********** 2009 NISSAN 370Z TOURING **********

THE 2009 NISSAN 370Z IS NOW EQUIPPED WITH A POWERFUL 3.7-LITER V-6 UNDER THE HOOD. THE BIGGER ENGINE, WHICH PRODUCES 332 HORSEPOWER AND 270 LB-FT OF TORQUE, WILL POWER A NEW Z THAT IS ABOUT 90 POUNDS LIGHTER THAN THE ONE IT REPLACES—A PERFECT RECIPE FOR FUN. ICING ON THE CAKE IS THE NEW TRANSMISSION; A SIX-SPEED MANUAL WITH AN OPTIONAL REV-MATCHING FEATURE THAT AUTOMATICALLY BLIPS THE THROTTLE ON DOWNSHIFTS ($3,000.00 OPTION).
THE NEW Z IS VISIBLY WIDER—BY 1.1 INCHES—THAN THE CAR IT REPLACES, WITH INCREASED FRONT AND REAR TRACKS. IT IS 2.7 INCHES SHORTER OVERALL, WITH A WHEELBASE ABBREVIATED BY 3.4 INCHES. ITS DESIGN INCORPORATES THE NOW-FAMILIAR NISSAN BOOMERANG-STYLE HEADLIGHTS AND TAILLIGHTS, AS WELL AS Z-BRANDED SIDE MARKER LIGHTS. THE CANTILEVERED ROOFLINE IS BORROWED FROM BIG BROTHER GT-R. WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION OF 54/46 FRONT/REAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED FROM THE 350Z, AND A NEW DOUBLE-WISHBONE FRONT SUSPENSION DESIGN IS COMPLIMENTED BY A LIGHTER AND STIFFER FOUR-LINK REAR. INSIDE IS A MODERN INTERIOR THAT APPEARS MORE LUXURIOUS THAN THAT OF THE 350Z. SEATS HAVE LARGER BOLSTERS, WHILE THE KNEE PADS HAVE GROWN AS WELL. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FEATURES BIGGER GAUGES, AND THE TRIPLE GAUGE POD ABOVE THE CENTER STACK HAS BEEN RETAINED, HARKENING BACK TO Z CARS OF YORE. AN EXTRUDED ALUMINUM BRACE BEHIND THE SEATS REPLACES THE LARGE STRUT-TOWER BRACE THAT CUT INTO CARGO SPACE ON THE 350Z. NISSAN WILL OFFER THE 370Z IN TWO TRIM LEVELS AT LAUNCH: BASE AND TOURING. STANDARD FEATURES INCLUDE KEYLESS START, AUTOMATIC XENON HEADLIGHTS, AND STABILITY AND TRACTION CONTROL. THE TOURING TRIM ADDS A BETTER STEREO SYSTEM, BLUETOOTH, AND LEATHER-TRIMMED SPORT SEATS, AMONG OTHER FEATURES.

Asian automakers still reluctant to use more aluminum

Tue, Jun 24 2014

There's a logical progression of technology in the auto industry. We've seen it with things like carbon-ceramic brakes, which use to be the sole domain of six-figure sports cars, where they often cost as much as an entry level Toyota Corolla. Now, you can get them on a BMW M3 (they're still pricey, at $8,150). Who knows, maybe in the next four a five years, they'll be available on something like a muscle car or hot hatchback. Aluminum has had a similar progression, although it's further along, moving from the realm of Audi and Jaguar luxury sedans to Ford's most important product, the F-150. With the stuff set to arrive in such a big way on the market, we should logically expect an all-aluminum Toyota Camry or Honda Accord soon, right? Um, wrong. Reuters has a great report on what's keeping Asian manufacturers away from aluminum, and it demonstrates yet another stark philosophical difference between automakers in the east and those in the west. Of course, there's a pricing argument at play. But it's more than just the cost of aluminum sheet (shown above) versus steel. Manufacturing an aluminum car requires extensive retooling of existing factories, not to mention new relationships with suppliers and other logistical and financial nightmares. Factor that in with what Reuters calls Asian automaker's preference towards "evolutionary upgrades," and the case for an all-aluminum Accord is a difficult one. Instead, manufacturers in the east are focusing on developing even stronger steel as a means of trimming fat, although analysts question how long that practice can continue. Jeff Wang, the automotive sales director for aluminum supplier Novelis, predicts that we'll see a bump in aluminum usage from Japanese and Korean brands in the next two to three years, and that it will be driven by an influx of aluminum-based vehicles from western automakers into China. Only time will tell if he's proven right. News Source: ReutersImage Credit: Sean Gallup / Getty Images Plants/Manufacturing Honda Hyundai Mazda Nissan Toyota Technology aluminum

This is Nissan's 2014 Detroit Auto Show concept

Tue, 20 Aug 2013

During a media event in Los Angeles today, Nissan flashed a few images of a new concept car that will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January. According to Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer of design and brand management at Nissan, this unnamed concept has a "very strong design signature" and shows "[Nissan's] future design direction."
It's certainly quite sleek, this concept, yet specific elements like the front fascia and taillamps are evolutionary steps from what we're seeing on some of Nissan's newest products. Those rear lamps look like sleeker versions of what the Sentra wears, and that grille appears to be a more stylized version of what the next-generation Rogue has been seen sporting.
As for what, exactly, this concept previews, that's still up in the air, though our best guess is that it hints at a Maxima successor. After all, Nissan did confirm to us that a new Maxima is currently in development, and showing this concept in early 2014 lines up with our predictions that the next-generation sedan should arrive in time for the 2015 model year.

NHTSA urges owners of recalled Takata airbag vehicles to take immediate action

Mon, 20 Oct 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation are taking the unusual step of issuing a followup press release urging owners of certain recalled vehicles "to act immediately" to fix their cars and trucks. The problem in question concerns the repair campaigns for rupturing Takata airbag inflators issued in June and covers a long list of models from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Infiniti, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
While NHSTA doesn't specifically say why the recall is vital in the new release, Toyota's own explanation in its newly announced renotification campaign earlier today sheds some new light on the topic. According to the Japanese automaker, in testing, Takata found a possible link between the rupturing airbag inflators and high humidity. NHTSA is advocating that all owners pursue repairs immediately if they haven't already done so already. This is especially crucial for those drivers especially in Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii because of the humid conditions there.
We don't need to tell you how dangerous an inadvertent airbag deployment could be - even in a stationary vehicle - but adding to the Takata issue is fears that the deployment could lead to shrapnel being sprayed into the cabin.
