I HAVE FOR SALE A VERY RARE 1967 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS 442 CONVERTIBLE WITH BUCKET SEATS, FACTORY TILT SPORT WHEEL AND
FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING. ONE OF ONLY ABOUT 3,150 CONVERTIBLES BUILT. THIS CAR WAS SOLD NEW AT RUDMAN OLDSMOBILE
INC. IN HIGHLAND PARK FLORIDA ON DECEMBER 21,1966. THIS WAS A ONE OWNER CAR UNTIL 2001 WHEN THE ORIGINAL OWNER
PASSED AWAY AT 99 YEARS OF AGE. HE LEFT THE CAR TO HIS DAUGHTER WHO SPENT OVER $7,000 IN THE EARLY 2000'S TO HAVE
THE ORIGINAL ENGINE REBUILT, TRANSMISSION REBUILT, BRAKES AND NUMEROUS OTHER ITEMS REBUILT OR REPLACED. THE CAR
HAD JUST OVER 100,000 MILES AT THE TIME. I HAVE ALL THE RECORDS FOR THE WORK SHE HAD DONE.
I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM HER IN 2008, IT STILL HAD 100% ORIGINAL PAINT AND THE ORIGINAL TOP FROM 1966. THE
PAINT WAS A LITTLE TOO FAR GONE TO BE A NICE SURVIVOR PAINT CAR HAVING NUMEROUS AREAS OF LACQUER CRACKING AND SOME
SPRAY CAN TOUCH UPS IN A FEW AREAS WHERE HER FATHER HAD SCRAPED THE SIDES OF THE CAR ON THE GARAGE. IN 2009 I
STARTED THE RESTORATION OF THE CAR, I COMPLETELY STRIPPED THE CAR OF ALL TRIM,EMBLEMS, RUBBER GASKETS AND BUMPERS.
THE ENTIRE INTERIOR WAS ALSO REMOVED BEFORE GOING TO THE BODY SHOP. THE ENTIRE CAR WAS STRIPPED TO BARE METAL,
ANY MINOR RUST WAS REPAIRED WITH NEW METAL. ALL DENTS WERE PULLED OUT AND FINISHED. ONLY A VERY MINIMAL AMOUNT OF
FILLER WAS USED TO SMOOTH THE BODY AND MAKE IT LASER STRAIGHT. THE ENTIRE FRONT END WAS REMOVED, BUMPERS, FENDERS,
RADIATOR SUPPORT AND INNER FENDERS. I BROUGHT THE CAR HOME BEFORE PAINTING WITH THE FRONT END OFF SO THAT I COULD
PERSONALLY DETAIL THE FRAME, ENGINE, HEATER BOX AND AIR CONDITIONING AND ALL COMPONENTS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
THE RADIATOR SUPPORT, INNER FENDERS AND HEATER BOX WERE ALL POWDER COATED IN LOW GLASS BLACK. THE HEATER CORE,
BLOWER MOTOR, FAN SPEED RESISTOR WERE REPLACED. THE FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WAS COMPLETELY RESTORED USING
AN EXACT REPRODUCTION A/C CONDENSER, THE CORRECT STYLE ORIGINAL DRIER BOTTLE WAS REMANUFACTURED AND ALL RUBBER O
RINGS IN THE SYSTEM HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE A/C BELT HAS NEVER BEEN PUT BACK ON THE CAR SINCE THE RESTORATION AND
THE SYSTEM HAS NEVER YET BEEN RE CHARGED WITH R-12 REFRIGERANT. THE VALVE COVERS WERE REPLACED WITH ORIGINAL
FACTORY STYLE W-30 CHROME VALVE COVERS, THE ORIGINAL AIR CLEANER LID HAS BEEN RE CHROMED. THE ORIGINAL NUMBERS
MATCHING DATE CODE CORRECT ROCHESTER CARBURETOR HAS BEEN CONCOURSE RESTORED AND LOOKS AS NEW. ALL PARTS IN THE
ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND OR RESTORED EXACTLY AS FACTORY ORIGINAL JUST LIKE IT WAS STILL ON THE
SHOW ROOM FLOOR INCLUDING THE CORRECT ORIGINAL STYLE 1967 BATTERY WITH SPRING RING BATTERY CABLES. THE CAR WAS
BROUGHT BACK TO THE BODY SHOP, FRONT FENDERS PAINTED OFF THE CAR AND THEN REASSEMBLED. I PERSONALLY PUT THE ENTIRE
CAR BACK TOGETHER TO INSURE THAT IT WAS NOT DAMAGED OR SCRATCHED AND THAT ONLY THE CORRECT BOLTS, NUTS AND SCREWS
WERE INSTALLED EXACTLY AS ORIGINAL. BOTH THE ORIGINAL FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS WERE SENT OUT AND RE CHROMED. THE
ORIGINAL FRONT BUMPER VALANCE WAS POWDER COATED SILVER AS ORIGINAL . ALL EMBLEMS WERE REPLACED WITH NOS EMBLEMS.
MOST OF THE FACTORY STAINLESS TRIM WAS SENT OUT WITH ALL DINGS AND DENTS REMOVED AND THEN POLISHED. SEVERAL PIECES
OF STAINLESS WHEEL TRIM ARE NOS. ALL EXTERIOR STAINLESS WINDOW FUZZIE SEALS WERE REPLACED. ALL DOOR RUBBERS, TRUNK
