1973 Pontiac Catalina Safari 3-Seat/9-Passenger Wagon

Here at MissChiTown we are very proud to be the marketing arm of so many car collectors that want to advertise on eBay.  As car collectors ourselves very often we really get into the cars that we are marketing in terms of excitement and passion.  It doesn’t happen often but sometimes some cars just check off all the boxes on the want list.

Some of those boxes can be important to collectors who are looking to purchase a car, such as:

•               Getting the car from the original owner

•               Large, original, 1973 V8 motor to propel the car into fast acceleration capable of cruising at 85-95 mph all day long (even though it is not legal)

•               Matching Numbers

•               Original car with one re-paint to original color.

•               Original window sticker, original order form and a lot more documentation that the original owner has kept all of these years.

•               Having a car that it is not only collectible but very practical to drive on today’s roads, a car that can accommodate a large family (we know some collectors who get limousines for that purpose but they can feel a little silly driving a limousine).

•               This is a big one point, getting a car from the 70s that has FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING

•               Having the original miles documented by original owner

•               Unusual accessories like the special wheel option.

•               Factory tinted glass

•               Rear window defroster from the factory

•               Posi-Traction equivalent

•               Factory AM/FM Radio

•               Ability to carry a family of nine in luxury.

•               Factory luggage carrier on the roof for luggage.

•               Deluxe gauges from that time period

•               The car is still in the factory color Burba Brown with only one re-paint.

We mention all of the above because any car that would have half of these positive items would make the car extra hot in the collector market.  We have to say that at MissChiTown that only a very few times in our history of marketing collector cars have we had any one car that could check off all the boxes.

Yes this car features many of the important features that collectors desire.  If that does not make it one of the hottest collector station wagons around we don’t know what does.  This car in our opinion has multiple opportunities – it can be displayed at a museum with all its virtues listed on a big signboard or the virtues can be made use of by a collector who wants to use the car as a collector tour car with his family.  We have yet to see a station wagon any time so well equipped with an original owner, original order sheet, original window sticker and all of the other items above.  The following is a more inclusive description that also includes the owners description.

This very clean and original except for one repaint in original Burma Brown is being offered by the original owner is not something you will find often.  This car has the third row seating and cool disappearing power tailgate.  When not hauling people around the 2 rear seats can be folded down giving a ton of storage space.

You will love the power  of the 400 cubic inch V8 with four barrel carburetor in the engine!  Backing the motor is a 400 Turbo Hydramatic transmission with no issues.  The car was fitted with Air Conditioning from the factory as well as power steering and power brakes.

The fit and finish is in beautiful condition making it a contender at any car show you want to take it to.  The body is in beautiful condition and is very striking in the Burma Brown paint complimented by the original Beige Naugahyde interior.  Look closely at the chrome and stainless we think you will appreciate how it shines.  The soft ray tinted glass windows are all in good condition.  The factory luggage rack is still mounted in place on the roof.  The factory Rally II wheels really are quite striking and give this car an edgy look.

This car may have started out as a family vehicle but now collectors look upon these cars as great collectibles just for the “Cool Factor”.

Junkyard Gem: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire coupe

Thu, Feb 21 2019

In a few months, we'll reach the tenth anniversary of GM's axing of the venerable Pontiac brand. G6s, Vibes, and Matizes continued to be built until 2010, but I'm noticing a marked decrease in discarded Pontiacs lately, as I perform my junkyardy rituals. Here's a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, photographed in a Colorado wrecking yard. The Sunfire was the near-identical sibling to the Chevrolet Cavalier, based on the long-running (1982-2005) J-Body platform. It was cheap and simple, looked pretty sporty (at least in coupe form), and every parts store in North America carried just about everything you'd need to keep one running. This coupe had to compete for sales not only with a vast and menacing array of imports but with GM's own Saturn SC2 (not to mention the Cavalier itself). Meanwhile, the J platform was showing its age more with each passing year. This car sports what must have been the complete line of Fatal Clothing bomber-nose-art/skate-punk/gang-tag-influenced decals, circa 2010. I actually photographed this car back in 2011, then misplaced the image files until last week. The stickers are very California-centric for a Colorado car, but then plenty of Californians — including meΒ— move here. When you know you're a car's final owner, it's a lot easier to whip out the paint pens and redecorate the interior. Power came from the engine GM developed for the very first J-Bodies: the 2.2-liter 122 pushrod four-cylinder. 2002 was the last model year for 122-powered Sunfires and Cavaliers; the most affordable S-10/Sonoma/Hombre trucks got this engine through 2003. It even came with a remote, so bad Midwestern farmgirls could make quick getaways when caught in the act by enraged broom-wielding mothers. Junkyard Gem: 1980 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ

Sat, Mar 4 2023

A couple of years before John DeLorean and his team at the Pontiac Division created the GTO by pasting a big engine and some gingerbread on the LeMans, they created a rakish, powerful coupe based on the staid full-size Catalina. This was the 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix, which sold like crazy and escalated the personal luxury coupe war already brewing in Detroit. Starting with the 1969 model year, the Grand Prix switched to a smaller chassis (shared the following year with the new Chevrolet Monte Carlo), and all subsequent rear-wheel-drive Grand Prix (that is, through 1987) remained siblings of the Monte. Today's Junkyard Gem is a rare 1980 Grand Prix LJ, found in a self-service yard near Reno, Nevada. Sure, a fresh round of Middle East conflict had put a kink in America's fuel hose in 1979, leading to gas lines and a general sense of malaise, but at least the new Grand Prix looked extra sharp for 1980. The LJ package came with all sorts of appearance and comfort goodies, including these "luxury seats with loose-pillow design in New Florentine Cloth." A Pontiac Phoenix LJ was available as well. These seats must have been very comfortable when new. Who needed a Cadillac when Pontiac would sell you this car at a base MSRP of just $7,000 (about $26,704 in 2023 dollars)? That price was what you paid if you were willing to get the base 3.8-liter Buick V6, though. To get a V8 engine with four-barrel carburetor, you had to pay extra. If youΒ did pay the extra for a V8, which one you got depended on which state you lived in; in California, you got this 305-cubic-inch (5.0-liter Chevrolet small-block), and in the other 49 states you got a 301-cubic-inch (4.9-liter) Pontiac. The 305 was rated at 150 horsepower with 230 pound-feet; the 301 made 140hp and 240 lb-ft. This car was originally bought in California (the state line is about ten miles away from its final parking spot), so it has the Chevy engine. The V8 added $195 (plus $250 for the California-only emissions system) to the out-the-door price of the car, or about $1,316 in 2023 dollars. Outside of California, a 4.3-liter Chevy V6 was available for just 80 additional bucks ($305 now). All 1980 Grand Prix got a three-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment, with no manual available from the factory. This car has the optional air conditioning, which cost $601 ($2,293 after inflation). This is the "Custom Sport" steering wheel, which was standard on the LJ. The tilt option cost $81 ($309 today).

Fiero-based Zimmer Quicksilver was objectively terrible, but we'd totally drive it

Wed, Jan 19 2022

Now here's something you don't see everyday. It's listed in our classified ads as a 1986 Pontiac Fiero, but as you can see, that description is a bit misleading. In fact, it's a Zimmer Quicksilver, which was indeed built atop the guts of a mid-engine Fiero coupe but was heavily modified by the Zimmer Motorcars Corporation at a facility in Pompano Beach, Florida. And the one you see here actually seems to be a pretty decent deal for a highly unusual car. We're not sure what was a more popular starting point for kit and custom cars in the 1980s and 1990s, but it would have to be either the Fiero or the vintage air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. Fiero-based machines usually mimicked the design direction of any number of highly desirable Italian stallions, most commonly, we'd guess, the Lamborghini Countach. The Quicksilver is an altogether different animal, with over a foot of extra wheelbase added in front of the A-pillar to make for a dramatic, long and low silhouette that somehow still only has barely enough room for two passengers in its leather- and wood-lined interior. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. A stock 2.8-liter V6 engine from General Motors is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission that sends 140 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Period road tests found the 0-60 run took a little over 10 seconds, which is terrible today but wasn't all that bad for the mid '80s. Best we can tell, only around 170 Quicksilvers were made between 1984 and 1988, which are, not coincidentally, the same years that Pontiac produced the Fiero. The 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver you see here is priced at $18,495 and shows well under 30,000 miles on the odometer. There aren't a lot of Zimmer Quicksilvers currently for sale for us to compare, but the ones we did find that had sold within the last few years suggest a little under $20,000 is a reasonable asking price. It could be a fun and offbeat addition to the garage, and if nothing else, you're not likely to see another one at your local car show. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party.
