General Motors released the 1999 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 as part of a series built for model years 1998 to 2002. GM marked the end of the Firebird model with this special series and limited production to 2,000 vehicles

1999 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 came with a 16-valve V-8 engine with Ram Air induction. This engine measured at 5.7 liters and 347 cubic inches. Horsepower measured at 320 at 5,200 rpm. Engine displacement measured at 5,665 cc.

This model clocks an estimated top speed of 165 miles per hour. Racing enthusiasts note that the car can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds with the manual transmission, and in 6.0 seconds with the automatic transmission. The zero-to-60 braking distance is 120 feet. EPA fuel economy for city driving originally measured 18 to 19 miles per gallon and 26 to 28 miles per gallon for highway driving.
The all-aluminum LS1 powerplant replaced the iron block LT1. Horsepower increased from 285 to 305 standard and from 305 to 320 for Ram Air Formulas and Trans Ams. Part of the Gen III family of engines, the LS1 was a brand new design that was developed with GM's sophisticated computer-modeling software.

It is comprised of a deep-skirt aluminum block with 6-bolt, cross-bolted main caps. Cast-in-place iron cylinder liners feature a bore of 3.90 inches and employ a cast nodular iron crank with undercut and rolled fillets and a stroke of 3.62 inches. The resulting displacement is 346 ci or 5.7 liters. Attached to the crank are powdered metal 6.1-inch connecting rods. The pistons are hypereutectic-cast aluminum flat-tops.

Few cars I've ever driven have gotten more attention. It has all of the raw American muscle power of a regular WS6 Firebird, Yes, the LS1 in the Trans Am and Camaro Z28 is identical to that of the C5 Corvette. GM released a special WS6 to mark the end of the Firebird, limited to 2000 cars. Equipped with Chevy's LS1 V8 and Ram Air system, the WS6 engine's power rating was bumped up from 320 hp to 325 hp in 2001. The Trans Am WS6 is a high performance muscle car.The 5.7L LS1 is leading-edge technology to tradition of the GM small-block V8,

A Pontiac Trans Am WS6 is a regular Trans Am with a performance package added. This vehicle was released in 1978. The performance package included an upgraded suspension. On later vehicles it also included a larger diameter sway bar, upgraded steering box, and upgraded tires and rims.  The basic shape of the Trans Am is more than a little aggressive, with bulging fenders, a front fascia with large foglamps and a hidden intake.

Junkyard Gem: 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible, with extremely rad W25 Appearance Package

Sun, Dec 22 2019

Radwood has sparked a revival in the appreciation of goofy 1980s and 1980s automotive fashions, from neon-colored tape stripes to excessive TURBO badging to ads featuring horrifying Nagel-style women with radio faceplates instead of eyes. I see a lot of discarded cars that would have been ideal to bring to Radwood, and today's Junkyard Gem is even radder than, say, a purple Mercury Tracer Trio or a teal Chevy Beretta GT or even the elusive Dodge Daytona IROC R/T (yes, there were IROC Daytonas): a genuine Pontiac Sunbird SE convertible with the W25 Appearance Package and Bright White Star wheels. The W25 package got you a white Sunbird with kicky script badging, white wheels, and — if you opted for the optional 3.1-liter V6 — these candy-cane-influenced red-and-white displacement badges on the fenders. Now this is rad! The white interior got dirty fast, especially if the owner left the convertible top down, and these wheels were tough to keep clean for more than a few hours. This one appears to have spent many years sitting abandoned with the top down, judging by the completely trashed interior. The base engine for 1992 was the good old Cavalier four-banger, complete with 111 horsepower. This 3.1-liter engine made a respectable-for-1992 140 horses, for plenty of torque-steery, tire-squealy fun. As a J-Body car, the Sunbird was a sibling to the Chevrolet Cavalier in 1992 (the J-based Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Buick Skyhawk departed before the end of the 1980s). Starting in 1994, the Pontiac Sunfire replaced the Sunbird, continuing in production all the way through the demise of the J platform in 2005. This content is hosted by a third party. GM isn't liable for punitive damages in ignition switch cases

Wed, Nov 20 2019

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court said General Motors is not liable for punitive damages over accidents that occurred after its 2009 bankruptcy and involved vehicles it produced earlier, including vehicles with faulty ignition switches. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said on Tuesday that the automaker did not agree to contractually assume liability for punitive damages as part of its federally-backed Chapter 11 reorganization. GM filed for bankruptcy in June 2009, and its best assets were transferred to a new Detroit-based company with the same name. The other assets and many liabilities stayed with "Old GM," which is also known as Motors Liquidation Co. Tuesday's 3-0 decision may help GM reduce its ultimate exposure in nationwide litigation over defective ignition switches in several Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn models. It is also a defeat for drivers involved in post-bankruptcy accidents, including those who collided with older GM vehicles driven by others, as well as their law firms. The ignition switch defect could cause engine stalls and keep airbags from deploying, and has been linked to 124 deaths. A lawyer for the drivers and their law firms did not immediately respond to requests for comment. GM had no comment. Circuit Judge Dennis Jacobs said GM's agreement to acquire assets "free and clear" of most liabilities excused it from punitive damages claims for Old GM's conduct. He also noted that the judge who oversaw the bankruptcy concluded that the new company could not be liable for claims that the "deeply insolvent" Old GM would never have paid. The decision upheld a May 2018 ruling by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan, who oversees the ignition switch litigation. Drivers have sought a variety of damages in that litigation, including for declining resale values. GM has recalled more than 2.6 million vehicles since 2014 over ignition switch problems. It has also paid more than $2.6 billion in related penalties and settlements, including $900 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice criminal case. The case is In re: Motors Liquidation Co, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 18-1940. Government/Legal Chevrolet Pontiac Saturn Safety gm ignition switch

GM recalling 426,000 sedans over faulty transmission shift cable

Fri, 21 Sep 2012

General Motors is recalling some 426,240 sedans that may have a faulty transmission shift cable, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report this morning. The recall concerns a fault within four-speed automatic transmissions equipped on 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models, and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models.
The report specifies that tabs on the transmission shift cable may fracture and separate. Such a fault could cause a discrepancy between the actual position of the transmission and the apparent position of the shift lever.
GM is currently working to notify owners of the vehicles in question, and dealers will check and replace shift cables free of charge. Scroll down to read the complete NHTSA report.
