1966 Pontiac Gto 4 Speed Project Car on 2040-cars
Grand Haven, Michigan, United States
Up for bid is a 1966 all metal body GTO project car. I attempted to make this traditionally ill-handling car better by making it act like an IROC. MOTOR: When I bought it, the motor was missing so I put in a 1979 Chevy small block that I totally rebuilt. This motor has EVERYTHING you could want in a street motor and more. The block I found was a 400 Chevy (1979) and the original bore was clean, so I was able to stick new pistons in those holes. Consequently, the motor ends up being an original 400 - - NOT a 406 because it has not been bored. The motor has approximately 60 hours of porting and polishing to the heads, intake, and carbs. The heads are iron. It has a rare Offenhauser X tunnel ram. On this type of intake, the right 4 barrel works the left bank and the left 4 barrel works the right bank. Hot Rod magazine did a dyno power test on this type of intake on a 350 and it produced 495 hp. I have it on the 400 I described above, so the numbers should be a little bigger. The motor has only been run for 20 minutes - - so it is literally brand new. If you need more info on the motor, I can tell you much more, so email me or call me at the number listed below. TRANSMISSION and REAR END: The transmission is a Muncie 4 speed with good synchros and a brand new Mr. Gasket inline shifter. The rear end is 12 bolt posi built by DTS - - it is brand new - - literally, no miles on it. I have $4000 invested in the rear end alone. Richmond 4.10 gears, strain spool, Strange 35 splined axles, seat clip eliminators, and bearing girdle. Also has 4 link with extra 2 link ladder bar with adjustable spring mounts. This means you can lower the rear end to the ground to make the car handle better should you choose to do so. This rear end is necessary for this motor and tranny combo. It will be a head jerker! It is definitely bulletproof!! BODY: Full metal car. I have an extra hood. The 4 barrels fit under the original GTO hood, or you can put the other hood on and the air cleaners fit into the scoops. Body work has been completed. It is straight and looks good. INTERIOR: Original back seat and two new high back Car FX seats for the front. They tilt forward and back and they have high head rests (for that head-jerking that I mentioned). The plan for this interior was lightweight - - I was going to make my own door panels. No carpet, but original carpet would fit in it. HISTORY: I bought this car about 15 years ago as a project car and have worked on it slowly over the years. SHIPPING AND PAYMENT: $500 deposit via PayPal required at auction end. Cash or official bank check required for remaining balance. Buyer is responsible for shipping/transport. Overall, I have $15,000 invested. I am starting the auction at half of that amount, so this is really a steal. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, or you can call me at 616-842-4026. Ask for Cliff. Good luck bidding!! |

Drive plays Smokey, Bandit with turbo Trans Am
Sun, Jun 28 2015The modern trend for powertrains can be summed up with the simple maxim: cut displacement and add forced induction. Whether you are looking at the just-introduced 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or a BMW M3, this adage holds true. However, Pontiac's attempt at the idea goes all the way back in 1980 with the Firebird Trans Am and its turbocharged 4.9-liter V8. Drive's Mike Musto takes out a 1981 example to explain what makes this largely forgotten muscle car so special, and it certainly isn't performance. While a 4.9-liter V8 might sound like a lot in the modern world, keep in mind that only few years before the second-generation Trans Am was available with up to a staggering 7.5-liters of displacement. Turbocharging of road cars in the early '80s was quite archaic by today's standards, and the Firebird only managed around 200 horsepower with this mill. Without much go, the turbo Trans Am made up for a lack of power with lots of show. As Musto points out, the famous flaming chicken adorns practically every surface you can see on the coupe, and boost lights on the hood illuminate when the turbo is spinning. Musto still finds a lot to like about the turbo Trans Am. He even calls it "Burt Reynolds as an automobile." Find out why the coupe is so special in this entertaining clip.
Junkyard Gem: 2008 Pontiac G5 Coupe
Sun, Apr 9 2023In the grim early days of the Great Recession, the situation at GM's Pontiac Division didn't feel so great but there was some cause for optimism. The Solstice still had a certain glow, the Holden Commodore-based G8 had just arrived, and vehicle shoppers could stride into their local Pontiac showrooms and choose from eight different models bearing the iconic arrowhead badge. Yes, there were still new Torrents and Grand Prix and Vibes for sale in 2008, and of course the Cavalier-twin Sunfire had been replaced by the Cobalt-twin G5 by that time. Here's one of those G5s, found in a Colorado Springs car graveyard. It wasn't long after this car was built that everything went to hell for Pontiac. In April of 2009, GM announced that the Pontiac Division would be "phased out" over the next few years. Just to drive home the point, GM itself filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy five weeks later. GM had already offed Oldsmobile—a marque dating back to 1897, making it nearly 30 years Pontiac's senior—five years earlier, so everybody knew there would be no reprieve in this case. Just to confuse everybody, Pontiac dealers offered a G3-badged Chevy Aveo (aka Daewoo Kalos) to sell alongside the G5 for 2009, but by 2010 there were just two new Pontiac models still standing in the United States: the G6 and the Vibe. Just over 70,000 G5s were sold in the United States during the 2007-2009 model years, making these cars fairly rare. The Cobalt/G5 ignition-switch fiasco of the mid-2010s really hammered their resale value at the time. Sometimes the definition of "Gem" refers to historical value, not the happier kind. Speaking of ignition switches, the key is still in this one. That generally means that a junkyard vehicle is a dealership trade-in or insurance total that couldn't sell at auction. This one is a base model, which listed at $15,675 (about $22,040 in 2023 dollars). The snazzier G5 GT started at $19,850 ($27,911 now) that year. The engine in this car is a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-banger rated at 148 horsepower and 152 pound-feet (the GT got a 2.4 with 171 hp/167 lb-ft). A five-speed manual was standard equipment, but the buyer of this car paid extra for the automatic. GM stuck these little "Mark of Excellence" badges on the fenders of its vehicles starting in 2005, then ditched the idea in 2009. I have vivid memories of this logo from the seatbelt buttons in my parents' 1973 Sportvan Beauville.
Lutz says GM was working on 5th-gen Pontiac GTO
Thu, 08 Aug 2013Bob Lutz was one of the forces behind bringing the Holden Monaro to the United States, as the ill-fated Pontiac GTO in 2004. And while that car received critical acclaim, it was a sales disappointment. Now, Road & Track is reporting that our suspicions were correct - Pontiac was working on a two-door, G8-based coupe before it was shuttered.
In that R&T article, which is no longer available online, Lutz explained that the new GTO would solve many of the issues found in the original. Car Advice speculates that the new model would have look like a rebadged version of the Holden Coupe 60 Concept from 2008, a conclusion we also came to.
That car would have been a big departure from the 2004 to 2006 GTO. It has an extremely long hood and short rear deck, with an almost fastback roofline and a wide greenhouse with a tall beltline. The wheel arches were very pronounced, and the chin and rocker panel splitters gave it a race-ready look. Would it have been enough to make the GTO work in the US? We think it might of, but it looks like we'll never know.
