UK electric motor maker YASA expands production 50-fold for EVs

LONDON — British electric motor manufacturer YASA said on Thursday it was increasing its production capacity from 2,000 to 100,000 units with a new factory to tap into growing demand from carmakers for greener technologies. Automakers are racing to build greener vehicles and improve charge times in a bid to meet rising customer demand and air quality targets but Britain lacks sufficient manufacturing capacity, an area the government is building up. Last year, the government picked a site in central England to house a new automotive battery development facility, which will develop the processes required to manufacture the latest battery advancements. On Thursday, YASA, based near the English city of Oxford, said it had raised another 15 million pounds ($21 million) as part of its expansion. "Our customers are looking to adopt innovative new technologies such as YASA's axial-flux electric motors and controllers in order to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding hybrid and pure electric automotive market," said Chief Executive Chris Harris. The firm exports 80 percent of production and has worked with companies including Britain's two biggest carmakers Jaguar Land Rover and Nissan as well as Aston Martin. JLR will decide this year whether to build electric cars in its home market, previously citing factors such as pilot testing and support from science and government as pre-requisites. Nissan promising autonomous car production by 2020

Nissan will bring the autonomous car to consumers by the end of this decade. The announcement was made by CEO Carlos Ghosn at the company's US headquarters in Irvine, CA. Nissan has already begun construction of a dedicated proving ground for the self-driving cars in Japan, with completion targeted for the end of 2014.
Teaming with MIT, Stanford, Oxford and others, Nissan has already outfitted Leaf EVs with the Autonomous Drive (Nissan's brand name for the tech), a suite of new technologies developed from the brand's existing Safety Shield technology. The current iteration of Autonomous Drive uses the Around-View Monitoring system and laser scanners to analyze the environment, while artificial intelligence systems have been installed to help navigate and operate in a changing environment.
While it's easy to say that Nissan will bring the technology to market within the next six or seven years, it's more difficult to say at what price Autonomous Drive will be available. Most remarkable about all of this is Nissan's claim that self-driving cars will be both commercially viable and available at "realistic prices for consumers." It's expecting Autonomous Drive to be available across its range within two vehicle generations.

2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid arrives with supercharged engine, 26 mpg combined

Nissan just launched the fully redesigned Pathfinder for the 2013 model year, and now, there's a fuel-sipping hybrid version making its debut here at the New York Auto Show. The 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid packs all of the same features found in the standard crossover, but offers slightly better fuel economy and an improved cruising range, to boot.
The new hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter supercharged engine (we're assuming it's a four-cylinder, though Nissan hasn't specified) coupled with a lithium-ion battery and 15-kilowatt electric motor, capable of producing 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque - 10 less horsepower but three more pound-feet than the standard V6 Pathfinder. Nissan says the hybrid crossover will be rated at 25/27 miles per gallon (city/highway), with a 26-mpg combined rating. This means that on a full tank, the cruising range of the Pathfinder Hybrid is a cool 526 miles.
What's cool about the hybrid packaging is that Nissan has managed not to have it interfere with any of the interior functionality - the Pathfinder Hybrid still packs just as much cargo and passenger space as its naturally aspirated sibling. Official pricing has not been announced, but Nissan expects the hybrid to command an additional $3,000 over the standard model.
