Background
Pontiac updated the GTO's styling for 1970, giving it a new Endura nose with exposed headlamps, bodyside creases, and a revised rear bumper. Few muscle cars made a bolder visual statement than the 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge. Graphics and wings were wilder for '70. "The Judge" decals returned, multihued stripes appeared over the bodyside creases, and the 60-inch rear wing now stood high and proud on the tail. "The Judge," observed Road Test magazine, "is not for people who are shy about being looked at."
But there was no shortage of substance here. The 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge was all about unbridled muscle car performance. The Ram Air III brought 10.5:1 compression and produced 366hp at 5,100 RPM. The M20 had wide-ratios, while the M21 was a close-ratio. All of these manual transmissions were attached to 10.4-inch-diameter clutch discs in 400-inch engines. All four-speed Judges got a Hurst T-handle shifter. The 400-cid V-8 came with functional hood scoops (an underdash knob controlled air flow).
Although cornering was never The Judge's strongest trait, it became much more fun in 1970 due to some important suspension modifications. A .875-inch anti-roll bar was fitted in the rear for the first time, and the front bar was enlarged to 1.125 inches in diameter. These bars were coupled with stronger lower rear control arms for 400-cu.in. cars, and those with four-speed manuals gained extra frame reinforcement brackets. Revised springs, and revised shock valving including the introduction of variable-ratio power steering also improved response.
Because The Judge was the top-level GTO, it was fitted with expanded vinyl Morrokide buckets with "comfort weave" inserts, standard headrests, a center console and a dashboard trimmed in woodgrain and engine-turned metal.
Only 3,797 copies of the Judge were sold in 1970. But for extroverts, limited-production car collectors, speed freaks and fans of late Sixties pop culture, the wildest GTO of all is tops. Sporty young and young-at-heart drivers will feel right at home behind the wheel of The Judge. More than 40 years ago, in an attempt to recapture some of the sales they lost to the saturated muscle car market, the Pontiac Motor Division gave the GTO a similar treatment, and The Judge was born and continues it’s iconic status in the muscle car era.

Classic car prices have been racing skyward in general, but prices for air-cooled (pre-1999) Porsche 911s are ascending like they're strapped to rocket boosters. It's been going on for years, and every year people are surprised by how outrageous it's getting: Classic Driver covered it this month, as did The Truth About Cars who included this example of a "scruffy" 1993 RS America with 215,000 miles asking $80K; Mike Spinelli at Drive riffed on it at length last year along with a host of classic-car-market observers; Porsche forums were at it two years ago; and let's not even get into the 993 Turbo, going for prices so high you have to lie down to look at them. Speed Academy has run a piece looking at why it's happening, one theory being that regular-guy owners are hopping on the runaway-price wagon without any good reason. As in the example of that high-mileage, scruffy 911 RS America at Bring a Trailer, the owner sees pristine examples valued by Hagerty at $170,000, and even though the average value is $93,238 he thinks something like, "Mine's got to be worth half of top dollar ..." The tide - even one rising on air - makes it hard to find decent prices. Then there is the flood of money into the market. In spite of articles that try to temper investors' outlooks on collectible cars, other articles in places like the Financial Times and the Guardian promote vintage metal as a safe place to put money and reap astonishing returns. Speed Academy thinks one side effect of high 911 prices is that responsible enthusiasts are turning their attention to cars like the BMW 2002, E30 M3, and E9 3.0CS, saying their prices are "sharply on the rise." The entire article is worth a read since it goes into markets far afield from pricey German steel, but incredibly, the entire piece was actually inspired by a 1997 Acura Integra R that sold for $43,000 on eBay. So while this could be the best time to get into the classic car market if you know what you're doing, it is certainly the best time to do your homework. Related Video:

Following a stop-delivery order for its new midsize trucks and a rash of recent recalls, General Motors is issuing three more campaigns covering 60,575 vehicles in North America with 57,182 of them in the US. As of October 1, the automaker has issued a total of 74 recalls (see the ridiculously long chart to the right) this year covering 26,495,070 units in the US.
The largest campaign covers 46,873 examples in the US of the 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 and 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle imported from Australia. It's possible for the driver's knee to hit the key and make it move from the "Run" to "ACC" position while driving. GM says its Holden division is developing a fixed-blade key that's supposed to fix the problem by only allowing it to rotate toward the "On" position. There has been one crash caused by this fault but no injuries or fatalities.
The second recall is for 10,005 units of the 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V because "the fuel pump module electrical terminal may overheat." This can cause a flange to melt and allow the pump to leak fuel. GM specifies that the remedy for the CTS-V is replacing the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, but it doesn't specify how the STS-V is being repaired.

For some reason, modifying modern Chevrolet Camaros into the lurching, reincarnated shells of the Pontiac brand is still a thing. If you're the perverse sort that likes this kind of thing, you should check out the latest product from the Trans Am Depot, which comes complete with an endorsement from the star of Smokey and the Bandit, Burt Reynolds. Yes, the new Trans Am SE Bandit Edition has been signed and endorsed by the man himself, but what's important here is not the signature on the dash, it's the bits of Camaro that have been modified. Aesthetically, that means a Bandit-and-Frog-approved set of T-tops, a front-opening hood with a very large, prominent shaker scoop, an equally large and prominent screaming chicken, and Trans Am-inspired front and rear fascias. And naturally, Burt Reynolds' signature adorns the dash. There are plenty of reminders in the cabin about this car's Hollywood inspiration, too. Bandit decals can be found on the front headrests and center console lid, there are chicken wings on the Camaro-spec plastic door inserts, and the black-and-tan color scheme matches nicely with the exterior look. And power? Well, Sheriff Buford T. Justice would have a lot more trouble keeping up with this Trans Am than he did with the original. The 7.4-liter LSX V8 has been paired with a 2.9-liter supercharger which is good for 840 horsepower. It's fast and loud, and even if you can't get behind the look (we can't), at least this Camaro-in-Trans Am's clothing can impress with its performance. The Bandit Edition is limited to just 77 units with prices starting around $115,000.
