72,000 miles LS2 V8 / 6 Speed Manual Transmission Black Exterior / Red Interior Tastefully modified with Australian Holden Monaro Conversion Adult owned and driven; meticulously maintained. Mobil 1 Oil changed consistently every 3 months or 3,000 miles (never more than 3,500 miles or 14 weeks). This car has never had anything but name brand gasoline, and has only had 93 (or 91 in places that didn’t have 93) octane in it. GM says it is capable of running on 87 or 89, but I never tried it. I have never “topped off” the tank, when the handle clicks, I stopped filling it up. I followed the maintenance plan for the car religiously, using only the highest quality of parts. All fluids and filters changed as prescribed including NRG Iridium Spark Plugs. The car has been tastefully modified from stock. Because I never trusted anyone else with it, I did almost all of the maintenance and upgrade work myself. It was the only way that I could be sure that nut and bolt were properly installed and torqued down to spec. The only exceptions were the occasional oil change done by a friend of mine in his shop, and body and paint work. All manuals, CDs, keys and original dealer paperwork (including the window sticker) come with the car. The parts were sourced and imported from JHP in Australia. The paint and body work was done by a high quality body shop. It was done because I really liked the look of the Holden front end, and I wanted to drive something a little bit more unique. The side markers that were added come with clear lenses, they stood out on the black paint, so I had them sprayed with a single layer of the same body color paint, the light still easily shines through, but when they aren't lit up they blend in perfectly. In addition while it was in the shop I had a few other custom touches done, like having the spoiler removed and the holes welded shut and painted over, also I felt the windshield washer jets were too prominent, they were large grey lumps on the clean black hood. So I had the jets removed, and the holes welded shut and painted over. New jets were sourced and relocated to the wiper arms. Lastly, a wind storm resulted in a crack in the rear bumper, due to a mix up I ended up with the US spec SAP rear bumper. I was going have the embossed "GTO" in it filled in, and change the exhaust to a twin tip design to better suit the rear end. The paint was also well cared for, detailed every 6 months (with clay bar and wax). In addition, some of the bushings from the factory are known to fail, but I also didn’t want to do something hardcore like coil-overs. So I upgraded the collapse prone rubber bushings to urethane which solved all of the alignment issues that GTO's can have. At the same time I decided that the shocks and struts should probably be changed. I imported from Australia via JHP again and got the upgraded Monroe GT Sport shocks and struts with matching Heavy Duty springs, which kept the rear at stock height while lowering the front ~ 3/4 ". This resulted in much better handling, and nicer riding car. Still very comfortable even on bumpy roads, with plenty of ground clearance, but still a nice rake. I wanted to open up the car a bit so that you could hear the amazing engine while you drove. I also wanted to improve the gas mileage as I was using the car for a lot of road trips. By installing the headers and exhaust and better controlling heat under the hood, i was able to get 26mpg on the highway, with no droning sound inside the cabin. The exhaust is just the right volume, quiet and unobtrusive under normal conditions but plenty loud when you open the throttle. When I first bought the car I was told that people were finding oil residue in the intake pipe, so I bought a billet aluminum catch can, in all the years I have owned the car, I never found more than a drop or 2 of oil in the can, but never the less, it is there. The car was also custom tuned to take advantage of the intake and exhaust modifications using HP Tuners by BD Performance, the preliminary tune was done on a dyno and then it was fine-tuned on the street. The tune also removed the 1-4 Skip Shift system that locks out 2nd & 3rd gear unless you’re driving aggressively, the torque management was removed, and the speed limiter was removed should you feel a need to find out just how fast it can go. The baseline number when it was completely stock was 355 RWHP, after the parts were installed it made 389 RWHP, after the tune it made 398 RWHP. That all translates out to an engine that makes about 450 hp. The stock system is from PBR and is sourced by GM from the Corvette. The car stops among the best of any car I have ever driven. The lights on the car are fantastic. Lots of very evenly distributed light spread over the road with a sharp cut off line to avoid blinding other drivers, and for back roads on the HID high beams turn night to day. The color of the lights is a pure white, and was chosen because it provides the most output. The HID system was added with its own plug and play harness with separate relays to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the