Highly Modified Turbo Charged 1984 Pontiac Fiero on 2040-cars
Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, United States
This is not a street legal car but could be made into one. The emmissions have been removed, there are lexan side and rear windows. This was intended to be an autocross vehicle but was never setup for a certain autocross category. There are more than $15k of modifications and parts added to the car. Here is a short list of some of the changes and parts on the car. - Over a thousand dollars in AutoMeter Phantom gauges (Fuel level, Volts, Oil pressure, speedo, tach, water temp, oil temp and a boost gauge) - Those gauges are mounted in a carbon fiber/kevar custom made dash - There is a main kill switch - This has a full roll cage - Two bucket seats with 5 point seat belts - The raditor has been lowered several inches - Racing fuel cell has been installed in the front of the car with a tilt switch installed incase of rollover - Used only AN hose and fittings for the oil, brakes, clutch and fuel lines. There is over $1,500 in fittings and hoses in this car - There is an oil cooler with fan - Remote oil filter - Mallory fuel pump - Small Odyssey battery which has been moved to the front of the car for better weight distribution. - There is a Megasquirt engine management system but currently not connected. I am running the car off the stock ECM at this point but is configured to quickly connect the Megasquirt just by connecting several connectors. - There are several custom one off body panels including the front bumper, front hood and rear hood. Both steel doors have been replaced with fiber glass replacements to save weight. The side doors also have lexan windows again to save weight. The rear hood still needs to be fully mounted to the car. When you buy this car you will also be buying the molds that were used to make the custom fiber glass body panels and doors. - There are aluminum rims but the tires need replaced - The outside of the car will need repainted but the inside paint is fine - The engine has been totally redone and doesn't have any miles on it. We used a 3.4L block with aluminum heads. The compression ratio has been changed due to the fact we are running a turbo. It still uses a distributor which has just been replaced and will need a timing light put on it to make sure the timing is spot on. The engine mounts have been replaced with totally solid mounts and same with the engine cradle. We designed the engine and transmission to be pulled out in less than an hour. That mean connectors for the wires and plenty of room to work around the engine/transmission! - The engine is turbo charged with a brand new Garett turbo that has been sized just right for this engine. There is over $2K in the turbo, silicon and aluminum fittings. No intercooler but room to put one! The stock ECM can not handle boost so the MegaSquirt ECM will need to be hooked up or a new ECM chip will need to be installed to handle the boost. You will need to install heat sheilding around the turbo and exhaust to reduce the heat in the engine compartment. Higher flow rate fuel injectors have been installed as well. - K&N air filter - Completely stainless steel exhaust headers and muffler - The transmission is a manual 5 speed and we are also selling this car with a spare 4 speed manual transmission. There is also an aluminum flywheel with a high torque starter. - The entire rear suspension has been modified. There is no longer struts but rather a upper a-arm with adjustable QA1 coilovers. We also removed the bump steer that the stock Fiero is known for. This rear suspension also always a faster and more accurate adjustments compared to the old strut setup. It could use a softer spring rate since there has been so much weight taken out of the car. There has also been a rear sway bar installed. I am sure I am missing a bunch of other changes and items that have been upgraded or installed so if you have any questions just ask. The car does start and run but still needs some more work to call it finished. The reason I am selling the car is because I no longer have a need for it and don't want to see it sitting around while someone else could enjoy it. I am selling the car and the extras as is. The buyer must pickup the car and extras after sale. Only accept CASH in person. |

Junkyard Gem: 1986 Pontiac Fiero 2M4
Sun, Oct 8 2023The mid-engined, plastic-bodied Pontiac Fiero two-seater caused great excitement when it hit the streets as a 1984 model, then became something of an embarrassment for GM when its design flaws became clear to the car-buying public. Still, when a V6 engine became available for 1985, followed by a fastback roof for 1986, the air of Pontiac Excitement around the Fiero lingered to a certain extent. We took a look at a discarded '86 Fiero GT with both the 2.8-liter V6 and the fastback body last year, and now we'll take a look at an example of the econo-commuter four-cylinder notchback version from the same year. Pontiac used the 2M4 designation (standing for two seats, mid-engine, four cylinders) on four-cylinder Fieros, while the six-cylinder cars were known as 2M6s. 2M4 decals went on four-banger Fieros for the 1984-1986 model years, while 2M6 decals seem to have been applied less consistently to the V6 cars of that period. During the early development period of the car that became the Fiero, the idea was that it would be a nimble sports car with a lightweight engine. Then the plan shifted, with the Fiero intended to be a gas-sipping commuter. When the car finally hit showrooms, it was a lot heavier than intended, it had a Chevy Citation front suspension in the back plus a Chevette front suspension, and its engine was the low-revving, weighty Iron Duke 2.5-liter straight-four. The Duke was about the least sports-car-appropriate four-cylinder engine The General could dredge up from his parts bins, but it was cheap and there was no shortage of production capacity. By the time the Fiero came out, the Iron Duke had been renamed the Tech 4. This one was rated at 92 horsepower and 132 pound-feet. The V6 Fieros get all the press today, but plenty of the Duked versions were sold (amazingly, the Chevrolet Camaro was available with Iron Duke power from 1982 through 1986). The emissions sticker tells us that this was a California-market car, rather than the "49-state" model the rest of the country got. California-specific emissions hardware added $99 to this car's price ($277 in 2023 dollars). While this car is a base model, the original buyer loaded it with options. The transmission is a three-speed automatic, priced at $465 (about $1,303 in 2023 dollars). A five-speed manual was standard equipment on the 1986 Fiero, though the old-fashioned four-speed manual was still available for a $50 credit ($140 now).
