I purchased the car in March 1999 for the specific purpose of restoring the car that I had always wanted.  I knew from the beginning that this car was Non Number Matching and remains so.  It has a 1969 YD 400 engine block and a remanufactured Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission.  The result was to be a car that was as near to being as manufactured as possible to be driven and enjoyed.  I have the PHS documentation that verify all of the options that the car has. When the restoration began it was found to be virtually rust free. Any rust found was repaired. As you can see from below, the car has a lot and has had a lot done to it.  This car spent most of life in California.  I have some receipts from some of the previous owners that date to 1976 at which time the car was registered in CA. (one of the original Black Plates is on he car)  The car came to Maryland/Virginia in 1996 and has been in NC since 2006.  The description and information has been presented in a truthful and honest manner.  Photos no. 7,8 & 13 were taken on 09/10/2008 when the car was completed.  The remainder of the photos were taken May 1-5, 2014.  Note that there no change in the car except for the upgrades.  The prospective bidder is encouraged to ask questions and/or have an independent inspection (at their expense) if they are uncertain about any aspect of the car.

THIS VERY EARLY 1968 FIREBIRD HAS THREE THINGS THAT WERE UNIQUE TO VERY EARLY FIREBIRDS. THEY ARE:

1. THE HOOD TACHOMETER IS WHAT IS REFEREED TO AS A "TALL TACH." THIS IS THE TACHOMETER THAT WAS USED IN 1967 BUT HAS THE BLUE/GREEN FACE THAT MATCHES THE OTHER 1968 GAUGES, RADIO AND HEAT-A/C CONTROLS. SOMETIME AROUND JANUARY 1968 THE TACHOMETER WAS CHANGED TO A LOWER, MORE ROUNDED STYLE.

2. EARLY 1968 FIREBIRDS HAD ROUND OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORS, BOTH MANUAL AND REMOTE. THIS TOO WAS CHANGED AROUND JANUARY 1968 TO A RECTANGULAR SHAPED MIRROR.

3. DUE TO FEDERAL REGULATIONS, THE PARKING LAMPS HAD TO BE VISIBLE FROM THE SIDE. THE EARLY 1968 PARKING LAMPS HAD TWO BULBS, ONE THAT FLASHED AND ONE ON THE OUTSIDE THAT DID NOT. THIS BULB WAS OFTEN REFEREED TO AS A "CORNERING LAMP" BUT THEY DID NOT ACTUALLY PERFORM THAT FUNCTION. THIS TOO WAS DROPPED EARLY IN THE 1968 RUN AND CHANGED TO A SINGLE BULB.

Watch as Hot Rod goes from El Paso to LA the hard way

Tue, 21 Feb 2012

There are few things simultaneously more romantic and idiotic than taking a road trip in a beaten-down heap of a car. Trust us. We know. David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod Magazine fame recently undertook an epic trip from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles with the express goal of doing so for under $1,500, including the purchase price of a vehicle, food, lodging, repairs and, most importantly, fuel. With this in mind, the duo settled on a 1972 Pontiac Catalina for a lofty $650. Hilarity ensues.
Realizing that no one actually wants a Catalina sulking around the shop, Freiburger and Finnegan put the car up for auction on eBay Motors the instant they had the title in hand. By the time they rolled into Hot Rod HQ, the vehicle sold for a little over $500.
The video is part of a new series called Roadkill that should document similar adventures. Keep your eyes peeled for more calamity-soaked clips in the near future. In the meantime, hit the jump to check it out yourself.

Rent the 1967 Pontiac GTO from the XxX films now on Turo

Tue, Jan 10 2017

The process of renting a car usually ranges from mildly annoying to "I'm calling corporate to get you fired." Plainly, it sucks, but sometimes you're left with no alternative. Turo, a peer-to-peer carsharing network, has created what's essentially the AirBnB for cars. Like AirBnB, the quality and variety of the rides varies based on location. If you're in Tucson, Ariz., in the next week, go check out this 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible before the release of XxX: The Return of Xander Cage. Promotions and marketing aside, this is still the opportunity to drive one of the original muscle cars. It's not clear if this is an original GTO or a Pontiac Tempest that was converted, but does it really matter? Old cars never drive as well as you hope, so, as long as it looks and sounds awesome, who cares? The owner listed on Turo is Xander C., Vin Diesel's character from the XxX franchise. This is the car that was used in the original 2002 film, and from the photos it appears to be in better shape than many other movie cars. The exterior is mostly stock, with some slight modifications to the lighting, wheels, exhaust, and trim, with the addition of a funky looking hood scoop that the listing claims shoots flames. It's not clear if it functions as an actual intake because there aren't any notes about what rests under the hood. The listing does ask for premium fuel, so more than likely it's some variation of a high-compression V8. Inside, the dashboard looks like someone raided the AutoZone accessory aisle. There are gauges, dials, toggle switches, and readouts galore. The listing also claims the Goat is packing a rocket launcher and a weapons stash under the seat. $999 per day isn't cheap, but it's less than you'd pay for a day with one of the rent-an-exotic shops you see in Los Angeles or New York. If you're not in Tucson or the price is a little too steep, Turo has what it's dubbed the Adrenaline Collection. The name may be hyperbole, but the lineup of cars is actually really solid. A quick glance reveals a 2015 Lamborghini Huracan, 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider, and a 1969 Jaguar E-Type. The car list keeps expanding, so if this proves popular, look for more cool stuff in the future. Junkyard Gem: 1986 Pontiac Fiero 2M4

Sun, Oct 8 2023

The mid-engined, plastic-bodied Pontiac Fiero two-seater caused great excitement when it hit the streets as a 1984 model, then became something of an embarrassment for GM when its design flaws became clear to the car-buying public. Still, when a V6 engine became available for 1985, followed by a fastback roof for 1986, the air of Pontiac Excitement around the Fiero lingered to a certain extent. We took a look at a discarded '86 Fiero GT with both the 2.8-liter V6 and the fastback body last year, and now we'll take a look at an example of the econo-commuter four-cylinder notchback version from the same year. Pontiac used the 2M4 designation (standing for two seats, mid-engine, four cylinders) on four-cylinder Fieros, while the six-cylinder cars were known as 2M6s. 2M4 decals went on four-banger Fieros for the 1984-1986 model years, while 2M6 decals seem to have been applied less consistently to the V6 cars of that period. During the early development period of the car that became the Fiero, the idea was that it would be a nimble sports car with a lightweight engine. Then the plan shifted, with the Fiero intended to be a gas-sipping commuter. When the car finally hit showrooms, it was a lot heavier than intended, it had a Chevy Citation front suspension in the back plus a Chevette front suspension, and its engine was the low-revving, weighty Iron Duke 2.5-liter straight-four. The Duke was about the least sports-car-appropriate four-cylinder engine The General could dredge up from his parts bins, but it was cheap and there was no shortage of production capacity. By the time the Fiero came out, the Iron Duke had been renamed the Tech 4. This one was rated at 92 horsepower and 132 pound-feet. The V6 Fieros get all the press today, but plenty of the Duked versions were sold (amazingly, the Chevrolet Camaro was available with Iron Duke power from 1982 through 1986). The emissions sticker tells us that this was a California-market car, rather than the "49-state" model the rest of the country got. California-specific emissions hardware added $99 to this car's price ($277 in 2023 dollars). While this car is a base model, the original buyer loaded it with options. The transmission is a three-speed automatic, priced at $465 (about $1,303 in 2023 dollars). A five-speed manual was standard equipment on the 1986 Fiero, though the old-fashioned four-speed manual was still available for a $50 credit ($140 now).
