1979 Pontiac Trans Am T-top Solar Gold on 2040-cars
Hilbert, Wisconsin, United States
1979 PONTIAC TRANS AM Very well cared for Solar Gold T-Top Trans Am. This car is somewhat unique in that it was reportedly delivered new to Canada and is a true A/C delete car (note the different dash and vents). I had it imported back into the US in 2004. It now has a clear Arizona title. It was restored by a restoration shop in Phoenix that included a wet sand and new decals, minor suspension tuning, and a new interior. In 2005 the engine was rebuilt by a shop in Scottsdale. It has been a very dependable car for sunny day drives and has not been in the rain or winters for over 10 years. We moved to Wisconsin in 2010 and the car has been stored with very little summer driving so I am downsizing. The car has an interesting list of options which I assume comes from the Canada order. It has power windows, T-Tops, deluxe interior, rear window defrost, and remote trunk release. The stereo is upgraded with a CD and Amp. Other than the stereo, the car is stock and original. The interior is very nice (8/10) with no major flaws. The exterior is also very nice (7/10) with some minor chips and nicks but no major issues. It is not a show car, but presents very well when we have gone to drive-in shows. The mileage is unknown as the car has had changes and I cannot verify the true mileage. As stated, I drive the car about 200 miles per year and it always starts up right away and drives great. I bought the car to drive and enjoy on nice days. It is not perfect, but it is as close as I wanted so that I can drive it and not be worried. I am happy to answer any questions within reason but I am not a mechanic and do not have any skills in that area. The car is located near Appleton, Wisconsin and my preference is that a buyer inspect the car. There is a well respected car shop in Sherwood (Zero to 60) that has done minor work on the car and can give a buyer (at their expense) a full report if needed. Shipping is at the buyer's expense and all I will commit to is meeting the driver for pick-up. I am setting the starting price and reserve low with the hope that the market will determine the sale price. I am not interested in trades as I have a full storage of cars already. |

Junkyard Gem: 1989 Pontiac Sunbird SE Coupe
Sat, Jun 11 2022General Motors built the fantastically successful J-Body cars starting at the dawn of the 1980s and continuing well into our current century, on five continents. The Pontiac Division's version of the J started out being called the J2000 and the 2000, then got the Sunbird name originally used on the Pontiac-ized Chevy Monza starting in 1983. Here's a once-slick-looking 1989 Sunbird SE Coupe, found at a Minneapolis-area boneyard way back in 2016. The best-known of all the J-Body cars, here, was the Chevrolet Cavalier, but Pontiac far outdid even the most blinged-up Cavalier Z24 when it came to elaborate taillights. Because this is Minnesota, the car is a patchwork of various layers of junkyard-obtained rusty body parts. One fender has TURBO badges from a Sunbird GT. The other side has the correct engine badges for this model. That engine is a 2.0-liter, single-overhead-cam straight-four from an engine family originally developed for the Opel Kadett D. This one was rated at 96 horsepower when new. This one has the automatic transmission, so it wouldn't have been very much fun to drive. Check out that cool parking brake handle, though! And, hey, is that a full can of Colorado Cool-Aid in the foot well? You'd think a proper Minnesota Pontiac would at least be full of Grain Belt cans. It appears that Higley Ford in Windom, Minn., had this car on the lot at some point. Windom is closer to Sioux Falls than to Minneapolis. This final mileage total looks good for a car living in Tinworm Country. Pontiac built this generation of Sunbird from the 1988 through 1994 model years, though it was really just a facelift of the first-generation cars. Starting in 1995, the Pontiac J-Body became the Sunfire, and production continued until the J platform itself got the axe in 2005. This content is hosted by a third party. How to turn a Pontiac Fiero into a trackday car
Fri, 17 Oct 2014Imagine hitting the track in a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports coupe that's affordable and has pretty good parts availability. It might sound like a pipe dream, but it's actually quite possible, if you're willing to think a little outside the box. The Pontiac Fiero is out there just waiting for a little work to turn it into a competent racing machine.
Think about it for a second. Of course, we would all like to be snaking through the curves in something exotic, but what happens when you crash or something breaks? The bills are going to mount up quickly. However, if you ball up a Fiero at the track, as long as you're not hurt, then it's not a huge tragedy.
That's basically the story of Steven Snyder in a new video from Drive starring Matt Farah. Snyder wanted to go to the track cheaply and ended up with an awesome little Fiero with a huge wing and a claimed 220 horsepower at the wheels thanks to a V6 from a Chevrolet Lumina. Check out the video to see how this pint-size Pontiac performs.
1939 Pontiac Ghost Car commands $308,000 at auction
Mon, 01 Aug 2011For the 1939 World's Fair, Pontiac built a Deluxe Six bodied in Plexiglass. Part of the Previews of Progress pavilion in which General Motors' Futurama showed off what was to come in the world of autos, the 'invisible' Pontiac is credited as the first transparent car in America. And there were no shortcuts taken with its body: the Plexiglass form was fabricated by the company that brought the material to market in 1933, Rohm & Haas.
The see-through sedan was sold at RM Auctions' St. John's auction in Michigan on July 30, fetching $308,000. Not bad appreciation for a domestic oddity that cost $25,000 to build when new. You can check out the high-res gallery of its innards, including copper and chrome metalwork and white moldings and wheels, and get the exhaustive details on it after the jump.
