Thanks for taking a look at my 1966 Plymouth Fury VIP coupe! The VIP, which stood for "Very Important Plymouth," was an upscale model offered by Plymouth to appeal to business executives and other movers and shakers of the era. Upgrades to the base Fury included special VIP interior fabric, wood trimmed seats and interior accents, and special exterior molding with fake wood inserts. Most VIPs sold were sedans from what I can tell, making this a pretty rare bird indeed


My '66 is a clean, straight, rust-free Southern car, and a mostly original example of this model. The only thing missing is a single Pentastar logo on the lower front fender. All lettering, trim, badging and molding is intact and present on the car. The car features a 318 (5.2L) "Poly" engine with a 1 bbl economy carb and a 727 Torqueflite transmission. As far as I know, both are original to the car. The mileage shown is just below 61,500, and I was told this was original mileage, although I can't document that. I purchased the car a couple years ago from a vintage car consignment dealership, and I was told that the person who consigned the car bought it from the original owner. I also found an ad on the internet on my own from a few years back advertising the car as a one-owner, original mileage car back when it had 59K on the clock. When I bought it, the car had around 60K, and it has only been driven on weekends in good weather since I purchased it.

The car has a recent repaint in the original color, which is Turbine Bronze Metallic. This is the same color as Jay Leno's turbine car, and looks fantastic in my opinion! The quality of the paint is very good overall, and I always keep the car covered when not in use. There are a few imperfections of course, and a couple very small rust bubbles on the lower fenders and door sills. I have included a photo of one spot near the back window that I have attempted to touch up. On the front left fender, the area below the molding has been resprayed poorly. Not sure what happened, and I never even noticed the area until after I purchased the car. The color matches well enough, but the paint is very flat with a lot of dirt and other imperfections. Definitely something I would have attended to if I was not selling the vehicle.

The interior is very presentable as well, but not all original. The seats have been sourced from a different car, as the original VIP interior fabric is very hard to locate these days. They are in good shape, with just a small tear in the driver's seatback. The back seat is perfect. The door cards are original VIP, but there is a blemish on the passenger side. The car has also had its dash pad removed, although the dash has been painted and the holes plugged. Again, something I never noticed until I took the car home! The headliner is perfect as well. Most of the VIPs had a gray headliner, regardless of interior color. 

The steering wheel is cracked and has been recovered. There are numerous cracks in the plastic on the horn button, and on all the gauges (speedometer, gas etc.). The car features a (mostly) working underdash 8-track, and a compass just like my grandpa used to have in his Fury! The original AM radio works as well. The 8-track plays through aftermarket speakers on the back shelf. The gas gauge, temp gauge and voltage all display properly. Speedometer works fine. Turn signals and all light function externally, including the hood mounted signals. However, the directional arrows do not light up on the dashboard, but the clicker works. Heater core started leaking, and has been disabled. Fan blows well but the temperature sliders are stiff. All dash lights still work. 

Car smokes a little when started; runs well after that. The car does not overheat and runs cool even in the summer. Recent engine upgrades include an aluminum radiator, new points, distributor, coil, master cylinder. brake line, plus hoses, belts etc. The 318 will not win any races, but the car will cruise at 70 on the freeway all day without any effort. Tires are recent as well.

I'm only listing the car because I am in-between jobs, and I no longer have a garage to store the car in. Looking to sell this to someone with the resources to care for it, since this is a very special car that I have really enjoyed owning. I can't remember a time when I didn't get a thumbs-up, or get involved in a lengthy conversation about the car when I have had the car out in public. Although it isn't perfect, it is a very presentable, mostly original survivor that has been a pleasure to own. The car has never let me down, and I'm sure it will treat you well if you take care of her.

Barrett-Jackson 2014: 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird passes half a million dollars

The Plymouth Superbird is one of those classic American cars from the muscle car era that has captured the imagination of all sorts of automotive enthusiasts long after its presence on roads and race tracks wore away. It's easy to see why. Where else but in the Swingin' Sixties and Seventies would a car leave the factory with an aerodynamics package that included a pointy beak and a rear spoiler that sat several feet above the rear deck?
The example you see above, which was born in 1970, is one of the finest Superbirds we've ever seen. Combine its complete restoration with its original 426 Hemi engine, and it's no surprise that it managed to bring in a cool half million dollars (plus 10 percent in fees) at Barrett-Jackson. SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own

Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.
We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.
According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Read all the details here.

'71 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible sells for $3.5M [w/video]

We're plenty used to seeing classic cars selling for millions of dollars. It's just that they're usually European: Ferraris, Bugattis, Mercedes and the like. There are some rare American exceptions, usually wearing the names Duesenberg or Shelby. But what we have here is the most expensive Chrysler product ever sold at auction.
The vehicle in question is a Plymouth Barracuda - specifically a 1971 Hemi Cuda Convertible, chassis #BS27R1B315367 - that Mecum Auctions just sold after eight solid minutes of feverish bidding for a high bid of $3.5 million at its auction in Seattle, Washington. That figure positively eclipses the $2.2 million paid for a strikingly similar Hemi Cuda (chassis #BS27R1B269588) fetched nearly seven years ago in Scottsdale and another that was the first muscle car to break the million-dollar mark in 2002.
