Transmission: 4T65E transmission professionally overhauled with heavy duty clutches, some hard parts, etc); B&M transmission cooler; 3.29:1 final drive; Transgo shift kit; WCF shift cables.  It is a tap shift transmission, but I did not install the tap shift controls, etc. there are about 8,000 miles on the transmission since rebuild in 2008.

Other Mechanical & Electrical:

* Wiring Harness: Fiero Flyer made it.

* Computer Programming: Sinister Performance tuned it.

* Engine Cradle: Silver powder coated with aluminum cradle bushings.

* Brakes: Hybrid 13” front & rear Viper discs/Porsche Brembo calipers with Porsche pads; stainless steel brake lines and S10 master cylinder.

* Power Steering: 2000 Camaro SS power steering; Momo steering wheel; rebuilt steering column and turn signal, etc.

* Suspension: WCF coil over rear suspension; KYB shocks; WCF front springs; Eibach front sway bar; lubricated poly bushings as appropriate; heavy duty WCF rear axles; replaced front & rear wheel bearings.

* Battery Relocated to the Front: WCF carbon fiber battery box; new Optima Red Top battery.

* Cooling/Air Conditioning System: Champion 3 core radiator (runs cool on hottest Arizona days); heater core replaced; air conditioning converted to R-134C and works well.

Exterior:

* Paint: The basecoat Metallic Blue paint is original, except the front fascia and hood have been repainted; old clear coat was sanded off and silver racing stripes were painted before a new clear coat was applied; paint is better than new.

* No Rust: The car has no rust; it spent its life in Idaho, California, and Arizona, mostly in garages.

* Gauges, Controls, Buttons, Etc:  All work perfectly.

* Trunk: Replaced front hood weather seal and rear trunk gasket; original trunk carpet.

* Karr Alarm: Starter interlock; door locks; trunk release.

Other Info:

* The car starts quickly and runs great; it is very quick and it sounds great!  We were building the car to run in the 12’s but, I do not know if we made it.

* The car has had two previous adult owners before me and was only driven in the summer in Idaho before I brought it to Southern CA in 2004 with 84,000 miles on it.  The car has 98,000 Miles on the odometer today, but as almost everything that rotates or wears has been replaced since 2008 and except for the engine which had 32,000 miles on it when I bought it and has no more than about 8,000 miles of use since being partially rebuilt; hence, the car has many fewer effective miles on it.

* The car has a sun roof and original sun roof cover and case, power windows, tilt wheel, and power door locks, power mirrors.  The interior is in excellent condition.  The windshield was replaced a few years ago.

* Every bulb in the car has been replaced; headlights are Sylvania Silverstar; all lights work; headlight actuators were rebuilt and work like new.

* The car has no spare tire as the 18” wheels and tires will not fit in the Fiero spare tire space or the trunk if you had a flat…AAA and two cans of fix-a- flat is my solution as I have never had a flat in 56 years of driving.

* The car is smoke, pet, and accident free.

* Since I have owned the car the only times it has gotten wet is when it was being washed.

Third Party Inspection:

We do not have any of the usual third party inspection companies in the Prescott, AZ area, but I have had it evaluated by Jim Wing of Autotech Appraisals, (928) 541-7623.  His relevant business is a stated value (for insurance) appraisal service and he also appraises cars for buyers and sellers at auctions such as Barrett - Jackson.  The last picture on this page contains his report and he will discuss his opinions about the car with you, if you call him.  His appraised value for the car is $22,000.

If you want inspect the car, personally, or have the car inspected by a third party at my location, I will be pleased to cooperate with such inspection.

Minor Problem: The only physical problem noted by the appraiser was a cracked left rear sail panel which is shown in the last photo on this page.  Otherwise, his opinion of the car’s glass was Good.  Replacement sail panels are readily available here on eBay and elsewhere.

Title:

* The Car’s Title is Clear.

* The CarFax report shows that the car had a California DMV Junk Title issued in 2009, but there is no report of accidents, total loss, or structural damage, or water damage in that same report because the car has never been damaged in any way.

* The Junk Title was actually issued as part of the original plan to use the car as a kit car donor under the provisions of California’s Senate Bill 100 (SB100) Specially Constructed Vehicle program which provides a very complex regime for granting permission for the construction of 500 Specially Constructed Vehicles (mostly kit cars) per year.  One of the provisions of this program is that if a car is part of the kit car, even if the car is in perfect condition, the car must be treated as a dismantled vehicle and be issued a Junk Title as it will no longer be the vehicle it was and will be reconstructed as a vehicle which in no way resembles the car it was.

* California Vehicle Code Section 580 Specially Constructed Vehicle states, “A specially constructed vehicle" is a vehicle which is built for private use, not for resale, and is not constructed by a licensed manufacturer or remanufacturer.  A specially constructed vehicle may be built from (1) a kit; (2) new or used, or a combination of new and used, parts; or (3) a vehicle reported for dismantling, as required by which, when reconstructed, does not resemble the original make of the vehicle dismantled.  A specially constructed vehicle is not a vehicle which has been repaired or restored to its original design by replacing parts.”

