Up for auction is one of the rarest cars you will ever see on ebay! a one of 74 Built 1972 Lemans sport GTO convertible!!!

For some reason Pontiac did not offer a GTO convertible. Chevy,Buick and olds offered their SS454,GS455 and W30 442 cars in a convert but for some strange reason Pontiac stopped production on the GTO in convertible form. Maybe it was Insurance regulations coming down on them or just maybe sales were down from previuos years to make them decide it wasnt wirth their time But if you were smart enough to walk in to your pontiac dealer and took the time with a salesman you could make your own High powered convertible. Just 74 people were to do just so and only 74 Lemans sport convertibles were built like this one. And only a handfull of 455 HO converts were built bringing six figures already. You had to order The Lemans sport pkg to get the ragtop in the first place. [Most of these cars are 350 2bbl automatics] Then for just 41 dollars and change you could order the T41 ENDURA OPTION which gave you The GTO scooped hood,Fender extractors,Endura rubber bumper and special valance. Then order the 400-250 hp 4 bbl engine [WK] which came standard in a 72 GTO and order The M20 4 spd transmission and Safe-T-track hd rear with 355 gears and then you have the car thats here today. I knew when I bought this car almost 10 years ago that it was rare with the 400 4spd combo but didnt know till a few years in how rare it really was.

I still have the original Paperwork that was sent from Pontiac when they did it for free as a service to their pontiac buyers way before PHS existed. And have a sheet documented by Fred Simmonds to prove just 74 of these converts were built.. I bought this car locally to me off a guy who was going to part it out but when I saw it still had original floors and trunkpan in it and the owner told me the complete matching number drivetrain was in the corner I set out to take it on. Originally delivered to Rankin Pontiac In Easton Pa in June of 72 with a build date the 5th week of May this has to be one of the last 72 A body converts to be built as they ready to shut the plants to change over to the new Body style...They only offered colonade coupes and said bye bye to the ragtop for good. Insurance companys had their wish.

Built in one of the best shades offered that year and ONLY 1 year offered Its code 65 A [Sundance Orange/White top] with Saddle Interior.

This car has had No expence spared Nut and Bolt Frame Off restoration using mostly NOS parts That I Bought over the years of ownership. Lots of help From Friends and myself doing most of the work still had a cost of over 35 grand into it and it shows when you view the pics.

A restoration like this would cost the average person 70 to 80 Grand to do if someone gave you the car to bring it to the level its at now.

I took the car completly apart and bagged everthing. The Frame, front wheel houses and suspension pieces were all sandblasted and powdercoated at a local shop. All the brake lines and fuel line are stainless steel. All the suspension and springs was replaced. The floors on the car was orange from the factory[I dont know why] so they were sprayed in Red oxide which looks very close to how they were when i started. The original engine was rebuilt to stock specs with the exception of Forged pistons 030 over and a lunati 744 Ram air Grind camshaft. This really woke up the 400 engine. Trans was also rebuilt as was the 355 XH rearend. The car had 90,000 original miles on it at the time i started the resto But The odometer has been reset to 00000 at completion and now there is a whopping 46 miles on the restoration. It was only taken to one show which was a pontiac event in november of last year and I came away with a Best of show trophy.

Options on the car is as follows, 400 4bbl engine,Duel exhaust,M20 4spd Trans,Safe-t-track,Pwr steering,Pwr disc brakes,Rally Gauges with Tachometer,Console,Honeycomb wheels,Tinted Glass all,Endura option and a am radio. I added the am-fm radio and the Formula wheel for comfort and sport but can change it back to original if so desired. Honeycomb wheels have NOS trim rings, caps and original Polyglas tires.

The only sheetmetal that was changed were the quarter panels and the trunk lid. The doors,Fenders Hood and front bumper are original to the car. The glass is all original GM glass. Rear bumper and taillamps are genuine nos GM pieces. As you can see in the pictures Ive provided The car is Laser straight and all the gaps are picture perfect. Better than GM ever made them. Alot of time was spent on the Sheetmetal.

Interior Seat covers were replaced with Legendary brand covers and the fit is absolutly perfect. The door panels are the originals and the dash Is an original GM dash that was redyed to its original color. The dash bezel is the original to the car and unrestored.I added the prizm

Engine is the original numbers "Born with" block with the VIN on the front. Trans is also original with VIN intact. Rear is a 72 only unit with the XH stamp on the right axle tube instead of the drivers side like all the other years. Exhaust is an old nos Walker setup I found years ago

Im sure there is alot of stuff Im leaving out and have probably forgotten over the years of ownership but i do have lots of pics on file of how it looked when i found it,Off the frame and being put back together all the way to the car you see today. As always Please call me @ 267-246-6903 If you need more info, want to see it or talk about yours but please remember That this is a serious auction on a car Ive owned a long time with a very high end build so that being said the car will not be given away. It can be bought for a very fair price considering the time and money spent. This car was built for me and not just pieced together to be sold. Unfortunatly for me it took so long to come full circle with it that ive become burned out with it as it took a good 7 years to restore it off and on and it just sat for the other 3 years.

