This is a 41 year old car that has been driven and enjoyed. Rock chips and some scratches that have been touched up. beginning rust under the trunk mat in the left rear area of the trunk. Minor bubbles in paint on lower deck lid. Power seat and Cruise are currently non-working."

I bought this car because it was my dream car when I was a kid. My 1st  frame-off restoration was a 51 Chevy Pick-up just like Grandpa's, and I was wanting

a muscle car to restore next. I found it in a one car garage 20 miles from my house. It had been driven monthly on short trips to keep everything lubricated, but had not
been cared for the way I felt it deserved. My goal was to make it mechanically safe to drive and cruise until winter, then start a frame-off restoration.  90% of that has been done and I drove it for about 20 miles last night. Tons of power and torque, the 455 matched with the 400 turbo automatic transmission explains why these big block cars are so sought after. I have an opportunity to purchase some property and to do so this car has to go.

This is what I have discovered...keep in mind, I'm not an expert, but I will describe this car to the best of my ability.

VIN# 3J67M2M201205

Decoding the Vin # on google I learned this was a (3) Oldsmobile (J) Cutlass Supreme and a  (67) convertible equipped from the factory with the largest (M) 350 engine w/4 barrel carb
and factory dual exhaust. the (2) confirms it is a 1972 and the (M) states that it was built at the Lansing Michigan Plant. The remaining numbers refer to number built.

I learned there were 11,572 Convertibles in 72.   The 442 became an "option" in 1972.  Black was not a highly ordered color, let alone the highly sought after "triple black"
you see here.  I had a couple of friends that own or have owned Cutlass 442's and they confirmed this was a 455/400 by looking at the heads/intake and numbers in various places.
Hard to nail down how very few triple black big block convertibles were actually built!

So...It is not a numbers matching engine and transmission, but it is a very desirable, period correct upgrade.  I was also encouraged when I was told that all brackets and mounts are correct
for this 455 motor.   The Factory correct compressor for the air conditioning turns freely. I removed the old belt and have not yet installed a new one.

COWL# ST72 34267LAN42 5858
TR 970      19 B PNT             I do not know what all this means, but wanted to provide full disclosure.  What I do know is this.

(B) indicates a factory BLACK car    (970) indicates a convertible with buckets seats       (LAN) indicates it was built in Lansing, Michigan

I have installed the following items in the last 90 days and have receipts to suppport. New Water Pump, New Radiator (I still have the original), New hoses and radiator fluids, New power steering box,PS hose and fluids. Also - New brake booster and master cylinder. Brakes and pads were good but front calipers were just replaced. Lastly, oil and filter were just changed.

Interior is original and complete but shows a little wear. A couple of minor tears but nothing glaring.  No cracks in the dash and no cutouts for aftermarket items, It does have a modern radio
with speakers that just "float" against the seats.

Convertible top has been replaced with a quality, correct one and new motor installed at the same time.. No boot.

As a driver the trunk pan is fine, as a show car it would need replaced.

Body sheet metal is very straight.

Triple Black 1972 442's Convertibles with factory air and a period correct 455/400 turbo automatic don't come along every day,  I'm not some salesman trying to
convince you this is a show car...this is a driver....not a trailer queen.  It's a rare combination that when completed, at whatever level...will be a VALUABLE Collectable.

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

eBay Find of the Day: 1976 GMC Motorhome is a jolly green giant

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

If you have a need to relive the 1970s, then here is the vehicle for you. This groovy blast from the past is a 1976 GMC Motorhome currently for auction in Florida on eBay Motors, and it is one green machine - just not in the modern sense.
The seller claims that this beast has had just two owners and has covered a mere 61,308 miles in its decades on the road. It's reportedly never been restored or repainted and comes with all of the necessary books and manuals. A 7.5-liter (455-cubic-inch) Oldsmobile V8 with a three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission powering the front wheels propels this far-out RV, and the double set of rear wheels out back use a self-leveling air suspension to provide a cushy ride.
The purported low miles and good condition really make this GMC a stand out, though. The exterior combination of lime stripes and beige with just a touch of green is like nothing else on the road today. Plus, the polished bumpers and wheels make it all pop. Inside, it's even better with monochromatic green upholstery and shag carpet. It features everything you'd ever need on a long trip, including a bathroom, kitchenette and lots of seating. The only hint of modernization is an HD TV next to the stove, but its size is a perfect fit for the hole there.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
