1970 Oldsmobile 442 4-speed-original Paint Code 28 Twilight Blue A/c Car on 2040-cars

                             Opportunities like this don't come around very often. Why drive around in a 442 with a column shift, automatic floor shifter, or even the cool dual gate shifter when you can have a factory 4-speed 442?? Remember, the first four in 442 stands for 4-speed!!! This is an extremely rare 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with the real deal 4-speed. Every true Olds guy knows that 1970 is the most highly sought after of all the years in the 442 line. The majority of those same guys will tend to agree that 1970 is the most expensive year to own in the pinnacle of the muscle car era. Any 1970 with a factory 4-speed is also the year that usually brings in the most dollars when a muscle car is restored to high end standards when it rolls over a live auction block. This 442 was originally ordered with a 4-speed and factory air conditioning in the beautiful Twilight blue as shown by the paint code 28 on the data plate. According to the previous owner this genuine 442 is a true W-30 that does have the original 12-bolt positive traction 442 rear end with the original boxed control arms, and the original rear sway bar. There is no way to prove this real 442 4-speed with air conditioning to be a true W-30 unless there is documentation. I looked for the build sheet under the carpet, and inside the front bucket seats. No luck in either spot, however I never looked under the gas tank. I am leaving that treasure hunt up to the new owner. I've only owned this car for less than a month, and I know if I found the build sheet I would end up keeping this car to bring it up to six figure status. I made this purchase in a massive package deal with parts, and another 1970 W-30. After realizing the overwhelming projects that I have going on I chose to sell this one. The same owners names are on both 1970 344 v.i.n. title's. The other 442 W-30 was purchased brand new with special ordered paint in 1970 by this same couple. They loved the W-30 they bought brand new so much that they bought this paint code 28 Twilight Blue 442 that I am selling. The clean and clear title was issued to them on July 2nd, 1991. The actual mileage stated on the odometer was 77,601 at that time. The current odometer reading is 81,273. I have no way to verify the mileage as original. Nowadays the mileage comes up exempt on a new title when a car is freshly registered that is over 10 to 20 years old depending on the state. This genuine 442 is 44 years old, and is truly a barn find that has been sitting for more than 20 years. There was no reason to fake or clone W-30's back then. I will explain everything I know about this real 442 4-speed car, so the lucky bidder who wins this rare gem can decide exactly what they would like to spend prior to placing their bid. I would estimate this car needing 20-30K invested to bring this 442 up to the high end level that it deserves. This car has had only one re-paint in Viper red. The paint work on this car is inferior in my eyes, and a 10-12 footer at best! The fenders on this car are original 1970 442 fenders, but not the original 1970 442 W-30 fenders that came with this car. I decided to keep those, since they are very rare. I've had many Cutlass and 442's over the years, but have had very few W-30's. Although I do have almost 40 years experience to spot a real one. This car had the original W-30 red fenders wells, but I needed them for another car. The red fender wells that are currently on the car are a pair that I purchased off eBay from a gentleman in New York. He said he took them off his 1968 W-30, so they do have the openings on the flat portion in the front of the wheel wells where the ram-air scoop tubes used to come through on a 1968 W-30 car. From everything I've seen, and have been told about this car, I personally believe this to be a true W-30, but the gold is in the build sheet. This is an original ram-air 442, but the hood is not original to the car. It does have the proper chrome twistdowns, and the receivers that both work and twist great. The engine currently in this car came with the package deal, and was previously in this car, but was sold separate from the car. According to the gentleman I bought these cars and parts from who is a preacher, he said this engine does not match. It is believed to be an Oldsmobile Rocket 455 from the early 70's that ran well. This engine does have the proper 396021 F casting numbers. It was just placed into the engine compartment for this sale. I never attempted to start it up, but I figured having this big block Rocket 455 in the car would be better than selling it as a rolling chassis. I had my mechanic try to hook up as many of the proper brackets and parts that I could find to have it looking nice for this quick 3-day "No Reserve" auction. We are pretty sure all of the air conditioning parts are mounted including the condensor in front of the radiator. There is no transmission, clutch, or exhaust included, so the new owner does have his work cut out for him. There are still several swap meets to attend this season, but mostly every part for these cars are made in very nice aftermarket reproduction. I don't want to sugar coat anything in this auction. This car will need a complete and full restoration where every part and every panel will need attention. If this 442 does get documented as a genuine W-30, I would suggest that this car receives a complete frame-off restoration. I truly believe that it deserves that same treatment simply being a true Twilight Blue 1970 442 4-speed with factory air conditioning. That color combination with black W-30 stripes, and those options is extremely rare. Most of the chrome is present including a rear cut-out back bumper. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and have never been replaced. There has been some shoddy patch work done, so to do this car right, I believe it should have all new floors. The carpeting is worn, but there is a new set of four black carpeted floor mats. The front bucket seats had some repair work, so they appear in pretty nice condition. The rear seats are originals, and look very nice. The headliner and rear package tray will need to be replaced, but the side panels in the front and rear all look relatively nice. I didn't see any cracks in the dash board, and the original AM radio is still in the dash. This dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereo's. This 442 sits on a set of four Firestone Firehawk raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with good tread mounted on 15 inch Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color. I've always felt that these cars ride best on 15 inch wheels. All four wheels have all four center caps, all four beauty trim rings, and chrome lug nuts. The original trunk floor will need to be replaced, but still has the original trunk mat with a jack, jack stand, and crow bar. Also included in the trunk is a 15 inch full size Super Stock II spare tire. In my opinion the frame still appears in nice shape, and this car is more than worthy of bringing this real 1970 442 back to its former glory. This 442 came from the factory with manual disc brakes. Apparently, from what I've been told, all true W-30's came with manual brakes. Furthermore, the seventh digit in the vin number is an M, which stipulates that this model was built in Michigan. All of the 1970 W-30 models came out of Lansing Michigan only. Included in the glove box is a 1970 Oldsmobile original owner's manual, the 1970 Oldsmobile new vehicle warranty and owner protection plan, the 1970 Oldsmobile consumer information pamphlet, and the 1970 Oldsmobile new car accessories list all in an original 1970 Oldsmobile plastic dealer case. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has a genuine 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with a 4-speed, and air conditioning listed at $59,150 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $36,270 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! They have the lowest condition value at $24,830 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The numbers on a documented 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 4-speed with air conditioning are $119,340 in high condition, $81,120 in average condition, and $56,940 in low condition. Whatever this classic genuine 442 sells for in this quick "No Reserve" 3-day auction is a win/win investment. The 70-72 442 muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 442 model years. This genuine 1970 Oldsmobile 442 4-speed car is for the father and son that has a lot of spare time on their hands, and wants to bond as a family unit with a massive project, or for the high end muscle car restoration shop that does these cars to show car quality status.
