IF YOU'VE STOPPED TO READ THIS......IT'S ALREADY A GIVEN THAT YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO THE UNUSUAL.  AND BELIEVE ME........THIS IS UNUSUAL.  YOU JUST DON'T SEE THESE ON THE ROAD ANYMORE.  I CAN'T EVEN TELL YOU THE LAST TIME I SAW ONE ON THE ROAD.......CAN YOU ???

PONTIAC SAVED ONE OF IT'S BEST MUSCLE CARS FOR LAST.  THE FIRST GENERATION GRAND AM STARTED OUT TO BE THE GTO FOR THE 1973 YEAR RUN.  PONTIAC WANTED SOMETHING UPSCALE......SIMILAR TO WHAT PLYMOUTH HAD DONE........ROAD RUNNER WAS THE MUSCLE.........AND THE GTX WAS THE SAME MUSCLE, BUT WITH ALL THE LUXURY AS WELL.  THUS WAS BORN THE GRAND AM.  PONTIAC TOOK THEIR PLANS WITH THE GTO AND DECIDED TO UPGRADE THE INTERIOR WITH A LUXURY GRAND PRIX INTERIOR.  THE RESULT WAS STUNNING.  AN AIRPLANE COCKPIT STYLE DASH WITH SEPERATE GAUGES EVERYWHERE, FOR EVERYTHING.  ALL THE POWER , ELECTRIC, AND LUXURY ITEMS AVAILABLE WERE ALL CRAMMED IN THIS MUSCLE CAR.  THIS CALIFORNIA CAR WAS EQUIPPED WITH PONTIACS GREAT 400 CID MOTOR AND FLOOR SHIFTED AUTO TRANS.  A/C, POWER SEATS, CENTER CONSOLE, GAUGES UP THE WAZOO, DUAL MIRRORS, GRAND PRIX DELUXE STEERING WHEEL, TILT WHEEL AND A BUNCH OF OTHER CRAP.  THIS CAR WAS EQUIPPED FROM NEW WITH PONTIAC'S RALLYE WHEELS, AND SUSPENSION HANDLING PACKAGE (SWAY BARS ETC).  THIS CAR WAS OWNED BY A LADY UP IN FRISCO.  SHE USED IT SPARINGLY FOR YEARS, MOVED OUT TO THE CALIFORNIA HIGH DESERT WHERE THE CAR EVEN GOT LESS USE.  SHE DROVE THE CAR HOME ONE DAY, AND LEFT IT SITTING UNTIL SHE PASSED.  THE CAR WAS IN STORAGE FOR APPROXIMATELY 13 YEARS.  I'M TOLD SHE WAS THE SECOND OWNER.  I RESCUED THE CAR, CLEANED OUT THE FUEL SYSTEM, PUT A NEW BATTERY IN IT, AND STARTED HER RIGHT UP, AS IF SHE WAS USED LAST WEEK.  THE CAR RUNS AND DRIVES LIKE THE 54K MILE CAR SHE IS.  NO SQUEAKS OR RATTLES.....AND SMOOTH.  THE CAR IS AN EZ COSMETIC RESTORATION.  THE CAR STILL WEARS ITS ORIGINAL BURGENDY INTERIOR, UPOLSTERY, HEADLINER, EVERYTHING.  THE INTERIOR CAN BE USED EXACTLY AS IT IS, BUT TIME HAS DONE IT'S DUTY, SO IF YOU WANT HER PERFECT, THE DRIVER'S SEAT BOTTOM WOULD NEED TO BE SEWN (MATERIAL STILL SUPPLE ENOUGH TO REUSE AND RE-STICH), DRIVERS SEAT BACK BEADING SHOWS WEAR.  CARPET IS DIRTY, PACKAGE TRAY NEEDS REPLACING, AND THE DASH HAS SOME MINOR CRACKS FROM HEAT.  THREE INTERIOR PLASTIC MOULDINGS HAVE PERISHED.  MECHANICALLY, I WOULD REBUILD THE CARB TO HAVE IT IDLE BETTER (MAY JUST BE AND ADJUSTMENT OR SOME DIRT), MAYBE PLUG WIRES, AND NORMAL SERVICE YOU WOULD DO WITH ANY USED CAR.  TIRES ARE OLD.....HAVE TREAD, BUT YOU'D WANT THE PEACE OF MIND.  THE FLOORS AND TRUNK IS SOLID, AS YOU'D EXPECT FROM A CALIFORNIA CAR.  THERE IS SOME RUST ON SOME OF THE EXTERNAL PANELS.  NONE STRUCTURAL, AND NONE SEVERE........NO NEED TO REPLACE ANY RUSTED PANELS.  THERE HAS BEEN BODY WORK PERFORMED ON THE CAR PREVIOUSLY, AND IT HASN'T BEEN THE BEST JOB, SO FIGURE ON SPENDING SOME TIME ON BODY AND PAINT IF YOU WANT TO GET TAKE THE CAR TO SHOWS.  AS WITH ALL THESE CARS THE "ENDURA" FRONT BUMPER DISINTIGRATED.  I HAVE LEADS ON THE FACIA, GRILLES, HEADLIGHT DOORS AT A REASONABLE PRICE IF INTERESTED.  CAR WAS ORIGINALLY SILVER/BURGENDY  AND WILL BE A STUNNING COMBINATION WHEN COMPLETE.  PLEASE FEEL TO COME BY AND TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE CAR, AND ASK AS MANY QUESIONS AS YOU LIKE WHILE THE EBAY AD IS ACTIVE.  I DO NOT SHOW THE CAR AFTER THE SALE, UNTIL FUNDS ARE IN MY HAND.  A TRUE BARN FIND FROM THE END OF THE MUSCLE CAR ERA.  AND STILL A STUNNING, DISTINCT SHAPE TODAY.  THIS CAR STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL CALIFORNIA BLUE LICENSE PLATES.