AND HOOD SEALS, BUMPER RUBBERS, DOOR BUMPERS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THE CAR HAS ALL FOUR ORIGINAL T-3 HEADLIGHTS. THE
HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES WERE REPAINTED BEFORE INSTALLATION. MOST OF THE INTERIOR IS STILL ORIGINAL WITH THE EXCEPTION
OF THE FRONT SEAT UPHOLSTERY AND THE CARPETS. THE SHIFTER BEZEL WAS RE CHROMED AND THE CHROME PLASTIC DOOR ARMREST
BASES HAVE BEEN REPLACED AS WELL AS THE DOOR SILL PLATES. THE TOP IS THE ORIGINAL TOP THAT WAS ON THE CAR WHEN
BUILT IN 1966. THE REAR PLASTIC WINDOW PANEL HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE. THE ORIGINAL BLACK PARADE BOOT IS IN PERFECT
CONDITION. THE CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL WITH PROTECTO PLATE, THE CONVERTIBLE TOP MANUAL, THE
ORIGINAL TIRE PRESSURE DECAL AND THE ORIGINAL CLIMATE CONTROL TAG THAT WAS HANGING ON THE FAN SPEED SWITCH WHEN
NEW. THE CAR COMES WITH ALL FIVE ORIGINAL 14 X 6 SSI RIMS WITH FIRESTONE WIDE OVAL REDLINE TIRES IN NEW CONDITION
AND THE ORIGINAL DUAL WHITE STRIPE SPARE TIRE. THE RIMS ARE IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION AND I HAVE RESTORED
THE BLACK PAINT INSERTS WITH THE ORIGINAL LOW GLOSS BLACK PAINT. THE 18 X 8 AND 18 X 10 RIMS WITH REDLINE STRIPE
TIRES SEEN IN THE PICTURES ARE INCLUDED IN THE SALE. I WILL ALSO INCLUDE AN ORIGINAL FACTORY CORRECT 1967 AM/FM
RADIO AND A VERY RARE AND VERY EXPENSIVE RALLY PACK GAUGE CLUSTER WITH TACH. I HAVE ANOTHER SET OF BLACK UNCUT KICK
PANELS. THE RADIO SPEAKERS HAD BEEN INSTALLED BEFORE I PURCHASED THE CAR. EVERYTHING ON THE CAR IS IS WORKING AS
IT SHOULD WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE INTERIOR FAN SPEED SWITCH. THIS WAS A FRAME ON RESTORATION INCLUDING A NEW
FUEL TANK AND ALL WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO CONCOURSE STANDARDS. THE CAR STILL DOES NOT HAVE A SCRATCH ON IT! I ALSO
STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL FACTORY CHROME DOOR EDGE GUARDS AND A NOS SET THAT I NEVER PUT ON. I DID NOT PUT THE TOP
DOWN FOR THE PICTURES AS IT WAS 18 DEGREES THE DAY I TOOK THEM. I BOUGHT THIS CAR WHEN I LIVED IN CALIFORNIA AND
THE CAR IS STILL REGISTERED WITH THE CALIFORNIA BLACK PLATES EVEN THOUGH THE REGISTRATION STICKER SAYS 1967!

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Ferrari FF pitted against Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser in crazy Generation Gap comparison

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

The folks behind Generation Gap have lost their minds with this latest video. The goal here is to determine the ultimate family cruiser, but the choices are what you would least expect, with a heavily modded 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser going up against a 2012 Ferrari FF.
You might anticipate an over-40-year-old Oldsmobile to pale in comparison to any modern Ferrari, but this wagon has a ton of secrets under its skin thanks to Lingenfelter. First, it packs a supercharged LS3 V8 with a claimed 650 horsepower and a six-speed manual gearbox. That big upgrade in power is further helped with air suspension and massive Wilwood disc brakes. The result is nothing short of deafening, with blaring yelps whenever the driver even nudges the accelerator.
The alternative sounds just as good, albeit in very different way. The Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 pumps out 651 hp and 504 pound-feet with a part-time all-wheel drive system. While the FF lacks a lot of the hauling ability of the Olds, it makes up for the deficit in handling, luxury, and in many eyes, simply by having the famous prancing horse on the grille.
