This is a basic driver that’s tagged & insured but needs complete restoration.  It was a late build, July 30, 1973 and delivered to Daytona Beach, Florida.  It is buccaneer red with automatic transmission, rally II wheels, radial tuned suspension, tilt steering wheels, air conditioner (compressor not included), AM-FM stereo (not included), power windows, black custom interior with red carpet, and rear console. (not included)  It is PHS documented and numbers matching, including VIN tag, engine block, transmission & firewall, with correct date codes on the heads, rear end, wheels, and body panels.  And, it has the original metal lower front valance.  It is a complete correct car except for the driver’s door, intake manifold, carburetor, and distributor.  The intake/carb is from January 1973.  And, the distributor was replaced with a 1977 HEI unit.  The odometer reads 34,257. (based on my review, I would assume 134,257)

The rear console is a less than 5% option offered from 1971 to 1977.  And, only 2979 firebird/trans am combined were built with black interior and another color carpet. (red, orange, blue)

I’ve owned it since 2008.  The engine was refreshed by the previous owner.  It includes a .030 over bore, performance cam, and ram air exhaust manifolds. (original exhaust manifolds included)  And, I’ve serviced the transmission (filter & vacuum modulator), rebuilt the carburetor, distributor, brakes (including replacing caliper, brake line, & wheel bearings) and new mufflers, battery, and tires. (Exhaust system includes muffler dump only, but, new chrome tips included)

The frame rails and structure are solid. But, it includes a few of the normal rust issues.  The worst issues include the passenger rear floor pan, trunk pan, and both rear quarter panels.  There are also a few small pin holes on various other panels. (minor issues)  The dash pad is also cracked.  Based on what I’ve seen while making this car a basic driver, I think the car was parked twice for an extended period.  I would assume it was wrecked once which included replacing the driver’s door and one repaint. (no other damage is apparent) The shade of red is not correct and doesn’t include TA decals.  And, I assume the engine was rebuilt previously due to the .030 over bore of the cylinders. (I disassembled the top end, including removing the heads to check the basic build)  The honing marks are still visible on the cylinder walls.  And, they include a slight lip at the top.

I’m selling the car because I purchased a 1973 TA from its original owner in January instead of completing the restoration of this car.  I’ve been researching and trying to purchase an original or restored 1973 TA for several years now.  So, I know how hard it is to find a correct car.  And, I know the value.  But, the reserve on this car is very reasonable.  If you want to discuss, I can be reached between 7:00 & 9:00 PM CST @ 918.274.8915

Lutz says GM was working on 5th-gen Pontiac GTO

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

Bob Lutz was one of the forces behind bringing the Holden Monaro to the United States, as the ill-fated Pontiac GTO in 2004. And while that car received critical acclaim, it was a sales disappointment. Now, Road & Track is reporting that our suspicions were correct - Pontiac was working on a two-door, G8-based coupe before it was shuttered.
In that R&T article, which is no longer available online, Lutz explained that the new GTO would solve many of the issues found in the original. Car Advice speculates that the new model would have look like a rebadged version of the Holden Coupe 60 Concept from 2008, a conclusion we also came to.
That car would have been a big departure from the 2004 to 2006 GTO. It has an extremely long hood and short rear deck, with an almost fastback roofline and a wide greenhouse with a tall beltline. The wheel arches were very pronounced, and the chin and rocker panel splitters gave it a race-ready look. Would it have been enough to make the GTO work in the US? We think it might of, but it looks like we'll never know.

Junkyard Gem: 2010 Pontiac Vibe

Wed, Apr 17 2024

Just over a month before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2009, General Motors announced that the 83-year-old Pontiac Division would be "phased out" by the end of 2010. Only three Pontiac vehicles were sold as 2010 models in the United States: the Solstice, Vibe and G6 (new G3s were sold here during 2010 but they were all 2009 models, while the G5 was available as a 2010 model only in Canada and Mexico). Today's bit of junkyard automotive history is one of the very last Vibes ever built, found in a yard near Denver, Colorado. This car is significant not just as one of the final vehicles to bear Pontiac badges but also as one of the last cars built by the New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated GM-Toyota joint venture in California, better known as NUMMI. The NUMMI factory began life as GM's Fremont Assembly, which built its first vehicle (a C-Series pickup) in 1963 and closed in 1982 after building its final vehicle (an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera). Rebooted as NUMMI, the first 1985 Chevrolet Nova (an Americanized AE82 Toyota Corolla Sprinter) rolled off the line in December of 1984. A quarter-century and better than eight million vehicles hence, NUMMI shut down production after its last Corolla was finished on April 1, 2010. While there was some noise about the Oakland Athletics building a new stadium on the site at the time, Tesla ended up buying most of the site soon after that. Tesla now builds more vehicles per year there than NUMMI ever did. The Vibe was co-developed with Toyota and based on the same platform as the ninth-generation Corolla. The Toyota Matrix was mechanically identical and was built in Canada, while the Japanese-market version (known as the Toyota Voltz) was built on the same NUMMI line as the Vibe and shipped across the Pacific. The Vibe/Matrix/Voltz got a redesign for the 2009 model year, but few noticed due to all the turmoil in the GM world at the time. The final Vibe was built in August 2009. This car was built in July of 2009, just before the end. It was living in West Texas just prior to coming to Colorado. El Paso is about a ten-hour drive from this car's current location. Once in the Centennial State, it got parked somewhere it shouldn't have been and ended up being auctioned to Pick Your Part. An occupant of this Vibe had time to sample some of the local agricultural products before that happened.

Distracted driver crosses center line and hits police car

Wed, Apr 6 2016

Attentive driving and quick reflexes saved the life of a police officer in Hudson, WI, when an oncoming driver drifted into the officer's lane and struck his cruiser. According to KMSP, the officer was patrolling along a busy road through Hudson on March 31 when the crash occurred. Dash cam video from the patrol car which was released to local media shows the dramatic collision unfold. As the officer came around a mild left-hand curve, a white, 90s-era Pontiac Grand Am continued straight through the curve, across the center line, and directly into the officer's path. The officer was able to avoid a head-on collision, but the Pontiac still struck the driver's side of the patrol car. "Both the officer and the other driver are ok, however, this accident could have been much, much worse," said a Hudson Police Department official on the department's Facebook page. "So please remember to pay attention to your driving at all times when behind the wheel." Minnesota's Department of Public Safety estimates that one in every four crashes in the State of Minnesota are caused by distracted drivers. DPS believes that the actual number may be higher, but police often have difficulty proving distracted driving as the cause of a crash. Government/Legal Pontiac Driving Safety Coupe Police/Emergency
