1972 Trans Am Clone Built 400 Engine With a Manual 5 Speed California Car Runs and drives great. Engine and trans have 5400 miles on them since rebuild. Rebuild was about 6 years ago so its been driven less than 1000 miles a year. All suspension, brakes and steering components were replaced at the same time Engine is a 1970 400 out of a lemans. It is .030 with Hyperutectic pistons, factory crank and rods, crank is .010 .010 and has a comp cam setup in it. Cam is very streetable and makes power off idle to 6000 rpm. Cam has a nice muscle car lope. Trans shifts great and all shifts are positive. Clutch is new as well, I think its a Centerforce. It is a 5 speed transmission. Brand new not rebuilt. The rearend is the factory 10 bolt with 3.55 gears and a posi. The tires have a lot of tread but are old. Rims are real Cragar Draglites. they are aluminum, no curb rash and shine pretty good. They are not clear coated so they polish up with aluminum polish easily. Front disc, rear drum power brakes, power steering. manual locks and windows. The factory gauges are in the car but factory speedo did not work with new trans so it has a new speedo just clamped to steering column. All other gauges like oil water volts are new autometer. The speedo is also an auto meter and mileage is correct to engine rebuild. It has a 5" monster tach with adjustable shift lite. The interior is in excellt condition. No tears in seats, headliner is new, carpet is new but has a slice in it by shifter. dash is near perfect with only a crack by gauges and steering column. Top of dash is perfect, tach is screwed to a pillar not the dash. easily removable. The paint is pretty good for a 12 year old paint job, few minor chips and blemishes but shows great still. All glass is good. Trim and bumpers good. Not a show car or perfect restore but a nice driver quality paint and body. Looks really good, nice shine. This is the 3rd paint job, original was red then green then this blue. There is some rust in lower portion of trunk pan and very lower corners of quarter panel are getting a few rust bubbles. This is the only rust on the car. Floor pans are solid. Doors and fenders are solid. Overall the car performs well, drives great and has pleanty of power. drives and stops straight, no pulling or shakes, no rattles, very tight suspension. Drives like a newer car. Engine is responsive, stays cool (about 180-190*) and has great oil psi. All fluids changed on time every time. Very well maintained. All the lights work, wipers, dome light, signals etc... This could easily be a daily driver or just a fun show car. Its very reliable and has no engine, trans or wiring issues. Starts and runs correct every time. Engine should make 400-425hp and it will cruise down the freeway at 70 in 5th gear around 2000 rpm. Clean California title in hand, registration is current. Car is available for viewing and test drives. Any questions please feel free to call Jarrod at 619-988-2274 |

Junkyard Gem: 1988 Pontiac 6000 LE Safari Wagon
Wed, May 27 2020The Detroit station wagon was fast losing sales to minivans and trucks as the decade of the 1980s progressed, but Pontiac shoppers still had plenty of choices as late as the 1988 model year. A visit to a Pontiac dealership in 1988 would have presented you with three sizes of wagon, from the little Sunbird through the midsize 6000 and up to the mighty Parisienne-based Safari. Today's Junkyard Gem is a luxed-up 6000 LE, complete with "wood" paneling, found in a car graveyard in Fargo, North Dakota. Confusingly, the "Safari" name in 1988 was used by Pontiac to designate both a specific model — the wagon version of the Parisienne/Bonneville— and as the traditional Pontiac designation for a station wagon. That meant that the wagon we're looking at now was a Safari but not the Safari in the 1988 Pontiac universe. The 6000 lived on the GM A-Body platform, as the Pontiac-badged version of the Chevrolet Celebrity. Production ran from the 1982 through 1991 model years, with the A-Body Buick Century surviving all the way through 1996. The LE trim level came between the base 6000 and the gloriously complex 6000 STE (which wasn't available in wagon form, sadly). I visited this yard in Fargo after judging at the Minneapolis 500 24 Hours of Lemons in Brainerd, Minnesota, last fall. Up to that point, I had visited 47 of the Lower 48 United States, with just North Dakota remaining, so I made a point of doing a Fargo detour in order to check that state off my list. I'm pleased that I found such a good example of the 1982-1996 GM A-Body in this yard, because the most famous of all the A-Bodies is the 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera driven to Brainerd by the inept Fargo-based kidnappers in the film "Fargo." This Minnesota-plated 6000 had some rust, but just negligible levels by Upper Midwestern standards on a 31-year-old car. The interior looked very good, with the original owner's manual still inside. The 6000 LE boasted "redesigned contoured seats and London/Empress fabric," which sounds pretty swanky. Something less swanky lives under the hood: an Iron Duke 2.5-liter pushrod four-cylinder engine, known as the Tech 4 by 1988. The Iron Duke was, at heart, one cylinder bank of the not-quite-renowned Pontiac 301-cubic-inch V8; while fairly rugged, the Duke ran rough (typical of large-displacement straight-four engines) and made just 98 horsepower in this application. Pontiac offered a couple of optional V6s in the 6000 in 1988, but no Quad 4.
