1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible              This Oldsmobile up for auction is the perfect classic droptop to enjoy the rest of the summer and fall weather. I can't see anyone not loving this car at first sight! These 60's and 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential, and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember, When the top goes down, the price goes up! According to the previous owner, this Olds does have the original numbers matching Rocket engine, and I double checked to make sure. He was telling the truth! The last seven digits of the vehicle identification number are on the block. This is absolutely the numbers matching block that was meticulously detailed. I checked the casting numbers, and they are 39558, so this is the only block used for the Oldsmobile Rocket 350 engine in 1972. Only 1,025 of these Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible's were made with an automatic transmission in 1972 making this 442 a very rare and highly sought after model. This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible is a very unique car to have. Whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership with the 442 option. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website makes the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. This model comes with original 442 factory grilles. I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in any major accidents. This Olds is steered with the awesome 442 sport wheel that can be adjusted to whatever height you prefer with the factory tilt wheel. This car drives down the road straight as an arrow with fingertip control. There is also a power trunk inside the glove box. It's very hard to find a Matador Red 442 convertible with White stripes, a White convertible top, and White interior in this condition. Everyone who knows these cars, knows that this color, and interior combination is the most popular, and most desirable. The nice white convertible top was replaced within the last year with the new back glass window, and a new well liner. The doors are extremely solid throughout the bottom of the doors, and they have new door hinges, so these doors line up like back in 1972. This Olds was ordered with the factory undercoating, so I believe that's why it held up in this condition. I tried to replace all of the factory decals in the engine compartment, and under the trunk lid to make this Oldsmobile appear the way it did when it rolled out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1972. The front and rear seats were also recently reupholstered with new foam. I've owned many of these over the past 35 years, and these seats are more comfortable than the original seats ever were. The front and the rear floor pans were replaced with the proper GM A-body floor pans. There is brand new black carpeting with a set of four new floor mats. When you're in the drivers seat looking out the factory tinted windshield over those two bold scoops, a smiles just appears on your face. This Olds rides on a great set of four like new P225/70R14 inch B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A raised white lettered tires mounted on Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color. All four wheels have chrome lug nuts with the bolt-on center caps, and the beauty trim rings. There is a 10 bolt rear-end, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. This Olds sits up just right with newer shocks and new rear springs. The original trunk floor had some minor repair, and was then coated with A/C Delco factory Black and Aqua spatter spray for the trunk to stay in nice condition for many years to come. There is a new rubber trunk gasket, and inside the trunk is a new trunk mat that carries a full size Super Stock II spare with the original restored jack and crow bar. This way if there is ever a mishap on the road with a quick tire change you can still look complete. The frame is still in good condition. The California convertible top boot that can be placed over the top when the top is down is also in the trunk. There is a full set of wheel opening moldings, and the stainless steel lower rocker cover moldings on both sides are in good condition. A lot of the chrome was replaced or is in good drivers quality condition. The stainless trunk lip trim is still nice, and the chrome around the back of the top is in very good condition. This convertible was ordered from the factory with the rare air conditioning option. It is not hooked up, but I believe everything is in place to easily make it work with a belt and a charge. The majority of people didn't order A/C back in the day, since they had the option to put the top down. It is always nice to at least have that option to put the A/C belt back on and give it a charge if the new owner would like. The original dash pad is in very nice shape, and I couldn't find any cracks anywhere. An original Oldsmobile AM/FM stereo is mounted in place, but is not hooked up, since a nice Kenwood AM/FM CD player was placed in the glove box. An American Bass 800 amp power amp is mounted under the well liner in the trunk, and a pair of Kenwood 6x9 inch speakers are mounted in the proper spots behind the rear seat. This way everyone in the car can actually hear music when the top is down. Fortunately this convertible survived without having the inside panels cut up like they typically were back in the day. As seen in the pictures the interior is in very nice condition. There is a new battery with new positive and negative battery cables, new spark plugs, new spark plug wires, new points, new rotor, new distributor cap, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, new alternator, new ignition coil, new voltage regulator, new relays, new pcv valve, new air filter, and the oil was recently changed. Mostly all of the hoses were replaced as well. Actually it looks like they all were. The 4 barrel QuadraJet carburetor was also freshly rebuilt. Plus, everyone will know you're coming with the brand new high performance dual exhaust rumbling with chrome exhaust tips. This car has power steering and power disc brakes. Steering these cars is simply a delight, and stopping them with power disk brakes is wonderful with the new power brake booster, and the new master cylinder. The fan shroud is new, along with a new fan clutch, and fan. There is a newer water pump and radiator for maximum cooling. The top and bottom radiator hoses were replaced, and so were both belts. The only belt missing is the A/C belt, which from past experience saves on gas mileage. The emergency brake cable set up was all replaced, so the emergency brake works properly. There is a new washer fluid container. The wipers work on both speeds with new wiper blades. There are all new Wagner Halogen head lights, and bright lights. All four tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, all four cornering lights, emergency lights, and even the license plate light all work as they should. The turn signals both shut off properly when a turn is made. The speedometer and odometer work properly, and the gas gauge is accurate. The horn, lighter, and clock do not work, but the clock is set on the best time of the day. It's always 4:42 time!! The entire dash bezel lights up as it should. The factory ordered map light under the rear view mirror even works. There is a factory Oldsmobile vanity mirror on the passenger side sun visor. The original owner's manual, emissions control systems warranty information, and the consumer information pamphlets come in the original plastic case inside the glove box. The previous owner said that the mileage is correct, although the mileage is exempt nowadays on the clean and clear Wisconsin title. An exorbitant amount of time, money, and effort went into keeping this classic convertible in tip top condition. This Matador Red beauty starts right up every time, and I personally wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere. I am a half hour south of General Mitchell Airport in South Milwaukee. I would be more than happy to pick up any lucky winner at the airport in case they would like to drive this drop top home. Naturally, you would want to factor in the cost of airfare, gas, and incidentals versus having it delivered safely to your front door, but I just thought I would make the offer. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find, especially in this color combination. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible listed at $50,715 in high condition, $30,360 in average condition, and $17,710 in the lowest condition with the Rocket 350/180hp-air conditioning options. The lowest condition value would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. I'm not saying that this is a Barrett-Jackson museum piece by any stretch of the imagination, but all of the hard work was done on this Oldsmobile convertible, and all that is left is a new owner to jump in and start enjoying life everywhere they drive. This is a true red beauty that I can't see anyone being disappointed with. I believe everywhere this car is driven, you will be the spectacle of the neighborhood. Whatever this classic convertible sells for in this no reserve auction is a win/win investment. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value. These GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school, or maybe wants to show off at their high school reunion to prove how cool they still are. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. I try to list everything I can think of when I write a description, so every potential bidder can make the most informed decision prior to placing their bid. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. What you see is exactly what you get! This car is being offered at "No Reserve" on a 3-day listing. It will sell to the highest bidder on Friday evening at 6:00pm Pacific, 8:00pm Central, or 9:00pm Eastern time depending on your location. This way the new owner could actually be cruising with the top down by this weekend! There are still plenty of car shows to attend this season!! Thank You for taking the time to view my auction!!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
