I bought this one owner car (I am the second owner) with 18k miles three years ago. Needless to say the car is in exceptional condition for its age - the interior looks and smells new, all electronics work including ABS, AC, adjustable suspension and 4 wheel steering. The body is straight and the red paint is original and shiny.

Given the car's age, my previous experience with a low mileage non-turbo Z, and my intention to use it as a reliable weekend driver, I went ahead and completed all scheduled and preventive maintenance:
- 30k mile service which included timing belt replacement (this is very important on Z's since broken belts lead to the loss of an engine) and new cam cover gaskets -~$2.5k job
- New Brembo rotors (front) and Hawk pads (front and back) - ~$0.5k
- New fuel lines, fuel filter and fuel dampener (due to heat soak and old age fuel lines have been know to crack in Zs)
- New battery
- New brake master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder (replaced due to the risk of rubber o-rings in the cylinders failing from old age)
- New Eagle F1 tires - $1.2k (less than 300 miles on these)
- Upgraded tension rods with Energy Suspension bushings
- Fluids (transmission oil, brake and and coolant fluids)

While the 300zx was a car ahead of its time when new, I decided to make a couple of upgrades to address a few weak spots and take advantage of the technological progress since the 90's. All upgrades were made using high quality branded parts.

Performance:
- Dual cone intake with Selin electronic translator (allows the ECU to properly read two MAF input signals) - $0.5k
- Stillen charge pipes
- Upsized aluminum Z1 intercoolers - $0.5k
- New 740cc Nismo injectors - (injectors were ~$1k; this is an upgrade vs. 370cc stock injectors; replacement is highly recommended since the original injectors were not designed for modern ethanol-blended fuels and fail over time)
- 2.5in B&B polished stainless steel quad exhaust - $1.2k
- 17in Senca wheels (in my view these work better vs. 18in since there is no need to lower the car and ruin the ride quality); The wheels have the perfect offset for the Z (no spacers needed) and were made in Japan by Kosei - $1.2k
- Upgraded ECU
- Stillen anti-sway bars (front and back) - improves handling - $0.4k

Convenience / Appearance
- Upgraded stereo system with new head unit equipped with iPod and Bluetooth (Cell Phone) connectivity; Speakers were upgraded at the same time, but BOSE enclosures were retained, preserving the nice bass balance.
- OEM Japanese-market taillights
- OEM Japanese-market nose panel with the Z logo

The car was never raced or abused. I used it mostly for weekend getaways. It is fast, but manageable and handles nicely - tight and controllable. I have the owners manual, three keys (including the titanium key), a copy of the old title as well as receipts from oil changes showing mileage. In addition, I have receipts for maintenance work / upgrades. I also have a CarFax report showing the history prior to my ownership.

Carlos Ghosn was on verge of release — so prosecutors file new allegation

Fri, Dec 21 2018

TOKYO — Japanese prosecutors added a new allegation of breach of trust against Nissan's former chairman Carlos Ghosn on Friday, dashing his hopes for posting bail quickly. Ghosn and another former Nissan executive, Greg Kelly, were arrested Nov. 19 and charged with underreporting Ghosn's income by about 5 billion yen ($44 million) in 2011-2015. They also face the prospect of more charges of underreporting Ghosn's income for other years by nearly 10 billion ($80 million) in total. The breach of trust allegations were filed a day after a court rejected prosecutors' request for a longer detention of both men. The new allegation only applies to Ghosn, and Kelly could still be bailed out. A request for bail by Kelly's lawyer is pending court approval, according to the Tokyo District Court, but his release will have to wait until next week since the request was still in process after office hours Friday. Prosecutors in a statement Friday alleged that Ghosn in 2008 transferred a private investment loss worth more than 1.8 billion yen ($16 million) to Nissan by manipulating an unspecified "swap" contract. Ghosn also profited by having the company transfer a total of $14.7 million to another company to benefit himself and that company's owner, who helped in the contract manipulation, prosecutors said. Shin Kukimoto, deputy chief prosecutor at the Tokyo District Prosecutors Office, refuse to say if the two transactions were related or how Ghosn illegally profited. He also declined to identify the collaborator or whether the transactions were made overseas. Ghosn and Kelly are only charged with underreporting Ghosn's pay over five years, in violation of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. They have not been formally charged with an additional allegation of underreporting another 4 billion yen ($36 million) for 2016-2018, for which their first 10-day detention was to expire Thursday. Prosecutors have been criticized for separating the allegations as a tactic to detain Ghosn and Kelly longer. They say Ghosn and Kelly are flight risks. The maximum penalty for violating the financial act is up to 10 years in prison, a 10 million yen ($89,000) fine, or both. Breach of trust also carries a similar maximum penalty. The conviction rate in Japan is more than 99 percent for any crime. Ghosn was sent by Renault in 1999 to turn around Nissan, then on the verge of bankruptcy, and he led its rise to become the world's second-largest automaker.

Half of Chinese car buyers won't shop Japanese over hard feelings

Mon, May 26 2014

The hard feelings between China and Japan is no real secret. Besides modern-day disputes, the two countries have had a long-running enmity that dates back to well before the atrocities of World War II. All things considered, then, it shouldn't be a shock that half of Chinese car buyers wouldn't consider a Japanese car. This survey, conducted by Bernstein Research, found that 51 percent of 40,000 Chinese consumers wouldn't even consider a Japanese car – which, again, isn't really surprising, when you consider stories like this. According to Bernstein, the most troubling thing is the location of these sentiments – smaller, growing cities where the population is going to need sets of wheels. We imagine it wouldn't be as big of an issue in traffic-clogged Shanghai or Beijing, but these small cities are going to become a major focus for automakers. "Nationalistic feelings are an impediment. [Japanese] premium brands will struggle," analyst Max Warburton wrote in a research note, according to The Wall Street Journal. Things will improve for Japanese makes, although China will remain a challenge, with Warburton writing, "the one thing that comes out most clearly is that most Chinese really want a German car. While we expect Japanese brands to continue to recover market share this year, ultimately the market will belong to the Germans." There are a few other insights from the study. According to WSJ, Japanese brands are viewed better than Korean brands, and they're seen as more comfortable than the offerings from Germany or the US, despite the fact that everyone in China apparently wants a German car. This is a tough position for the Japanese makes to be in, as there's really not a lot they can do to win favor with Chinese buyers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, particularly as the importance of the PRC continues to increase year after year. Nissan Kicks concept debuts in Sao Paulo [w/videos]

Tue, 28 Oct 2014

The Sao Paulo Motor Show only comes around once every other year, and Nissan - an automaker deeply vested in the Latin American market - isn't missing out on the opportunity to showcase a new crossover concept.
Called the Kicks concept, the crossover seems to slot in size-wise in between the Juke and the Rogue. Nissan isn't saying much about it, though, aside from its having drawn its inspiration from Brazil with a "satin titanium" finish and bright orange trim - the former taking its cues from Sao Paulo and the latter from Rio.
While emphasizing its Brazilian character, Nissan also stresses that the concept's creation was "a product of global collaboration." So while it isn't saying anything about production feasibility, it is seemingly suggesting that if it were put into production - and as we stated previously, we think it just might - it could stand to be a global model and not confined strictly to South America.