factory wiring. The interior accent lighting was changed to the color red to really show off the red leather seats and suede panels in the car at night. however there is still white lighting in the vanity mirrors and map lights for when you need them. The car is equipped with a Reverse Parking Sensor system that is activated when the car is put in reverse. the system will beep as you approach things from behind, there is also a visual display (both numbers and bar graph) mounted in such a way that it is visible (and correctly oriented) in the rear view mirror. The dash hold the OEM Holden gauge pod that displays Oil Pressue and Voltage. The colors, font and lighting match main cluster. HID 4300K 55w Low Beam HID 4300K 55w High Beam HID 3000K 35w Fog Lights HID Light Harnesses and Relays Holden Sports Gauge Kit (Matching Faces – Oil Pressure and Voltage) Interior Lights all Converted to LEDs (Dome/Footwell/Puddle/Glovebox/Console/Ignition are all Red, Vanity Mirror and Map lights are white) Rear Parking Sensors with Inverted Display mounted above the rear windshield visible (correctly) in the rear view mirror Car Motorsports Floor Mats Black with Red Trim with red anodized Billet Aluminum carpet clips Tires: I kept summer tires on the car in the summer and winter tires on in the winter. The last set of summer tires was worn out, so the car still sits on a set of Pirelli Snow Sport winter tires. These tires have at least 2 seasons remaining them. At 60,000 miles the radiator developed a leak; it was promptly replaced with a new OEM radiator. At the same time I did a new OEM water pump and 180?F Thermostat for good measure. Current Condition: The body shows wear and tear consistent with a well maintained car with 70,000 miles. The outside bolster of the driver seat is worn and has a small tear (less than 1” long) just above the power seat controls. One of the fog light bulbs went bad recently, I replaced it with a pair of halogen bulbs I had laying around, the ballasts and wiring are in place and you can put in the HID bulbs of your choosing. I also recently changed the spark plugs (NGK Iridium) and wires again. The car is currently on winter tires, so that the purchase can put the summer tires of their choosing on, the winter set should be good for another season or 2. 3 of the wheels center caps recently disappeared, I have 2 spare Holden center caps that will be included in the sale, as well as the 4 original Pontiac center caps. This or That: 2005 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 vs. 1984 Pontiac Fiero
Tue, Feb 10 2015Welcome to another round of This or That, where two Autoblog editors pick a topic, pick a side and pull no punches. Last round pitted yours truly against Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, and my chosen VW Vanagon Syncro narrowly defeated Brandon's 1987 Land Rover. In fact, it was, by far, the closest round we've seen, with 1,907 voters seeing things my way (for 50.8 percent of the vote) versus 1,848 votes for Brandon's Rover (49.2 percent). Sweet, sweet victory! For this latest round of This or That, I've roped Editor Greg Migliore into what I think is a rather fun debate. We've each chosen our favorite terrible cars, setting a price limit of $10,000 to make sure neither of us went too crazy with our automotive atrocities. I think we've both chosen terribly... and I mean that in the best way possible. 2005 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 Jeremy Korzeniewski: Why It's Terrible: Taken in isolation, the Chrysler Crossfire isn't necessarily a terrible car. In fact, it drives pretty darn well, and there's a lot of solid engineering under its slinky shape. Problem is, that engineering was already rather long in the tooth well before Chrysler ever got its hands on it, having come from Mercedes-Benz, which used the basic chassis and drivetrain in a previous version of its SLK coupe and roadster. Granted, the SLK was an okay car, too, but even when new, it hardly set the world on fire with sporty driving dynamics. Chrysler took these decent-but-no-more bits and pieces from the Mercedes parts bin – remember, this car was conceived in the disastrous Merger Of Equals days – and covered them with a rather attractive hard-candy shell. Unfortunately, the super sporty shape wrote checks in the minds of buyers that its well-worn mechanicals were simply unable to cash, though an injection of power courtesy of a supercharged V6 engine in the SRT6 model, as seen here, certainly helped ease some of those woes. In the end, Chrysler was left with a so-called halo car that looked the part but never quite performed the part. It was almost universally panned by critics as an overpriced parts-bin special, which, I must add, was damningly accurate. As a result, sales were very slow, and within the first few months, dealers were clearancing the car at cut-rate prices, just to keep them from taking up too much of the showroom floor. Why It's Not That Terrible, After All: I can speak from personal experience when discussing the Chrysler Crossfire. You see, I owned one. Well, sort of...
