1987 White Pontiac Fiero Gt 3.4l on 2040-cars
Pine Beach, New Jersey, United States
This car was a project of mine for a while, but times have changed and I need to find it a good home. I have replaced\rebuilt many things on this car. In the front, the headlight motors have been rebuilt and the radiator has been replaced. In the rear, just about everything in the engine compartment is either new or rebuilt. A professionally rebuilt 3.4L V6 (from a 1995 Camaro) was professionally installed. This included new or rebuilt alternator, starter, AC compressor, water pump and fuel injectors. The Transmission was also professionally rebuilt complete with new detent cable from Rodney Dickman. Other 3.4 Conversion parts, like the oil filter adapter and idler pulley were also purchased new from Rodney Dickman. (For those new to the Fiero, Rodney Dickman is a well known supplier of quality Fiero conversion parts. The battery is also new. The "Fiero" branded intake plenum and valve covers have been re-powder coated red in order to preserve the original look of the engine. There have been many other small upgrades, such as upgrading the vacuum lines to stainless steel. Inside, the seats show less than expected wear and tear. The plastic areas of the dashboard have some signs of warping, but little to no cracking. I have installed an after-market Sony media center stereo with an iPod dock, Bluetooth phone\mp3 connection, and Sirius Satellite radio. There is no cassette or CD player, as there is a tray to store your iPod\phone. The interior door panels and passenger-side dashboard trim are in great shape.
Outside, there is some paint chipping around the sunroof, but there are no leaks. For those not familiar with the Fiero, it may look like rust, but it is just paint chipped away over the fiberglass. The looks like it was in a minor accident in the passenger-side rear bumper. This occurred before I purchased it in 2008. The rear fascia has the most damage, with some very slight cracking in the passenger-side rear tail-light cover. The reflector that is missing from the rear bumper is included with the car. The AC system is intact and functioning , but it is not charged and has not been converted from R-12. The tires\wheels are in great shape. The rear calipers have been replaced. The front calipers have some issues and need to be replaced. All in all, this is a fun car to drive. The bigger 3.4L engine gives this car some real spunk compared to the stock 2.8L. Buyer must arrange for local pickup and\or transportation

Junkyard Gem: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire coupe
Thu, Feb 21 2019In a few months, we'll reach the tenth anniversary of GM's axing of the venerable Pontiac brand. G6s, Vibes, and Matizes continued to be built until 2010, but I'm noticing a marked decrease in discarded Pontiacs lately, as I perform my junkyardy rituals. Here's a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, photographed in a Colorado wrecking yard. The Sunfire was the near-identical sibling to the Chevrolet Cavalier, based on the long-running (1982-2005) J-Body platform. It was cheap and simple, looked pretty sporty (at least in coupe form), and every parts store in North America carried just about everything you'd need to keep one running. This coupe had to compete for sales not only with a vast and menacing array of imports but with GM's own Saturn SC2 (not to mention the Cavalier itself). Meanwhile, the J platform was showing its age more with each passing year. This car sports what must have been the complete line of Fatal Clothing bomber-nose-art/skate-punk/gang-tag-influenced decals, circa 2010. I actually photographed this car back in 2011, then misplaced the image files until last week. The stickers are very California-centric for a Colorado car, but then plenty of Californians — including me— move here. When you know you're a car's final owner, it's a lot easier to whip out the paint pens and redecorate the interior. Power came from the engine GM developed for the very first J-Bodies: the 2.2-liter 122 pushrod four-cylinder. 2002 was the last model year for 122-powered Sunfires and Cavaliers; the most affordable S-10/Sonoma/Hombre trucks got this engine through 2003. It even came with a remote, so bad Midwestern farmgirls could make quick getaways when caught in the act by enraged broom-wielding mothers. Camaro-based Trans Am SE Bandit Edition borrows Burt Reynolds
Tue, Mar 29 2016For some reason, modifying modern Chevrolet Camaros into the lurching, reincarnated shells of the Pontiac brand is still a thing. If you're the perverse sort that likes this kind of thing, you should check out the latest product from the Trans Am Depot, which comes complete with an endorsement from the star of Smokey and the Bandit, Burt Reynolds. Yes, the new Trans Am SE Bandit Edition has been signed and endorsed by the man himself, but what's important here is not the signature on the dash, it's the bits of Camaro that have been modified. Aesthetically, that means a Bandit-and-Frog-approved set of T-tops, a front-opening hood with a very large, prominent shaker scoop, an equally large and prominent screaming chicken, and Trans Am-inspired front and rear fascias. And naturally, Burt Reynolds' signature adorns the dash. There are plenty of reminders in the cabin about this car's Hollywood inspiration, too. Bandit decals can be found on the front headrests and center console lid, there are chicken wings on the Camaro-spec plastic door inserts, and the black-and-tan color scheme matches nicely with the exterior look. And power? Well, Sheriff Buford T. Justice would have a lot more trouble keeping up with this Trans Am than he did with the original. The 7.4-liter LSX V8 has been paired with a 2.9-liter supercharger which is good for 840 horsepower. It's fast and loud, and even if you can't get behind the look (we can't), at least this Camaro-in-Trans Am's clothing can impress with its performance. The Bandit Edition is limited to just 77 units with prices starting around $115,000. You can check out the official video from Trans Am Depot, which comes with a decent helping of Burt Reynolds, up top. Related Video:
Drive plays Smokey, Bandit with turbo Trans Am
Sun, Jun 28 2015The modern trend for powertrains can be summed up with the simple maxim: cut displacement and add forced induction. Whether you are looking at the just-introduced 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or a BMW M3, this adage holds true. However, Pontiac's attempt at the idea goes all the way back in 1980 with the Firebird Trans Am and its turbocharged 4.9-liter V8. Drive's Mike Musto takes out a 1981 example to explain what makes this largely forgotten muscle car so special, and it certainly isn't performance. While a 4.9-liter V8 might sound like a lot in the modern world, keep in mind that only few years before the second-generation Trans Am was available with up to a staggering 7.5-liters of displacement. Turbocharging of road cars in the early '80s was quite archaic by today's standards, and the Firebird only managed around 200 horsepower with this mill. Without much go, the turbo Trans Am made up for a lack of power with lots of show. As Musto points out, the famous flaming chicken adorns practically every surface you can see on the coupe, and boost lights on the hood illuminate when the turbo is spinning. Musto still finds a lot to like about the turbo Trans Am. He even calls it "Burt Reynolds as an automobile." Find out why the coupe is so special in this entertaining clip.