* After, completing the first administrative part of this process which started on January 2, 2008, I decided life was too short and the cost too high to build a kit car and I would simply go for an engine swap, but the DMV would not remove the Junk Title.

* The engine swap was completed in August 2009, and the CA DMV issued a Rebuilt Title.

* In 2010, I moved the car to Arizona and the AZ Motor Vehicle Department issued another Rebuilt Title even though the car has never been damaged in any way.

California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Approved Engine Swap:

The car had a California Bureau of Auto Repair (BAR) approved engine swap completed in 2009 (BAR Vehicle Information Label is attached to the doorframe).  At that time, the car passed California smog testing as shown on the CarFax report.  I later moved to rural AZ where we have no smog testing.  The California engine swap approval may still be valid, but I do not know if it is.  If you are a California buyer you need to do your own due diligence in this matter.  I see no reason that that the car will not pass any state’s smog regulations, but I do not state or represent that it will.

Why Am I Selling the Car?

This has been a very long project and labor of love and I have about $32,000 invested in it, but I am about to turn 70 years old and I have too many cars.

David Hasselhoff's own KITT replica up for auction

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

Depending on when and where you grew up, the name David Hasselhoff likely conjures up images of Knight Rider, Baywatch, pop singer, or possibly a washed-up TV actor, but one thing that can never be taken away from The Hoff is his connection to one of the greatest automotive icons in pop culture. The Knight Industries Two Thousand, usually shortened to simply KITT, was the real star of Knight Rider for many fans. Based on a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the car combined snarky quips for comedy relief and stunts to provide much of the show's actions. Now, Julien's Auctions is selling Hasselhoff's own replica as part of a larger sale of the actor's personal memorabilia collection.
This recreation is based on a 1986 Firebird and comes with all of the tech on the inside that now seems hilariously outdated, like the yoke steering wheel and plethora of buttons. The interior also thoughtfully includes a voice box with over 4,000 sound clips from the show. With a 5.0-liter V8 and an automatic transmission, performance is likely adequate and period correct. According to the listing, this car was created by fans and given to the Hoff. Sadly, the replica doesn't convert to Super Pursuit Mode like KITT could in later seasons, and we most associate KITT with conventional front-hinged doors to go with the power t-tops and ejector seats.
Bidding currently sits $27,500 with eight bids, since starting at $15,000. Julien's predicts it will sell for between $30,000 and $50,000. If there is some nostalgia for KITT in your heart, there is still plenty of time to bid.

Online Find: 1970 Pontiac Firebird Concept, cousin of the Weinermobile

Thu, Mar 26 2015

So there's this for sale over at Hemmings: the 1970 Pontiac Firebird One concept designed by Harry Bentley Bradley and built by Dave Crook. For sale at the time of writing in Bellevue, Washington for $94,950, most of the seller's description appears to be pulled from a 2001 Barrett-Jackson listing, when the car was sold at auction for $61,600. Before we get to the car, it helps to know the man behind it: Bradley was a designer at General Motors from 1962 to 1966 who, against company policy, continued to submit designs to Hot Rod magazine under an assumed name. Mattel poached him in 1966 to design its brand new toy line called Hot Wheels, and Bradley designed all of them except one. He only stayed at Mattel for a year because he didn't think Hot Wheels would be successful, then left to start his own design company. Among other works, he penned the most recent example of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Now can you see the Firebird One's design language? Since it apparently has a letter of documentation from GM design staff, we'll assume that GM asked the then-freelancing Bradley to work some magic on its muscle car, this being the totally Hot-Wheels influenced result. There are 17,456 miles on its 255-horsepower, 350 cubic-inch V8. The interior has tan leather, custom bucket seats, a wood grain dash, and one of the most awkward spare tire placements ever. The seller assures all prospective buyers that it is, like the Death Star, "fully operational."

GM recalling 70k Chevy Malibus, Pontiac G6s over steering issue

Sun, Feb 15 2015

A problem with the power steering system in the Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 has prompted General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall for an estimated 69,633 vehicles. The issue revolves around the electric power steering assist, which could suddenly fail and increase the risk of a crash, especially at low speeds where the power steering is most helpful. The recall affects 2006-2007 Chevy Malibu sedans and Malibu Maxx wagons (specifically those manufactured between April 1, 2006, and June 30, 2006), as well as the Pontiac G6 (which was offered as a sedan, coupe or convertible) from the same model years and manufactured from April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. Owners of the affected units can expect to hear from the manufacturer with instructions to bring in their vehicles to their local dealers to have the torque sensors in the power steering system replaced. RECALL Subject : Sudden Loss of Electric Power Steering , 1 INVESTIGATION(S) Report Receipt Date: FEB 04, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V064000 Component(s): STEERING Potential Number of Units Affected: 69,633 Manufacturer: General Motors LLC SUMMARY: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving. CONSEQUENCE: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