NHTSA investigating 550k Pontiac G6 models, 320k Honda Odysseys
Mon, 10 Jun 2013According to two separate reports in The Detroit News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching investigations into 550,000 Pontiac G6 (pictured above) and 320,000 Honda Odyssey (pictured right) models. The G6 models are all from the 2005 to 2007 model years, while the Odyssey minivans are from the 2003 and 2004 model years. The two NHTSA probes are not related.
In the case of the G6, this is an upgrade to an original investigation that started in February after NHTSA received "hundreds of reports" that the brake lights on these cars may malfunction. According to The Detroit News, the lights may come on when the brake pedal is not depressed, and likewise, the brake lights may not illuminate when the pedal has been pushed. General Motors was able to provide NHTSA with a significant number of warranty claims, including 1,100 reports that could potentially relate to this problem, one of which indicates a vehicle crash.
For Honda, the NHTSA probe concerns airbags that may deploy unexpectedly. The government agency received six complaints from 2003-04 Odyssey owners saying that the front airbags suddenly went off without a crash. The Detroit News reports that three of the six owners sustained injuries from these incidents. Additionally, NHTSA has received 41 complaints from owners saying the vehicle's airbag warning light had illuminated.
Junkyard Gem: 2008 Pontiac G5 Coupe
Sun, Apr 9 2023In the grim early days of the Great Recession, the situation at GM's Pontiac Division didn't feel so great but there was some cause for optimism. The Solstice still had a certain glow, the Holden Commodore-based G8 had just arrived, and vehicle shoppers could stride into their local Pontiac showrooms and choose from eight different models bearing the iconic arrowhead badge. Yes, there were still new Torrents and Grand Prix and Vibes for sale in 2008, and of course the Cavalier-twin Sunfire had been replaced by the Cobalt-twin G5 by that time. Here's one of those G5s, found in a Colorado Springs car graveyard. It wasn't long after this car was built that everything went to hell for Pontiac. In April of 2009, GM announced that the Pontiac Division would be "phased out" over the next few years. Just to drive home the point, GM itself filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy five weeks later. GM had already offed Oldsmobile—a marque dating back to 1897, making it nearly 30 years Pontiac's senior—five years earlier, so everybody knew there would be no reprieve in this case. Just to confuse everybody, Pontiac dealers offered a G3-badged Chevy Aveo (aka Daewoo Kalos) to sell alongside the G5 for 2009, but by 2010 there were just two new Pontiac models still standing in the United States: the G6 and the Vibe. Just over 70,000 G5s were sold in the United States during the 2007-2009 model years, making these cars fairly rare. The Cobalt/G5 ignition-switch fiasco of the mid-2010s really hammered their resale value at the time. Sometimes the definition of "Gem" refers to historical value, not the happier kind. Speaking of ignition switches, the key is still in this one. That generally means that a junkyard vehicle is a dealership trade-in or insurance total that couldn't sell at auction. This one is a base model, which listed at $15,675 (about $22,040 in 2023 dollars). The snazzier G5 GT started at $19,850 ($27,911 now) that year. The engine in this car is a 2.2-liter Ecotec four-banger rated at 148 horsepower and 152 pound-feet (the GT got a 2.4 with 171 hp/167 lb-ft). A five-speed manual was standard equipment, but the buyer of this car paid extra for the automatic. GM stuck these little "Mark of Excellence" badges on the fenders of its vehicles starting in 2005, then ditched the idea in 2009. I have vivid memories of this logo from the seatbelt buttons in my parents' 1973 Sportvan Beauville.
