1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus 5.9l on 2040-cars
Easthampton, Massachusetts, United States
For sale is one 1971 Plymouth Satellite. This car is my baby--I had it through high school and college and I simply cannot hang on to it anymore, which breaks my heart, but that's how it goes. I've put a lot of work and money, and sweat, blood, and tears into this thing, and hopefully it can find a good new home with someone who has the time to further its restoration. This car has sat in a garage for the past 2.5 years. Just took it out, it fired right up. Freshened it up a bit and now its for sale. This car is mechanically, a dream. Everything, EVERYTHING has been gone through in the past 9 years I've owned it. It is dependable and a great driver. It's biggest problems are in its rust and general cosmetic issues. Please read and enjoy the description below. Motor: It has a rebuilt 360 which I bought and installed in 2008. Originally equipped with a 318. Unfortunately the odometer doesn't work, but I'd estimate the current 360 motor has under 15,000 on it since the rebuild. The block is a 90's pre-magnum casting, with 308 heads, the last generation of LA motors before they went Magnum. I souped it up mildly, with an Edelbrock Performer aluminum intake manifold, a Holley 670 Street Avenger carb, and a slightly lumpy Comp Cams camshaft. I can't find the grind number, but the cam was well researched for my combo. Ignition is Mopar Performance Electronic ignition with a MSD Blaster II coil. The thing runs like a top and starts up instantly, every time. Manual choke. Has a lot of power. Please check out this video of a "cold start" I made yesterday: http://youtu.be/5UZhTb7OEi0 Exhaust: It has a decent set of headers on it, that cost about $500. They are Hedman Hedders with HTC coating. It has dual exhaust with 2.25" pipes and a pair of glass-packs. Transmission: 4-spd overdrive trans, the aluminum casing type. It has a Hurst shifter with a big long stick on it. Was a factory 3-on-the-tree, but I installed the correct floor hump. New Zoom clutch in it. Rear end: 8 3/4", currently with 2.76 open gears in it ("highway" gears). Brakes: The whole brake system was replaced in the last 6 years. Discs in front, drums in the rear. Front brakes are Scarebird conversion kit brakes, which retrofits newer Dodge Ram rotors and calipers to replace old drum setups. These are manual brakes. I have a newer Mopar Performance aluminum master cylinder installed. Parking brake needs a new cable, an easy fix. Wheels and Tires: Wheels are cop-car steel wheels, 15x8 all around. The rear tires are in good shape, and are 255/60R15 BFG Radial T/A's. The fronts are one BFG T/A and one Primewell Sport, both 235/60R15's. All tires have good tread, but the front BFG has dry rot, so you may fail inspection for that one tire. Suspension: Front end was totally rebuilt about 6 years ago, with all new ball joints, steering linkage, bushings (urethane), the works. No sway bars. Rear leafs wear upgraded to new Hemi leaf springs at the same time. It also has air shocks for that old-school look. Interior: Newer carpet, in good shape. No headliner. Was originally a bench seat, now has buckets in pretty good original shape out of a 71 Charger. No major rips. Comfy and springy all around. Dash is cut for a radio, and has a cage for a new radio should you want to put one in. Fuel and temp gauge work, has an aftermarket oil gauge. Speedo doesn't work. Has an aftermarket tach. Door panels are in kinda rough shape. But all in all the interior smells nice and feels comfortable and fresh. Please check out this second video, of the car starting, driving forward, stopping, and reversing, made yesterday: http://youtu.be/cXtGsP5csLE This car is dependable! I used it as a daily driver all through high school and college. It really doesn't have any "quirks" and pretty much everything works on it. It could easily pass a safety inspection with maybe a few minor things. I used to drive it from North Carolina (college) to Massachusetts (parent's house) many times a year, and I would not hesitate to do that again, tomorrow! That's how great of a daily driver it is. ITS BIGGEST ISSUES ARE COSMETIC AND BODY ISSUES: The drivers side fender is a little crumpled and has rust in it, as does the driver's side quarter panel. That is the "ugly side" of the car, the passenger side has very few dents. There is some typical rust around the wheel wells. There is a riveted-on patch in front of the passenger-side wheel well. The trunk floor has some rust in it, which has been patched with screwed-in sheet metal. The roof skin has been patched with fiberglass and resin, as it has a vinyl top which caused the roof to rust. It could definitely use a new roof skin, however with the fiberglass repairs it doesn't leak any water or anything like that, and could be covered up easily with a new vinyl top should you want to go that route. The car is air-tight and water proof, but has some cosmetic issues and typical rust issues which should be addressed for this car to once again be a real beauty. It DEFINITELY could use a paint job. One corner of one frame rail is rusted out, however it is structurally sound. The front frame rails, under the K-member, has been reinforced with SAF-T-CAP steel segments professionally welded on, so it is structurally safe and sound. It could definitely use a driver's side fender, as it is dented and rusted heavily. Fender looks okay at a distance. But has a rust hole on the top of the fender where the turn signal used to be, and a badly dollied-out dent. Passenger fender is pretty sweet. A new driver's side quarter panel, which are available through AMD, would also go a long way. Add a roof skin, a couple patches here and there, and fresh paint, and this baby will look great. Please enjoy bidding on this great piece of Mopar iron. Buyer must arrange pickup of the car. It can 100% be driven onto a trailer. |

US Marshal's classic muscle car auction officially in the books
Thu, 25 Sep 2014The US Marshal's so-called Blood Muscle Auction was completed earlier this month, with the prestigious nine-car field (two cars were added following Autoblog's initial story, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 and a rare, mid-restoration 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda) finding new and hopefully law-abiding owners.
While we'd normally recap the stars of the show, in this particular auction, every car's sale was newsworthy. The full list of sale prices doesn't seem to be published, but according to The New York Times, the auction brought in a total of $2.5 million, or an average of about $277,000 per car.
The king of the contest seems to be a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (above, right), complete with a 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8, which brought home $575,000. The trio of Yenko Chevys, meanwhile, all easily cleared the six-figure mark, with the Yenko Camaro (above, far right) clearing $315,000, the Chevelle crossing the block for $237,500 and the supremely rare - one of just 37 - Yenko Nova (shown above, left) selling for an even $400,000.
SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own
Wed, 19 Dec 2012Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.
We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.
According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Read all the details here.
'71 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible sells for $3.5M [w/video]
Mon, 16 Jun 2014
We're plenty used to seeing classic cars selling for millions of dollars. It's just that they're usually European: Ferraris, Bugattis, Mercedes and the like. There are some rare American exceptions, usually wearing the names Duesenberg or Shelby. But what we have here is the most expensive Chrysler product ever sold at auction.
The vehicle in question is a Plymouth Barracuda - specifically a 1971 Hemi Cuda Convertible, chassis #BS27R1B315367 - that Mecum Auctions just sold after eight solid minutes of feverish bidding for a high bid of $3.5 million at its auction in Seattle, Washington. That figure positively eclipses the $2.2 million paid for a strikingly similar Hemi Cuda (chassis #BS27R1B269588) fetched nearly seven years ago in Scottsdale and another that was the first muscle car to break the million-dollar mark in 2002.
