1972 Oldsmobile "Genuine 442"    This Olds is the real deal 442, and not a clone! The meaning of the 442 is 4-speed 4 barrel carburator, and dual exhaust. This 442 has the potential to have it all!!! I recently purchased this car in a package deal, and I don't have the time to mess with it, or the room as you can see from all the projects in the background. This 1972 Oldsmobile 442 is a very unique car to have. It is the perfect candidate for a "Drag Car" or to restore back to its original former glory. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership with the 442 option. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website makes the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 models started life as a Cutlass, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. The only way to really know if any particular 1972 was ordered as a 442 is if you have the build sheet, or you knew the car from day one. I have neither, but I've been involved with and loving 442's for over 35 years, and from all of my past experience I believe this specific car is 99.999% a real 442 as ordered from the factory. This car has the beautiful original Saturn Gold code 53 paint as shown on the data plate. The stripes on the hood look original, but someone added some silly white design in the pin stripes that run along the sides of the car. The original 442 grilles were missing, so they were replaced with Cutlass Supreme grilles. After carefully looking this car over I would say that I saw no signs of this car ever being involved in any major accidents. I believe all the body panels to be original to this car. I believe this real 442 has all of its original paint. These fenders have the original 442 holes behind the emblems, and are in very good condition. The doors are both super nice, and open and close like when this 442 was new. The drivers door still even has the original blue vin number decal. There is just some minimal rust behind the passenger wheel well. The drivers side rear quarter is in nice shape. Even the inner and outer inside wheel wells are still both in good condition. It would be relatively easy to prep this body for paint. It doesn't have any wavy bondo along the sides, because there is no bondo anywhere that I could see. This body is the same body and paint that came with this car in 1972. I couldn't find any spots on the entire car that were touched up. This 442 has a nice frame, and the floor pans are solid as shown in the pictures. The trunk carries a jack and crowbar with a full size spare, but the trunk pan will need some work. The gas tank has been removed, but comes with this sale, so any repair can be easily done. This 442 was primarily used as a drag car, and then it had sat for many years, so the mileage could possibly be the original. This car is clean and original enough for me to believe the mileage is original. This 442 has dual sport mirrors and bucket seats, but the console is long gone. The bucket seats will need to be redone, but they have some new seat covers on them until they get reupholstered. The back seat is still in very nice condition as shown in the pictures. The original carpet is in decent condition with new floor mats. The last owner used this 442 as a drag car set-up with a Chevy big block 396, and all that's left under the hood is what you see in the pictures. The engine compartment is clean, and ready to drop in whatever the new owner would like to put in it. The headers are still in place attached to an awesome pair of dual flowmasters. The headers were wrapped, so no varmints could crawl into the ports. The prior owner spent $1,000's of dollars on a high performance ET 12-bolt posi-traction rear end including ladder bars. I do have an Oldsmobile Rocket 350 with a turbo 350 transmission that I received in another car deal, where that gentleman said everything was completely rebuilt. That engine and transmission are in Racine, WI, which is 10 miles north of Kenosha. They are both attached, and sitting on a wood crate in a shop I share with a buddy. I will include that engine and transmission in this deal if the winning bidder would like. Although the previous owner started to transform this 442 to a manual transmission set-up, so if the new owner wants to finish the transformation, they will have to come up with a manual transmission. I do not have one of those. It has some nice aftermarket pedals in place, and the spot for the 4-speed shifter was cut-out in the center where the automatic shifter used to be. The shifter box has not been welded in yet, so it could be switched back to original if the new owner so desires. The Hurst shifter handle is just placed in the brand new 4-speed shifter boot. Whether this car is converted to a 4-speed or put back to an automatic, I can't see anyone who buys this car being disappointed. There is a set of four Uniroyal Tiger Paw raised white lettered tires mounted on a set of Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color. All four wheels have the center caps, and the beauty trim rings. There is a pair of Lakewood Drag air shocks on the rear suspension that seem to be holding air nicely. The chrome is all still in fairly nice drivers quality condition. The original dash pad is in very nice condition with no cracking anywhere. Typically these cars were all hacked up back in the day, but somehow this dash survived. It was never cut up to fit an aftermarket stereo. There is an aftermarket tachometer attached to the steering wheel. The back seat is in pretty nice condition, and I think many of the interior panels are still very useable. I saw no cracks or chips in the windshield, and the remainder of the glass is all in good condition. This is a power steering car with power disc brakes. What you see is exactly what you get! These mostly complete older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find, especially in this color combination. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 listed at $39,490 in high condition, $19,140 in average condition, and $12,815 is the lowest possible value of a real 442 needing a complete restoration. In my opinion this Oldsmobile is in far better condition than the lowest amount of what Nada has for the classified value. Whatever this classic 442 sells for in this "No Reserve" auction is a win/win investment. These cars have shown to consistently escalate in value with each quarter. The GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school, or had one and wants to restore one instead of paying the crazy prices to purchase one already finished. This would be a great father and son project or for the ERA gals of the past, a fun project for the mother and daughter combination that may be mechanically inclined. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile 442. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