So if your really looking for a one of a kind car thats been done to the nines and your a perfectionist like me then this might be the car for you and I truly believe with the rarity if this car and the way it was restored it will be worth alot more money in years to come.  If not then  i appreciate you taking the time to read this novel I seemed to be writing and looking at my masterpiece. Just kidding.........

Burt Reynolds' vehicles up for auction at Barrett-Jackson

Tue, Sep 25 2018

Burt Reynolds' influence on car culture cannot be overstated. Be it "Smokey and the Bandit" or "Cannonball Run," his films inspired a generation of car enthusiasts. He died a few weeks back from cardiac arrest at age 82. This weekend, four vehicles from Reynolds' personal collection — three Pontiacs and a Chevy — will go up for auction at Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas. It seems Reynolds had plans to sell the cars before he passed. He even filmed a short teaser for the auction and planned to attend the event himself. Three of the cars are Pontiac Trans Ams. Two are re-creations of the cars he drove in "Bandit" and the film "Hooper." Both are 1978 models. The third Trans Am is from 1984 and was used to promote Reynolds' USFL team, the Tampa Bay Bandits. The fourth vehicle is a 1978 Chevy R30 pickup truck. It's styled like the truck he drove in "Cannonball Run." None of the vehicles were actually used in the movies. But they were registered in his name, making them far more legitimate than some other movie-inspired clones. It's unclear how many Bandit Trans Ams Reynolds has owned over the years. Another car connected to him sold for $450,000 back in 2014. His death is sure to drive the price of these new cars even higher. GM isn't liable for punitive damages in ignition switch cases

Wed, Nov 20 2019

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court said General Motors is not liable for punitive damages over accidents that occurred after its 2009 bankruptcy and involved vehicles it produced earlier, including vehicles with faulty ignition switches. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said on Tuesday that the automaker did not agree to contractually assume liability for punitive damages as part of its federally-backed Chapter 11 reorganization. GM filed for bankruptcy in June 2009, and its best assets were transferred to a new Detroit-based company with the same name. The other assets and many liabilities stayed with "Old GM," which is also known as Motors Liquidation Co. Tuesday's 3-0 decision may help GM reduce its ultimate exposure in nationwide litigation over defective ignition switches in several Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn models. It is also a defeat for drivers involved in post-bankruptcy accidents, including those who collided with older GM vehicles driven by others, as well as their law firms. The ignition switch defect could cause engine stalls and keep airbags from deploying, and has been linked to 124 deaths. A lawyer for the drivers and their law firms did not immediately respond to requests for comment. GM had no comment. Circuit Judge Dennis Jacobs said GM's agreement to acquire assets "free and clear" of most liabilities excused it from punitive damages claims for Old GM's conduct. He also noted that the judge who oversaw the bankruptcy concluded that the new company could not be liable for claims that the "deeply insolvent" Old GM would never have paid. The decision upheld a May 2018 ruling by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan, who oversees the ignition switch litigation. Drivers have sought a variety of damages in that litigation, including for declining resale values. GM has recalled more than 2.6 million vehicles since 2014 over ignition switch problems. It has also paid more than $2.6 billion in related penalties and settlements, including $900 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice criminal case. The case is In re: Motors Liquidation Co, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 18-1940. Government/Legal Chevrolet Pontiac Saturn Safety gm ignition switch

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Pontiac Firebird

Sat, May 9 2020

From 1967 through 2002, the Pontiac Division offered the Firebird, close sibling to the Chevrolet Camaro. By the third generation, which debuted for the 1982 model year, it became more difficult to tell the two F-body cars apart at a glance and the Pontiac-exclusive engines of the earlier years disappeared, but the Firebird still retained its own personality and its own position in the GM marketing hierarchy. I still find the occasional 1982-1992 Camaro as I search car graveyards for interesting stuff, but the corresponding Firebirds have become scarce in recent years. Here's a base-engine-equipped '87, its Bright Red paint (yes, that was the official name for the color) faded by the Colorado sun as it awaits the crusher. Firebird shoppers had their choice of three engines in 1987: A 5.7-liter Chevy V8 (210 hp), a 5.0-liter Chevy V8 (205 hp) and the same 2.8-liter 60° V6 that went into the Fiero and countless front-drive GM sedans (135 hp). This car has the base engine. The third-gen F-body didn't weigh much (3,105 pounds for the '87 with six-banger, about what a 2020 Corolla weighs), so 135 horses was tolerable. Plenty of these cars got T-5 5-speed manual transmissions, but this one got the two-pedal setup. Camaro wheels, of course. Our Friend the Carburetor didn't disappear from new cars until the early 1990s in the United States, though electronic fuel injection had become very commonplace by 1987. Still, GM considered this car's EFI worth a door-handle brag. It's not worth fixing up a mashed six-cylinder third-gen Firebird, so we can see the route this car took to its final parking space.
