Summary
The Fiero is truly a piece of Americana, the first mass produced vehicle from any US manufacturer.  The 1988 model, the last of the Fieros, saw vast improvements over its predecessors in handling, efficiency, and reliability. This particular Fiero has been well maintained, and--though there are some minor cosmetic improvements which could be made--is immediately ready to enjoy.

The As-Is Buyer - This car is ready to go as-is.  It runs strong, looks good, and is a lot of fun to drive.  There is no work needed to begin immediately enjoying it,  The engine starts with no problem, the transmission is clean and shifts smoothly, the suspension is tight and rides smooth even at 70+ mph, and all of the electronics and lights work as expected.

The Project Guy or Gal - The '88 Fiero is a great platform for someone looking to customize their own ride, build a kit car, or perform an engine swap for a high-powered and newer engine.  There are numerous Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, and other kits available.  There are also many aftermarket kits available for common Fiero swaps (GM 3800, Cadillac Northstar, etc), but there's also a lot of new and interesting potential (such as the Ecotec engines used in the Solstice).

Features
  • Has the original Iron Duke 2M4 engine, and runs strong (I drive it to work every Friday)
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Removable sunroof; no leaks
  • The original Fiero sun visor which clips in place beneath the glass sunroof
  • CD player
  • Porsche-style flush-mounted headlamps.  Standard Fiero headlights are the pop-up variety.  With the flush-mounted option, there is no concern of lights getting stuck in an up-or-down position, or damaging headlight door motors when turning the headlights on while the car is iced over
  • Great on gas.  On the highway, she gets a solid 33 MPG, and takes 87 octane.  One ten-gallon fillup gets you 330 miles.
Condition
  • Mechanically sound - it can serve as a daily driver, or as a weekend toy.  As noted above, the car is driven minimum once a week (typically more often).
  • Exterior - Overall the exterior is in good condition.  All lights work, no missing panels, no major issues.  The entire body is plastic, so there is no rust.  The paint has lost its luster, but is attractive as-is.  There are three chips to note:  A small area around the sunroof, a scratch above the moulding on the passenger fender, and a chip on the driver side of the rear decklid.  All of these are minor, and can be repaired with DIY kits.  The windshield has two chips from rocks kicked up while driving (they have been filled).
  • Interior - The interior is exceptionally clean for a 1988 vehicle.  The seats are cloth, stain free, and in excellent condition.  The dash has no cracks, and the original carpeting (door and floor pans) are in good condition.  The headliner has some rips in it, and needs replacing.  However, the cloth does not hang or obstruct the driver's view, and replacement of the fabric is not urgent.
Shipping and Payment
  • Payment should be made using PayPal or cash.  No personal checks.
  • I am willing to deliver the car:
    • To within 60 miles of Greensboro, NC for free
    • To within 120 miles of Greensboro, NC for $50
    • To within 180 miles of Greensboro, NC for $100
  • If you live some distance outside of 180 miles from Greensboro, contact me and we may be able to work out an alternate arrangement.
  • If another shipping method is preferred, I will be happy to assist with whatever arrangements you wish to make.

Junkyard Gem: 2001 Pontiac Aztek

Tue, Jul 11 2017

Ah, the Pontiac Aztek. Everyone laughs at the Aztek ... except, apparently, for Coloradans who like to go camping, bike riding, hiking, and all that outdoorsy stuff that folks do in the Centennial State. You'll see Azteks being driven, unironically and without shame, all over the place in the Denver region, and now plenty of them are showing up in the local wrecking yards. Here's a first-year-of-production example in its final campground. These minivans or crossovers (or however the experts finally decided to categorize them) had built-in air compressors, audio controls in the rear cargo area, and other features meant to enhance tailgating, camping, and other activities deemed central to Generation X's allegedly active lifestyle. You could even get an optional camping kit with a tent that attached to the rear of the Aztek. So, it was a General Motors minivan-like vehicle, cousin of the weird-looking Dustbusters of the 1990s, with lots of useful features for those who did more than just commute to work and drop off kids at school. Unfortunately for GM, the Aztek was staggeringly ugly, and Generation Xers were too damned broke to buy new cars in 2001, anyway. I see plenty of them in Denver-area wrecking yards now, along with their slightly-less-offensive-looking Buick Rendezvous siblings, and so I decided to document one before they're all gone. Woman Cleared In Fatal Car Wreck After GM Letter

Tue, Nov 25 2014

A Texas judge cleared a woman Monday for a car accident that killed her fiance in 2004, after General Motors acknowledged that her car would have been among millions being recalled for a problem that may have contributed to the death. Candice Anderson was driving a 2004 Saturn Ion when it suddenly veered off a road about 60 miles east of Dallas and slammed into a tree. Anderson, then 21, was severely injured when the car's air bags failed to deploy. Her 25-year-old fiance, Gene Erikson, who was a passenger, was killed. She later pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the wreck. But during a hearing Monday, State District Judge Teresa Drum expunged the conviction from her record, according to officials in the Van Zandt County court andAnderson's attorney, Bob Hilliard. In a letter given to the court ahead of the hearing, an attorney for the automaker confirmed that Anderson's Saturn would have been among 2.6 million GM vehicles recalled in February to address ignition switches that can slip out of the "run" position, causing the engines to stall and disabling power steering, brakes and air bags. Anderson's crash "is one in which the recall condition may have caused or contributed to the frontal air bag non-deployment in the accident," attorney Richard C. Godfrey wrote. Hilliard provided a copy of the letter to The Associated Press, and Godfrey confirmed its contents Monday. Anderson was initially charged with criminally negligent homicide because there was no clear explanation at the time why the wreck occurred, according to court documents from the case. She pleaded guilty to a letter charge in 2006, and was sentenced to five years' probation. She also was ordered to perform 260 hours of community service, pay court costs and cover the costs of Erikson's funeral. "GM knew this defect caused this death, yet instead of telling the truth watched silently as Candice was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter," Hilliard said Monday. "It took 10 years for GM to find its voice." In a separate statement issued by the company, GM said it "cooperated fully by providing technical information that was requested to make a decision in this matter." The carmaker also said the issue in Anderson's case was for local law enforcement and courts to consider. "That's why we took a neutral position on Ms. Anderson's case," the company's statement said. "It was appropriate for the court to determine the legal status of Ms.

GM recalling 70k Chevy Malibus, Pontiac G6s over steering issue

Sun, Feb 15 2015

A problem with the power steering system in the Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 has prompted General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall for an estimated 69,633 vehicles. The issue revolves around the electric power steering assist, which could suddenly fail and increase the risk of a crash, especially at low speeds where the power steering is most helpful. The recall affects 2006-2007 Chevy Malibu sedans and Malibu Maxx wagons (specifically those manufactured between April 1, 2006, and June 30, 2006), as well as the Pontiac G6 (which was offered as a sedan, coupe or convertible) from the same model years and manufactured from April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. Owners of the affected units can expect to hear from the manufacturer with instructions to bring in their vehicles to their local dealers to have the torque sensors in the power steering system replaced. RECALL Subject : Sudden Loss of Electric Power Steering , 1 INVESTIGATION(S) Report Receipt Date: FEB 04, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V064000 Component(s): STEERING Potential Number of Units Affected: 69,633 Manufacturer: General Motors LLC SUMMARY: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006, and 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving. CONSEQUENCE: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14772. Note: This is an expansion of recall 14V-153 to cover additional vehicles built between April 1, 2006 and June 30, 2006. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