Junkyard Gem: 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT
Wed, Nov 2 2022If you like affordable, mid-engined two-seaters, the 1980s were your decade. Fiat (and, a bit later, Bertone) offered the X1/9, Toyota sold MR2s, and even General Motors got into the act by creating the Fiero. Available from the 1984 through 1988 model years, the Pontiac Fiero showed plenty of promise but ended up being mostly disappointing, in some ways echoing the career of the Chevy Corvair of a couple of decades earlier. Today's Junkyard Gem is a once-spiffy 1986 Fiero GT, found in a self-service yard near Denver, Colorado. After a long and painful development period stretching all the way back to John DeLorean's XP-833 Banshee (which ended up being a major influence behind the original Opel GT), the Fiero finally debuted in 1983 as a 1984 model. The top-of-the-model-range GT appeared the following year. The Fiero was built as a notchback coupe and as a fastback, with all the GTs being the latter type. I couldn't get the engine lid open, but this car would have left the assembly line (in Pontiac, Michigan) with a 2.8-liter V6 rated at 140 horsepower. This car has a five-speed manual transmission, making it a credible rival for Toyota's MR2. The 1986 MR2 was less powerful than the Fiero GT (112 horsepower versus 140), but also scaled in significantly lighter (2,459 pounds against the Pontiac's 2,780 pounds). The MR2 also cost less, priced at $11,298 while the Fiero GT cost $12,875 (that's about $30,540 and $34,805, respectively, in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars). Meanwhile, the $6,998 Honda Civic CRX two-seater lured away many potential Fiero buyers despite being a front-engined/front-wheel-drive car, and the $7,186 Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 also put a dent in Fiero sales. I can't find a price for the 1986 Bertone X1/9, but it cost a hard-to-believe $13,990 in 1984. GM still was using five-digit odometers in many vehicles by the middle 1980s, but this Fiero has a six-digit unit and thus we can see that it nearly achieved 150,000 miles during its driving career. The 1984-1987 Fiero suffered from a parts-bin suspension design, with the front suspension borrowed from the Chevrolet Chevette and the entire rear transaxle/suspension assembly lifted from the front end of the Chevrolet Citation. For the 1988 model year, GM finally spent the money to design an improved Fiero-specific suspension … and then promptly put a halt to production.
Saturn Vue ignition switch leads to new group of GM recalls totaling 312k
Fri, 08 Aug 2014General Motors has another spate of recalls to announce. This time they cover 312,280 vehicles worldwide, including 269,041 of in the US, in a total of six campaigns. In 2014, the automaker has recalled 29,079,765 vehicles worldwide, with 25,754,356 of those in the US.
The largest among them covers 215,243 units of the Saturn Vue from 2002-2004 model years worldwide, 202,115 in the US. It's possible for the for the key to be removed even when the ignition isn't in the OFF position. The company knows of two crashes and one injury caused by this problem. Dealers are checking the parts and replacing the ignition cylinder and key set, if necessary.
Next is 72,826 models worldwide (48,059 vehicles in the US) of the 2013 Cadillac ATS four-door sedan, 2013 Buick Encore and 2013 Chevy Trax in Canada. It's possible that the for lap belt pretensioner to retract but not to lock, which could increase occupant movement during a crash. Both front, outboard lap belt pretensioners are being replaced, and a stop-sale is in effect on unsold models until the problem is repaired. There are no known crashes or injuries, though.
