Junkyard Gem: 1986 Pontiac Sunbird Sedan

Sun, Jun 28 2020

The J-Body platform was a giant seller for GM, staying in production from the first 1981 Chevrolet Cavalier all the way through that final 2005 Pontiac Sunfire. Outside of North America, Opels and Daewoos and Isuzus and Holdens and Vauxhalls and even Toyotas flew the J flag, and better than ten million rolled out of showrooms during that quarter-century. In the United States, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Buick, and Cadillac each sold J-Bodies. Of those, the Pontiac Sunbird often had the sportiest image, more cavalier than even the Cavalier Z24. I've documented a discarded Sunbird Turbo in the past, and now here's a bread-and-butter Sunbird sedan from the same era. The Sunbird name began its life in 1976 on the Pontiac-badged version of the rear-wheel-drive Buick Skyhawk, itself based on the Chevy Vega. The first J-Body Pontiacs had J2000 badges, then 2000 badges, then 2000 Sunbird badges, until finally the pure non-2000 Sunbird appeared for the 1985 model year. I remain disappointed that the 2000 name didn't survive into our current century, because we could have had a 2000 Pontiac 2000, or just the "2000 2000" for short. The base engine in the '86 Sunbird was this SOHC 1.8-liter four of Brazilian origin, rated at 84 horsepower. Originally developed by Opel in the late 1970s, this engine family went into cars built all across the sprawling GM empire. 84 horsepower doesn't sound like much— and it wasn't much, even by 1986 standards— but at least the original buyer of this car had the smarts to get the five-speed manual transmission. This car weighed just 2,336 pounds, a good 500 pounds lighter than the current Chevy Sonic, so performance with the manual transmission was tolerable. The '86 Sunbird's interior was much nicer than those in its Cavalier siblings, though nowhere near the Cadillac Cimarron's reading on the Plush-O-Meter. An AM/FM/cassette stereo with auto reverse was serious audio hardware in a cheap car during the middle 1980s, when even a scratchy factory AM-only radio cost the equivalent of several hundred 2020 bucks. The price tag of this car started at $7,495, or about $17,500 in 2020 dollars. The cheapest possible Cavalier sedan went for $6,888 in 1986, but a zero-option base '86 Cavalier would make you think you'd been transported to the Soviet Union every time you slunk into its harsh confines. STUDY: Ford owns brand loyalty in 2009; Scorned Saturn, Pontiac buyers will look outside of GM

Fri, 16 Oct 2009

Ford buyers appear to love their cars more than customers of any other automotive brand, returning back to the American automaker when it comes time to purchase their next vehicle. According to a study by Experian Automotive, six of the top 10 vehicles for customer brand loyalty wear badges from the Blue Oval. That includes the Ford Fusion (62.4 percent), Ford Edge (57.9 percent), Ford Five Hundred/Taurus (56 percent), Ford Freestyle (51.9 percent), Ford Escape (49.4 percent) and the Ford Focus (47.57 percent).
Other vehicles making up the top 10 include the Toyota Prius (52 percent), Chevy Impala (51.7 percent), Toyota Camry (47.8 percent) and Toyota Corolla (47.56 percent). This brings up an interesting question: With the closing of automotive brands like Saturn and Pontiac, where are those buyers to turn for their next automotive purchase?
Apparently, not back to General Motors. According to Experian, Pontiac owners are most likely to look to the Ford lineup for their next car or truck and Saturn shoppers will switch to Toyota or Honda - not particularly surprising given that Saturn was meant to compete with import brands. Experian predicts that GM's overall market share will fall from 20 percent to about 17.5 percent, with most of the slack being picked up by Ford, Honda and Toyota.

General Motors Recalls Nearly 780,000 Cars To Fix Deadly Problem

Thu, Feb 13 2014

General Motors is recalling nearly 780,000 compact cars in North America because the engines can shut down unexpectedly and cause crashes. The company says six people have been killed in crashes related to the problem. The recall affects Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5s from the 2005 through 2007 model years. U.S. safety regulators say the weight of the key ring and rough roads can move the ignition switch out of the run position, cutting the engine and electricity. If that happens, air bags may not work. GM says there have been 22 crashes from the problem. All happened at high speeds. Dealers will replace the ignition switch for free. GM says owners should remove nonessential items from key rings until the problem is fixed. DESCRIPTION
There are a few times in a classic car collector environment where you find out how extremely rare a production car really is. Usually, the opportunity presents itself by the time the car is worth far more than the mortal man can possibly dream about owning. We’d like to end this pattern by presenting one of Pontiac most rare production sports cars ever produced. As Pontiac neared the end of its illustrious legacy, the Firebird continued to be the namesake of it sports car line up. The fourth generation was introduced in 1993 and ended alongside the Camaro in 2002. Unfortunately, the doors closed for Pontiac in 2010 making any car produced over their 84 years of operation the last we will ever see!

This 1997 Pontiac Firebird Formula WS6 Convertible represents one of only 43 examples ever produced for the public. Of this total, 41 were manufactured for the 1997 model year, and only 2 left showrooms in 1998. This marks one of those rare opportunities to tuck away a vehicle that is virtually irreplaceable! Break down the options further and one will find that this factory Black example with matching Black convertible top and Dark Pewter Cloth interior may be the only one of its kind!

Equipped with the ever powerful LT1 5.7L SFI V8 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and limited slip rear axle ratio! Standard equipment includes 4-wheel power disc brakes with anti-lock system, power rack & pinion steering, air conditioning, power windows & locks, power convertible top, cruise control, tilt steering column, 16” alloy wheels, theft alarm system, full dash instrumentation with dash tachometer, rear deck spoiler, and more! Options making this one of the rarest Pontiac Firebirds ever produced in history are the Ram Air Performance Packard that attached ram air induction, functional hood scoops, upgraded chrome wheels with high performance tires, and dual oval exhaust tips! Additional add-ons include remote keyless entry, upgraded performance 3.23 axle ratio, and enhanced audio with CD player and equalizer!

This Formula WS6 Convertible was ordered by Beaman Pontiac-GMC located in Nashville, TN, but was quickly secured by a buyer through Franklin Pontiac in Franklin, TN on October 25, 1996 with a serious premium no doubt! It has traded hands about 5 times in its lifetime, and will forever be one of the rarest of vehicles ever produced in Pontiac history!! Please take a close look at the current condition and the mileage showing on the odometer will baffle you! It is in remarkable condition and shows as a car with just a fraction of these miles! Again, compared to rarest of muscle cars produced through the 1960’s and 1970’s, not many cars from the twentieth century will ever have the possible investment return as this one! Need further proof of rare high output GM convertibles; look into Corvette L88 Roadster, GTO Judge convertible, Buick GS455 Stage I convertible, Chevelle LS6 convertible, and just a few others that match the unbelievable low production rarity of this 1997 Pontiac Formula WS6 Convertible! Again, Pontiac Historical Services indicated this car as just one of only 41 produced in 1997! Only 2 others were manufactured in 1998 making their short 2-year, 43-unit production run, one of the shortest in modern times! Please call with additional questions or to schedule a chance to see this exceptional car in person. An opportunity like this only comes along once in a lifetime!