GM Recalls 1.5 Million Cars For Steering Defect
Tue, Apr 1 2014General Motors Co. said Monday it is recalling 1.5 million vehicles worldwide because the electronic power-steering assist can suddenly stop working, making them harder to steer. The new recall brings to 6.3 million the number of vehicles GM has recalled since February. The initial recall - now at 2.6 million small cars for an ignition switch defect - prompted the automaker to name a new safety chief and speed up the review of cases that might lead to recalls. GM said it expects recall-related costs to total $750 million in the first quarter, including $300 million for the ignition switch recall. Included in the new recall are: - Chevrolet Malibu from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006, 2008 and 2009 model-year cars. - Chevrolet Malibu Maxx from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006 model-year cars. - Chevrolet HHR from the 2009-2010 model years (non-turbocharged only). - Some Chevrolet Cobalts from the 2010 model year. - Some Saturn Auras from the 2008-2009 model years. - Saturn Ion from the 2004-2007 model years. - Pontiac G6 from the 2005 model year, plus some cars from the 2006, 2008 and 2009 model years. - Service parts installed into certain vehicles before May 31, 2010, under a previous recall GM says no deaths related to the defect have been reported. It is still investigating whether there have been any accidents or injuries related to the problem. GM dealers will replace the power steering motor and other parts for free. Spokesman Alan Adler said owners will be notified of the recall the week of April 28 and will be told when parts are available after that. The Cobalt and the Ion, which are also involved in the ignition switch recall, share many common parts.GM recalled Cobalts from the 2005-2010 model years for the power steering defect in 2010, but it's unclear why the company didn't recall the Ion at the same time. Federal regulators also opened an investigation into power steering complaints in the Ion in 2010, but didn't order a recall. German prosecutors have recorded calls between VW bigwigs talking dieselgate
Thu, Mar 21 2019It's barely possible to believe how poorly Volkswagen continues to handle dieselgate. Depending on which day you catch the news, the German carmaker embodies the corporate venality of "Michael Clayton," the comic blundering of the Coen Brothers' "Burn After Reading," and the every-man-for-himself vengeance of "Reservoir Dogs." Today is Tarantino day, with news that German prosecutors have recordings of phone calls between former Audi and Porsche development boss Wolfgang Hatz, ex-Volkswagen Group executive Matthias Muller, and current Porsche executives Oliver Blume and Michael Steiner. Hatz made the calls to the trio in November 2015, two months after Volkswagen admitted its diesel-particulate sins to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hatz was still employed at the time, and in his company car. Who recorded the calls? His wife. Hatz and his missus apparently saw the storm coming and started stacking defenses early. Hatz's wife, who can be heard encouraging Hatz during at least one call, sent the recordings to Hatz's attorney from her mobile phone. According to a Google translation of the German newspaper Handelsblatt's report, she included the note, "Here is a very long, but quite informative conversation on the current situation with useful formulations." The report in Handelsblatt said that in Germany it is generally "not allowed" to record a conversation and pass it on to a third party. We don't know how the authorities will handle this matter, since prosecutors found the recordings in e-mail attachments on Mrs. Hatz's mobile phone. Remember, when the diesel scandal broke, VW spent months saying that only a small number of low-level personnel were behind it, and all of the higher-ups had been blindsided. Ex-CEO Martin Winterkorn claimed to be "stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group." Winterkorn successor Matthias Muller said, "according to current information, a few developers interfered in the engine management." Former VW USA honcho Michael Horn told a congressional committee that "a couple of software engineers" programmed the software for reasons no one could understand. In the recorded conversations, Hatz apparently called Muller to find out how VW planned to treat him.
