz says Washington killed Pontiac, next G6 was to be ATS derivative

Tue, 29 Oct 2013

How many people think Buick or GMC should have gotten the axe instead of Pontiac? You can't see it, but I'm raising my hand. Autoweek reports that former Vice Chairman of GM, Bob Lutz, has indicated that things didn't have to end up the way they did.
"The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.'"
In a talk given at the Petersen Automotive Museum for the Inside the MotoMan Studio series, Lutz says "The Feds said, 'Yeah, how much money have you made on Pontiac in the last 10 years?' and the answer was, 'Nothing.' So, it goes. And when the guy who is handing you the check for $53 billion says, 'I don't want Pontiac, drop Pontiac or you don't get the money,' it doesn't take you very long to make up your mind." Lutz even added that the next-generation Pontiac G6 would have benefitted from the rear-wheel-drive platform of the Cadillac ATS. How awesome would that have been?

Porsche still deciding on one or two new 911 plug-in hybrids

Tue, May 29 2018

Back in March, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told Autocar that the coming Porsche 911 plug-in hybrid "will be the most powerful 911 we've ever had." That quote portended a 992-series 911 with 700 horsepower or more. A new report in Auto Express, however, suggests Porsche is having energetic debates about just what the 911's hybrid strategy will be, and that the only agreed-upon plug-in hybrid 911 so far is a milder version to sit in the middle of the range. Putting all our rumors in a row, in January, Automobile reported on an electrically-assisted 911 with 485 hp and 561 pound-feet of torque. The new AE piece effectively endorses that, saying the mid-range hybrid would follow the program established by the all-wheel drive Cayenne e-Hybrid that produces a combined 455 hp and 516 lb-ft. The 911 would naturally use a flat-six instead of the Cayenne's 3.0-liter V6, and the sports car would be tuned for better sound response and sharper reflexes. AE says fuel economy for this hybrid should be at least 80 eMPG, with emissions of less than 80 grams per kilometer. The current base Carrera is currently rated at a maximum 38.2 mpg in the UK, with minimum emissions of 169 g/km. The hybrid, fitted with a double-clutch gearbox and Porsche's mechanical all-wheel-drive system, could run from a stop to 62 miles per hour in less than four seconds, making it more efficient than a base Carrera and much faster than a Carrera 4S. AE says there remains only "the potential for Porsche to add a second, more powerful hybrid 911," and says its sources claim that's what's "causing the most consternation behind closed doors." This one would be the twin-turbocharged, 700-hp beastie that, as a series production car, would have a hard time not usurping the 540-hp Turbo, 580-hp Turbo S, and 607-hp Turbo S Exclusive. True, the hybrid would be handicapped with a 550-pound battery pack, but the instant acceleration and handling benefits of electric AWD — with no connection between the axles — could provide the final edge over the other three. As such, it makes sense that there'd be a whole lot of debate about a flagship 911 hybrid. On the other hand, such a monster seems like an eventuality in view of Porsche's electrified aspirations, the lessons gained from the 918 Hybrid and the 919 Hybrid Le Mans racer, and the fact that CEO Blume has already spoken. The Stuttgart carmaker expects a sales mix of 25 percent electric, 25 percent hybrid, and 50 percent conventional powertrains by 2025.
