1958 Pontiac Bonneville on 2040-cars

1958 was the high point of chrome for GM, and this Bonneville was the "chromiest" Pontiac money could buy! Powered by a 370ci Tri Power engine and gorgeous from nose to tail and with AACA national awards this is one of the finest ’58 Pontiacs left on the planet! A Bonny for the public went on sale in 1957 in the form of 630 very expensive, fully loaded convertibles as a trim package. 1958 Marked both the start of the Bonneville as an independent model and GM’s 50th anniversary, where Harley Earl’s styling studio was let loose to do as they pleased, no matter the excess. The result was a complete retooling for a single year’s worth of cars across the board and the most chrome and trim ever seen on any cars, ever. Get inside the mint interior—we HAVE to start here first because it’s simply too cool in there! Obviously, every single thing you’ll touch has been recovered, replated or replaced, and done to a national show level. Look past the mint steering wheel (with mint center emblem—it really is that nice) and focus on the dashboard. There’s an underlying convex stainless panel running the width of the dash, and the gauges and accessories are mounted off of that panel to make them look like they’re floating. It’s awesome! Repeating circles house the instruments, vents and even the cigar lighter! There isn’t a single worn, damaged or improper piece in here! The Calypso Green cloth and leather interior seats are mint, the "star" pattern headliner looks like it was installed yesterday as does the Trinidad carpet in green with silver flecks! You won’t believe the quality of the chrome plating in here, either—it’s perfect! An AM radio provides (well, thanks to it programming choices) the same tunes it pulled in in 1958, and the rear speaker nestled between the outboard rear seats ensures that no one’s left out of the Lawrence Welk show!

NHTSA could add 1M cars to GM recall

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may expand a recall campaign for faulty brake lamps. The agency is currently looking into complaints that certain 2004-2011 Chevrolet Malibu models as well as some 2007-2009 Saturn Aura sedans may have brake lights that do not illuminate when the driver presses the pedal. Alternatively, the lamps may also illuminate without input from the driver. General Motors recalled 8,000 Pontiac G6 models from the 2005 model year for the same problem, and NHTSA is currently investigating whether to add 550,000 more G6 models built between 2005 and 2009 to the list for the same issue.
In addition, investigators are currently examining 97 complaints from Malibu and Aura owners with the same trouble. If NHTSA adds those models to the recall campaign, more than one million units could be covered. GM, meanwhile, says there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.

Tony Stewart to star in Smoke Is The Bandit web series

Mon, 10 Mar 2014

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart is making good use of his nickname Smoke in new videos inspired by the 1970s classic Smokey and the Bandit. The original is one of the quintessential automotive movies of its era with a fantastic combination of slapstick comedy and great car stunts in a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. If you've never seen it, check it out immediately.
In the new six-part Smoke IS the Bandit web series, Stewart takes on the role of Burt Reynolds' famous character complete with huge mustache. But instead of trying to smuggle cases of Coors beer it's Mobil 1 oil. The series promises to recreate many of the famous scenes from the movie and includes cameos from other NASCAR drivers.
To complete the look, future videos just need a quality replacement for a young Sally Field to ride shotgun. It would also be really cool if Reynolds could make a brief appearance at some point. Scroll down to check out the trailer and the first episode in the series.

Watch this garbage truck consume a Pontiac Grand Am

Wed, 15 May 2013

When an old car or truck offers its dying breath in your driveway and you just don't have the financial or mechanical wherewithal to resuscitate it yet again, you traditionally have to go to the trouble of calling a flatbed or a tow truck to come haul it away. That usually helps to put a few bucks in your wallet and helps recycle some of the vehicle's parts, but the transaction doesn't seem as final or perversely satisfying as the dispatch service that this New Way Cobra Magnum garbage truck offers.
Okay, okay, so this refuse hauler isn't actually designed for this sort of thing, but it's oddly comforting to know that a sanitation truck can compact a hapless Pontiac Grand Am into oblivion. Next time, we won't feel so guilty about slipping that rusty charcoal grille onto the curb next to the cans on garbage day. Watch the carnage by scrolling below.
