The 1962 Starfire is not an average car, and the previous owner of this particular '62 was not your average man. Mr. Pierce bought this car new for $4,683.14, trading in his 1957 Olds for which Lynn Cooper allowed him $2010.29. From Lynn Cooper Oldsmobile & Rambler in Clinton, SC, the Starfire went to Mr. Pierce's hometown of Landrum, SC, where it stayed. My grandfather, Horace "Junior" Nodine, and Virge were life-long friends, and as a child I remember Virge stopping at my dad's body shop with his Massey Ferguson tractor in tow. He'd have a Pepsi and some peanuts, tease me about crashing my go kart or wrecking my bike, and talk to my grandfather about one or the other's garden spots and how we needed some rain. My childhood friend and business partner, Shannon Smith, and I bought the car from Virge's only daughter. We pulled the Olds out of Virge's building, where it had been parked since 1978, just a few curvy roads away from the end of the Appalachian Mountains. If you aren't familiar with Landrum, SC and the wooded expanses at the foot of Hog Back Mountain, affectionately known as Dark Corner, then you may not know of its storied past and the jars of white liquor that made there way out of the thickets of mountain laurel into bustling towns like Greenville and Spartanburg. $2,672.85 of boot was hard to come by in 1962, but if one made good liquor, then the bib overalls probably were never empty. I can't say that I ever had any of Virge's liquor, but by reputation I know it to have been some of the best. My dad passed on his brother, Urid's black, 3-speed, 348 '60 Impala due to a cracked block, but now I know it was my dad's block that was cracked as there is not a family from those foothills with more history and personality than the Pierce's (Ok, well maybe lifelong friends, the Hyder's).
We have the original invoice from Lynn Cooper, the shipping order, the pre-delivery and 1,000 mile inspection sheet, and original Certificate of Title. The car is an original paint car. The right front fender was replaced, as confirmed by my father. Even the exhaust is original. Virge had carpet made and installed it over the factory carpet, which as you can see in the photos contains factory vinyl inserts that serve as floor mats - they look new. The tops of the seats had started peeling, so we did minimal upholstery work. We replaced the bias ply tires with radial white walls, but retained original wheels and hubcaps. Our mechanic drained the gas tank, did a brake job, and we were driving the big-block 394 in a matter of days. The power steering is impeccable, and makes me wonder why Detroit ever varied from this model; it literally steers with one finger. We had a high-end detail guy condition the paint and bring back some of the car's original luster. This is a completely rust free car except for a few small bubbles in the fender that was replaced! This car is waiting to be added to a true car lover's collection. |

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant
Wed, 18 Jun 2014If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.
