1983 OLDSMOBILE HURST 15TH ANNIVERSARY HURST
If you thought the age of the muscle car ended after the 70's then guess again. In the 80's the body styles being produced drastically changed but that doesn't mean manufacturers stopped building hotrods. In 1983 Oldsmobile put out a newer version of their classic Hurst model and creating only 3,001 kept it just as rare and unique. These cars were fitted with extra body modifications and a carefully tuned motor. It is coated in the original style two tone Black and Silver with multiple pin striping throughout. The car has all of the correct emblems and decals including the 15th anniversary emblem on the hood and the Hurst/Olds graphic on the rear. These cars were kept fully de-chromed and really have a cool racing look. The look much more like an 1980s track car than a daily driver. This cool muscle car has been well cared for its entire life and was bought out of a dealership in Chattanooga Tn. It even comes with the original window sticker which shows some of the optional equipment found in the table below: OPTIONS: Power door locks Soft ray tinted power windows Floor mat inserts Pulse wiper system electric window defogger in rear Four season A/C Rear axle 3:73 ratio Cruise Control Tilt away steering wheel Interior courtesy lamps AM/FM/CD/Casette Radio with dual rear speakers High Capacity Cooling system Exterior paint/trim package Under the hood is a GM 5.0 liter V8 that was very well build from the factory and has no issues. The motor features a low restriction exhaust system, improved cam shift timing, improved valve train components, and a GM computer control system which insures the carburetion and ignition timing are perfectly calibrated. This all combined with the 4 speed automatic THM-200-4R transmission makes for a quick drivetrain. The car utilizes disc brakes up front and drums in rear which are all power assisted. That, along with the power assisted steering, makes for a very easy to drive car. The interior is done in the original style maroon cloth that is in near perfect condition. The reclining bucket seats are very comfortable and whose only flaw are two holes in the drivers side seat smaller than a dime together. The dash is all done in the original style with all of the correct knobs, switches, and gauges. Everything works and even the original style wood grain accents are still in place. The AC controls are also found on the dash as is the Kenwood AM/FM/CD player and also comes with the original AM/FM radio with cassete player that works as it should and bezel. Another cool feature this classic has to offer is the 3 lightning style shifters found on the center console. These work as they should and act like a primitive Auto Shift system. This is the type of car that is considered a desirable classic. Being that it was a limited production model that had similar models produced in the 60's it will only become more rare as time goes on. The interior is nearly flawless and even the clock is functional and keeps time as it should. The only issues inside are the two tiny holes in the drivers seat, and, the cruise control is not working. The body is in great shape but needs a paint job, this 51,419 documented mile car has its original paint but deserves better. a few chips and dings on the exterior as well as missing the two tips on the spoiler which I have priced for $150. This is a great example of a car that can be enjoyed and restored with no risk of any thing but appreciation. This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]
Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant
Wed, 18 Jun 2014If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
