I am selling my 1956 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight 2 door Holiday hardtop. I am the third owner of this car, I purchased it from the second owner who had owned it since the early seventies. This car is in great condition, it is very solid and runs and drives excellent down the road. The car has a fresh rebuilt 324 V8 and transmission that both have less than 10,000 miles on them! The interior is done in a tuck and roll pattern that give the car a cool retro look. The family who owned it before me had spent a bunch of money on it in the late 80's getting the interior and paint done on it. When they painted it they had most of the emblems and some of the trim "shaved" off the car for a more custom look to go with the tuck and roll interior. In the early 90's the car got a rebuilt motor and transmission and was driven for about a year before being parked due to the father dying. Fast forward over twenty years and I bought the car from the family and it was still sitting in the exact spot where they had parked it. I took it and rebuilt the carb since in had been sitting so long, I also dropped the tank and cleaned it out and installed a new fuel sending unit and pickup. I also changed the oil and turned the motor over by hand with some mystery oil in each cylinder to make sure I had fresh lube in the system. Once I got that done the car fired right up and ran so smooth, no smoke, no knocks, it just hummed. After that I rebuilt the entire braking system, it has a completely rebuilt master cylinder(including re-plating the rod) I flushed all the lines out, installed new wheel cylinders all the way around, and also installed new brake shoes. I also replaced all of the drums due to most of them being out of round. While I was in there I replaced and repacked all the wheel bearing too. Once all that was done I took the car for a spin, the car goes down the road so smooth and runs very well with tons of power. I have been cruising it around since fall and it always fires up and works great. I have all the trim pieces for the car that were shaved off of it since I had big intentions of restoring it back to factory condition. The motor is the factory Olds motor but when it was rebuilt someone painted it orange, I was going to re-detail it and paint it back to the correct color. The car will need some paint, it is old and faded, there are some spots where you can see bondo that is cracking where they shaved the emblems. The power windows didn't work when I got it so I pulled the front door panels and cleaned and lubed the tracks and now they work great. The same thing would need to be done to get the rear ones to work. Also the speedo and fuel gauge aren't working but I haven't had a chance to look at it, it should be something easy. I have spent about $1600.00 on the car since I got it doing all the things I listed and as sad as it makes me, I am selling this car, I had every intention to restore it back to original and keep it forever, but sometimes plans change. This is a solid nice runing and driving car that could be used as is or restored back to original. Cars like these are getting very hard to find especially in the 2 door Holiday hardtop. For those of you that know these Oldsmobiles you know what these ninety-eights are worth, now and completely restored. I have driven this car about five hundred miles myself with one trip being almost fifty miles, I would trust this car to take me anywhere; and everyone looks at it as you drive it!! Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6
Wed, 11 Dec 2013Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.

Thu, 09 Oct 2014The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems
Mon, 30 Jun 2014General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