PLEASE NOTE:  DEPOSIT IS NON-REFUNDABLE.  YOU ARE WELCOME TO INSPECT THE CAR PRIOR TO THE CLOSE OF AUCTION.  AFTER THE AUCTION FULL PAYMENT WILL NEED TO BE RECEIVED AND PROCESSED BEFORE THE CAR WILL BE TAKEN OUT OF STORAGE FOR FINAL DELIVERY.  NO NEGOCIATIONS TAKE PLACE AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE AUCTIONS (SORRY I HAVE TO MENTION THIS.....BUT AN OCCASIONAL , RARE EBAY BUYER, LACKS THE PROPER ETHICS).

Junkyard Gem: 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT

Wed, Nov 2 2022

If you like affordable, mid-engined two-seaters, the 1980s were your decade. Fiat (and, a bit later, Bertone) offered the X1/9, Toyota sold MR2s, and even General Motors got into the act by creating the Fiero. Available from the 1984 through 1988 model years, the Pontiac Fiero showed plenty of promise but ended up being mostly disappointing, in some ways echoing the career of the Chevy Corvair of a couple of decades earlier. Today's Junkyard Gem is a once-spiffy 1986 Fiero GT, found in a self-service yard near Denver, Colorado. After a long and painful development period stretching all the way back to John DeLorean's XP-833 Banshee (which ended up being a major influence behind the original Opel GT), the Fiero finally debuted in 1983 as a 1984 model. The top-of-the-model-range GT appeared the following year. The Fiero was built as a notchback coupe and as a fastback, with all the GTs being the latter type. I couldn't get the engine lid open, but this car would have left the assembly line (in Pontiac, Michigan) with a 2.8-liter V6 rated at 140 horsepower. This car has a five-speed manual transmission, making it a credible rival for Toyota's MR2.  The 1986 MR2 was less powerful than the Fiero GT (112 horsepower versus 140), but also scaled in significantly lighter (2,459 pounds against the Pontiac's 2,780 pounds). The MR2 also cost less, priced at $11,298 while the Fiero GT cost $12,875 (that's about $30,540 and $34,805, respectively, in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars). Meanwhile, the $6,998 Honda Civic CRX two-seater lured away many potential Fiero buyers despite being a front-engined/front-wheel-drive car, and the $7,186 Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 also put a dent in Fiero sales. I can't find a price for the 1986 Bertone X1/9, but it cost a hard-to-believe $13,990 in 1984. GM still was using five-digit odometers in many vehicles by the middle 1980s, but this Fiero has a six-digit unit and thus we can see that it nearly achieved 150,000 miles during its driving career. The 1984-1987 Fiero suffered from a parts-bin suspension design, with the front suspension borrowed from the Chevrolet Chevette and the entire rear transaxle/suspension assembly lifted from the front end of the Chevrolet Citation. For the 1988 model year, GM finally spent the money to design an improved Fiero-specific suspension … and then promptly put a halt to production.

