I would like to preface the description of this 1970 Roadrunner by saying that in my experience buying cars on Ebay, the sellers of vehicles that I have purchased have been overly optimistic about the overall quality of the car they are selling.  When pressed about a blatant misrepresentation, amnesia seems to be the common theme.  I will give an honest appraisal of this vehicle.  I have only owned this car for 7 weeks and I purchased it from a man with failing health and a poor memory.  When I asked him for documentation for the work performed or receipts, he shrugged his shoulders.  One of the primary reasons for so few receipts and answers has to due with the passage of time.  All of the work done to this car was done fifteen years ago and then sat in storage in Loveland, Colorado.

What he was able to tell me was that he purchased this car minus drive train approximately sixteen years ago.  This is a factory burnt orange metallic 4 speed car with burnt orange interior.  This in itself interested me.  The drive train that he proceeded to build for this car is substantial and was done right.  It has a 383 with full length headers, matted to all new exhaust.  Exhaust tips are included but not installed.    It has a completely rebuilt hemi 4 speed 18 spline transmission hooked up to a rebuilt Dana 60 9 3/4 rear end with 4:11 gears.  This car has all new brakes, leaf springs and shocks.  Air cleaner is after market and so is the radiator.  Fan is a flex fan.  Car also has electronic ignition.   Everything appears to be done well and there are no leaks under this car.  It starts right up and idles beautifully.   Mechanically, she is brand new with only 50 miles on her.  Previous owner never registered this car, he only drove it around his subdivision a little bit before he put it in storage.  I drove it around the block and skipped the tires in all four gears.

The paint and body work is also new.  Car has new rear quarters, rear deck lid and air grabber hood, all from Year One.  Car is not an air grabber car according to fender tag.  That being said, there are no air grabber accessories with this car.  Floors are good.  Several pin holes in floor boards in front foot wells and also in the trunk.  The metal is also pitted, but for the most part the floor in this car is pretty good.  Car appears to have a base coat, clear coat paint job.  The paint job is pretty good, not great.  It needs a little attention around the rear window trim, drip molding and tail lights.  Someone with a little talent in the wet sanding department could do wonders for this paint job.  Bumpers have been rechromed, rear bumper has a small dent in it probably received in storage.  Paint also has a couple of dings in the paint from storage.  Grill and head light bezels will either need to be replaced or restored.  A couple of trim pieces are missing around the grill.  All of the door locks and trunk lock are missing.  Driver's side mirror is incorrect and passenger door is drilled for a mirror.  Fender tag does not indicate passenger mirror.

The interior of this car will need to be completely redone.  Steering wheel is cracked, factory am radio is long gone, lower burnt orange dash is in good condition..  Door handles and window cranks are missing.  Front seat belts are incomplete.  Kick panels are there, pillar molding are in trunk and in great shape.  Front door panels are missing.  Gauge cluster works but probably needs to be refurbished.  Glove box liner was trashed so I threw is away.  I know, I know, don't throw anything away.  Chucked the nasty carpet, it was home to pieces of the build sheet and a wasp nest.  Dash pad will need to be restored.  Pictures speak for themselves.  Heater box has a piece missing out of it.  Windshield wipers are not hooked up.  Factory 3 speed wiper motor has a sticker on it from Napa that leads me to believe that it was rebuilt but never hooked up under the dash.

Electrical system has a short in it somewhere.  When car is off, turn signals have a faint glow.  Rear marker lights have been clipped and not capped .  Turn signal lever is loose.  Horn relay is missing.  Some of the electrical work under the hood looks a little half ass.

This car has it's original 15"rallye wheels that have been restored.  Original beauty rings also.  Center caps are for a '72 and there are only 3 of them.  Rubber looks dangerous, will need to be replace.

Fender tag is as follows:  R22 V21 V8W END
                                      FK5 A87 C55 J25 J45 M21
                                      FK5 P6K4 FK5 B06 155492
                                      E63 D21 RM21 N0G 154947

This car was purchased by the previous owner in 1997 for 2500 dollars.  He then sank another 25,000 dollars into it 15 years ago.  That being said, what would that cost now?  My reserve is exactly half of that.  I would keep this car if I had the money or the garage space.  Please, if I missed something it is because it is one in the morning and I need to go to bed.  If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 970-596-6286.  Thanks, Beckett.

US Marshal's classic muscle car auction officially in the books

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

The US Marshal's so-called Blood Muscle Auction was completed earlier this month, with the prestigious nine-car field (two cars were added following Autoblog's initial story, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 and a rare, mid-restoration 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda) finding new and hopefully law-abiding owners.
While we'd normally recap the stars of the show, in this particular auction, every car's sale was newsworthy. The full list of sale prices doesn't seem to be published, but according to The New York Times, the auction brought in a total of $2.5 million, or an average of about $277,000 per car.
The king of the contest seems to be a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (above, right), complete with a 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8, which brought home $575,000. The trio of Yenko Chevys, meanwhile, all easily cleared the six-figure mark, with the Yenko Camaro (above, far right) clearing $315,000, the Chevelle crossing the block for $237,500 and the supremely rare - one of just 37 - Yenko Nova (shown above, left) selling for an even $400,000.

Barrett-Jackson 2014: 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird passes half a million dollars

Sat, 18 Jan 2014

The Plymouth Superbird is one of those classic American cars from the muscle car era that has captured the imagination of all sorts of automotive enthusiasts long after its presence on roads and race tracks wore away. It's easy to see why. Where else but in the Swingin' Sixties and Seventies would a car leave the factory with an aerodynamics package that included a pointy beak and a rear spoiler that sat several feet above the rear deck?
The example you see above, which was born in 1970, is one of the finest Superbirds we've ever seen. Combine its complete restoration with its original 426 Hemi engine, and it's no surprise that it managed to bring in a cool half million dollars (plus 10 percent in fees) at Barrett-Jackson. See it yourself in our high-res image gallery above, and scroll down below for the official auction description.

SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own

Wed, 19 Dec 2012

Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.
We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.
According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Read all the details here.
