GM and Oldsmobile enthusiasts, this is your chance to own a piece of automotive history! The W-body Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme had big shoes to fill, as the RWD Cutlass Supreme it was replacing was one of the best selling vehicles in America during its run. It was part of an elaborate new vehicle program called "GM-10", which was initiated by CEO Roger Smith in 1982. Costing billions of dollars to develop, the GM-10 cars were intended to replace the midsize coupes and sedans produced by Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick. However, the program suffered numerous delays and cost issues related to GM's disastrous 1984 reorganization, and thus only three models were ready for launch by late 1987 - the Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme coupes. The Cutlass would suffer production delays and not be available until early 1988. While the redesigned model was well received by the press, sales were disappointing, primarily because of the disastrous marketing campaign surrounding the vehicle. Labeling it "The New Generation of Oldsmobile", the new Cutlass was featured in TV commercials and print ads with the children of various celebrities hailing it as a vehicle for the "next generation"and "Not Your Father's Oldsmobile". Not only did this campaign completely destroy Oldsmobile's brand equity and drove away generations of loyal buyers overnight, it failed to attract new, younger buyers, who found the car to be too expensive and unappealing. GM's marketers were taking a car designed for Murphy Brown and trying to sell it to Mike Seaver. Sales of the Cutlass Supreme and Oldsmobile overall tanked, never to recover, playing a major factor in the Oldsmobile brand eventually being closed in 2004. In a way, this car can be considered the "car that killed Oldsmobile". Today, this car's marketing campaign is regularly used by business schools as a prominent example of extraordinary failure in marketing and brand management.

The flagship of the Cutlass line was the International model, which was intended to be the flagship of newer, sportier and technologically advanced Oldsmobile models. This vehicle had many advanced features for its day, including its quad bucket seats with a multitude of power adjustments, premium sound system, fully electronic dash, among other features.

This particular model is a 1991 International 2-door, one of only 2,300 built that year. This was the last year for the original styling of the W-body Cutlass, which would be facelifted for 1992. It was specially ordered at Chestown Oldsmobile-GMC near Columbus, Ohio in 1990, and manufactured on December 5, 1990. It is thus equipped with the 3.1L V6, as the more powerful (and troublesome) 3.4L V6 was not yet available. It was taken delivery of by its original owner, driven for a couple years, then subsequently put into storage for a few years. It was taken out of storage and driven off and on until last year. I bought it in September 2012 in Columbus, Ohio, drove it home to Michigan, and parked in my garage, where it has sat ever since. I hoped to restore this car, but I just have too many things going on right now to do it. So I am giving you this unique opportunity to own a rare and collectible vehicle, a very significant piece of GM, Detroit and Oldsmobile history!

This is a great restoration candidate for the GM/Oldsmobile enthusiast! Vehicle ran and drove when parked. Engine ran good and trans shifted ok. It has been sitting in my garage since September 2012. I periodically started it up and let it run. It has all the available options for that year except for a sunroof and driver's information center. All the electronics work except the radio, which is out of the dash. Body is in good shape with no major dents or damage. Has some paint peel on the roof (As is typical of white GM vehicles of this era due to defective primer used during assembly) and rust bubbling on the hood. Vehicle has some rust on the rocker panels by the rear wheels on both sides. Interior is clean and in good shape, aside from some wear on the driver's seat and some slight warping on the top of the dash (another common issue). The underbody was undercoated when the vehicle was new and is rust free! The battery has gone flat from sitting. The hood release is broken, and thus the hood has to be opened manually from the outside. Vehicle has newer brake lines, and new shocks, struts and wheel bearings, as well as a four wheel alignment recently performed, according to the previous owner. The engine has an oil leak, the oil pressure gauge is inop (needs the sensor replaced) and the fuel tank leaks when topped off with fuel and should be replaced. Air conditioning is inop. It has a new compressor, so it may be an electrical issue. Tires are all matching with good tread. Brakes pulsate. All fluids are clean and topped off. Vehicle may be in need of other maintenance.

Vehicle has a clear Michigan title in my name. A 2 volume set of factory service manuals and a 1991 Oldsmobile full line brochure will be included with the car.

This vehicle is sold AS-IS with no guarantee or warranty of any kind offered or implied. A $200 deposit through PayPal is required within 24 hours of winning the auction, the rest will be paid through cash in person upon picking up the vehicle. 10% of the proceeds from this auction will go to RAINN (The Rape Abuse Incest National Network), a organization and cause I strongly support. Buyer must arrange to pick up/tow the car. I WILL NOT SHIP THIS CAR. Buyer must remove the car from my property within a week of winning the auction. If you have any questions feel free to ask! Thank you for looking and happy bidding!

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