Michigan floods from breached dams consume Pontiac Fiero collection

Thu, May 21 2020

“WeÂ’ve never had an event like this,” Michigan's city manager Brad Kaye said in a Detroit News story. "What we're looking at is an event that is the equivalent of a 500-year flood." Kaye is referencing the catastrophic flood that occurred in central Michigan this week after heavy rainfall was compounded by two breached dams on the Tittabawassee River. Reports say the flooding forced evacuation of up to 10,000 residents, swallowed entire towns, and destroyed thousands of properties. No casualties have been reported, according to the Detroit Free Press, but car enthusiasts will be sad to learn a Pontiac Fiero shop and collection called Forever Fieros was decimated by the natural disaster. The Tittabawassee River is located about two hours, or roughly 140 miles, north of Detroit. It starts 20-30 miles further north and flows southeast as a tributary to the Saginaw Bay Watershed. Along the way, the Tittabawassee is held up by several dams, including the Edenville dam that failed and the Sanford dam that was breached during torrential downpours. According to NPR, the federal government took away the Edenville dam's license in 2018 and suggested it could not last through a major flood. Unfortunately, that prediction was proven accurate.  Forever Fieros is located in Sanford, Michigan, which is just below Sanford Lake, which is created by the Sanford dam. So when the Edenville dam north of Sanford broke, water from Wixom Lake flooded Sanford Lake, and a berm next to the Sanford dam was overwhelmed, according to MLive. Technically the dam did not fail, but the end result was the same: an entire town underwater. The Tittabawassee reportedly crested at 35 feet, or 10 feet above flood level and 1.1 feet higher than the previous record set in 1986. According to The Drive, the man in charge of Forever Fieros, Tim Evans, had time to attempt to save his vehicles from floodwater. He reportedly moved about 12 cars to a street that doesn't typically flood, but the water level was simply too high for that to matter. A floating pole barn also reportedly struck and damaged the  Forever Fieros building.  Worsening the situation is the fact that Evans was planning to hold an auction to sell many of the Fieros. As seen on Industrial Bid, he planned to sell 12 Fieros, Fiero GTs and a Fiero Formula, ranging from 1984 through 1988. The lots included a 1984 pace car, a Lamborghini Countach kit car, and a Fiero Cosworth Pontiac Super Duty 16-valve DOHC engine.

The U-2 spy plane needs high-performance cars to help land

Thu, Oct 15 2015

Typically, aircraft deploy their landing gear from three main points. Most military aircraft, for example, deploy two gears at the back and one forward, like a tricycle. Some civilian aircraft flip the layout, with two in front and one in back - tail-draggers. The U-2 Dragon Lady is wildly different than any of these. With a 103-foot wingspan but a body that's just 63-feet long, the layout of the U-2 makes a traditional landing setup infeasible. Instead, the U-2 utilizes a pair of wheels, one up front and one in back. With such a bizarre layout, landings are so tough that since the U-2's earliest flights at Area 51, the US Air Force has used high-performance chase cars to guide the pilot down safely. The landing process isn't over there, though. As this video from Sploid shows, balancing out the aircraft to fit the detachable "pogos" – think training wheels for spy planes – is a comical procedure requiring a number of airman using their full body weight to even out the U-2. This video also recaps some of the great vehicles that have served as chase vehicles for this legendary spy plane. They include Chevrolet El Caminos, and the Fox-body Ford Mustangs so favored by the California Highway Patrol. For the last several years, the USAF has utilized products from General Motors, using fourth-generation Chevy Camaros, before switching over to the Pontiac GTO and most recently, the awesome Pontiac G8. It's fair to say that if you're a gearhead in the Air Force, this is the job you want. Check out the video, embedded up top.
