1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo (aka Z32) (aka Fairlady Z)

Overall, this car is in very nice condition for a 24 year old car. I purchased this car from my good friend 3 years ago as he soon had children and didn't drive it. I am now finding myself in that boat as my wife and I are expecting and she said I better get something with a back seat. The car currently has 131,900 miles on the odometer. My knowledge on the history of this car starts back in 1998 when my friend purchased it. At that time the car came with a salvage title. I'm not exactly sure what happened to it, but I know the car drives straight and there is no unusual wear on the wheels. The car was completely repainted back in 1999 after being keyed. When they stripped the car, the body shop went through it and found nothing majorly wrong. I have bare metal pictures of the car at the body shop (Polaroid's). My friend thought that it was involved in some insurance fraud case, but that's not certain.

The car has the following features:

  • 3.0L VG30DETT V6

  • 5-speed manual transmission

  • White (repainted in 1999)

  • Black leather seats (new leather in early 2000's)

  • Electronic climate control

  • Power windows

  • Power locks (pressure controlled)

  • Power driver's seat

  • Rear windshield wiper

  • Cruise control

  • T-tops - they do not leak when I wash the car in my driveway, that may be another story with a rain storm.

  • Rear wheel steering (HICAS - High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering)

  • TwinZ Design custom spoiler added in 2012

  • Kenwood CD/MP3 player added in 2011

  • 18" ADR Design wheels

  • 235/40 ZR18 BFGoodrich Comp T/A Front

  • 265/35 ZR18 BFGoodrich G-Force T/A Rear

As mentioned above, the interior was redone in early 2000's. The interior used to be black with white inlays. The interior was changed to all black. The seats, door panels, and center console were redone. There are only issues with the door panels as the passenger door has a few bubbles and the driver's door is pealing (see pictures). This could easily be corrected in an upholstery shop. I just haven't had enough interest to fix it as it's not critical to the function of the car.

In early 2000's, my friend rebuild the engine and lowered the compression (for more boost, of course). Upgrades include:

  • Arias pistons

  • Jim Wolf Technology valves and cams

  • Upgraded intercoolers

  • GReddy TD05 turbo kit (costs more than what I'm asking) with external waste gates

  • EGT monitor

  • 720cc injectors with a custom fuel rail for AN fittings

  • Aftermarket fuel filter and regulator with stainless fuel lines

  • Oil preluber/postluber (instead of a turbo timer)

  • A'PEXi  AVC-R (Actuator Valve Controller Type-R) boost controller

  • A'PEXi S-AFC (Super Air Flow Converter)

  • Service Techtom monitor

  • Aftermarket Boost gauge (on A pillar)

  • Dual Exhaust Temp gauge (on A pillar)

  • Kevlar racing clutch

  • HKS HiPower (Hiper) exhaust system

With the upgrades, this car has a lot of power. The car has never been dynoed, but I can assume that the car has somewhere between 450-500 hp based off of similar builds that have been posted online. The car currently has the stock tune and could be retuned for more power. However, for me it runs good enough to make me happy. It does currently run a little rich. Also, I believe the valves will need to be adjusted soon as I'm starting to hear them. Since the rebuild, only Royal Purple full synthetic oil has been used in the engine. The rear differential and transmission currently have Red Line synthetic oil. The car will also come with an assortment of parts including additional stainless lines and AN fittings, extra wiring harness, stock injectors, service cover for the car (covers side fenders and front), FACTORY service manual (aka: the 300ZX bible), timing belt covers (they were removed when the engine was rebuild and never reinstalled), etc. I have most receipts and manuals for the items installed.

These cars have been noticed for their power and beauty. Every year from 1990-1996 (last year imported to the US), this car made the "10 best" list by Car and Driver. In 1990 the car was named Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year," Automobile Magazine named it "Design of the Year," and Road & Track named it "One of the Ten Best Cars in the World." In 2004, Automobile magazine listed the Z32 one of the "100 greatest cars of all time." In 2006, the Z32 was recognized as one of the "20 Greatest Cars of the Past 20 years" and the one of the "25 Most Beautiful Cars in History."

Car is sold "as is." The car runs well and has never left me stranded. It is, however, a 20+ year old car. It should also be noted that the rear key for the hatch does not work, but the hatch can be opened by the hatch lever by the driver's seat. I've tried my best to explain the car, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Nissan should kill the Quest and bring the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 to America

Wed, Oct 12 2016

Enthusiasts don't have much reason to get excited about minivans. But if there were something cool to revitalize interest in the segment, I think American consumers would take notice. A quick browse through Mitsubishi's current catalog of global offerings turned up something interesting, and, now that Nissan has brought the diamond-star into its multi-headed global alliance, the Japanese automaker has a unique opportunity to throw caution to the wind and give America something fun. First, let's acknowledge that the Nissan Quest is a completely reasonable and current minivan entry. But it's not exactly a hot seller. The Quest was the seventh-best-selling minivan in the United States last month. The people-hauler's 209 sales in September of 2016 represent a 68-percent decline over the previous year. Granted, the Quest was trending upward for the year prior to last month's drop, but even the Quest's best full year of sales would just manage to match the number of Toyota Siennas or Chrysler Pacificas sold in a decent month. Put simply, the American market wouldn't miss the Nissan Quest if it were to disappear from dealership lots altogether. I don't think the Nissan Quest is a bad vehicle. The problem is that it's just like every other minivan sold in America. Nothing about the Quest stands out against its competitors, which basically makes it a redundant vehicle with no solid reason to exist. What Nissan really needs, in my humble opinion, is a minivan that stands out from the crowd. I offer the following solution: Bring the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 to the United States. Badge it as a Nissan to take advantage of that brand's larger dealer network; even call it the Quest Q:5 if you must. But don't change much else. I have a feeling Americans would show some interest in an eight-passenger, all-wheel-drive, multi-purpose vehicle like the Delica that's about the same overall length as the Nissan Rogue. As an added incentive to capture as many buyers as possible, offer both the 2.4-liter gasoline engine and the 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that are available in other markets. Since the Delica D:5 is based on the same GS platform as the Dodge Journey, it could probably accommodate a Pentastar V6, too, but that doesn't really seem necessary. Instead of being a powerhouse, the Delica should be about fun and efficiency, with an adventurous off-road streak.

Nissan recalls 3,065 Pathfinders for transmission fluid leak

Thu, 24 Apr 2014

Nissan is recalling 3,065 units of the 2013 Pathfinder equipped with the CVT, due to a potential transmission fluid leak. On crossovers built from April 18, 2012 to October 3,2012 "inadequate clamping force" on the hose connected to the internal oil cooler can cause the hose to come loose and let fluid escape. A severe loss of fluid can cause the transmission to stop working properly.
The recall is the result of a safety investigation begun last September, when it was thought a recall could involve 110,000 units of the Pathfinder and Infiniti JX35. Asked for comment about how such a large number of vehicles potentially involved could end up with just 3,065 being recalled, Nissan rep Steve Yaeger told Autoblog that Nissan initiated a service campaign for the issue last year - a service campaign notifies owners to take their vehicles to the dealer for repair of "what is generally not a safety issue" - and that there was a "production improvement" that addressed the clamping issue. The service campaign included the vehicles being recalled, but the recall is limited to just those vehicles that were built before the production-line fix.
Nissan will begin informing affected owners next month, at which time owners can take their vehicles to dealers to have the hose clamp repaired. The press release below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has more information.

2018 Ford Expedition vs other big SUVs: How it compares on paper

Fri, Nov 10 2017

With our Alex Kierstein rightly impressed in his first-drive review of the new 2018 Ford Expedition, we decided to dig a little deeper into the numbers, and we came up with the spreadsheet below to highlight how the new 2018 Expedition compares on paper to its main full-size SUV competitors: the 2018 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban (and therefore the 2018 GMC Yukon), 2018 Toyota Sequoia and 2018 Nissan Armada. We also threw in the new, even bigger 2018 Chevrolet Traverse since, as you'll see, its massive dimensions should put it on the radar for anyone who needs loads of passenger and cargo space but doesn't care as much about towing. A few notes about the chart above. First, the 6.2-liter V8 that's included with the new-for-2018 Tahoe RST trim level is the standard engine on the GMC Yukon Denali. You can apply most of the Tahoe's numbers to the entire Yukon and Yukon XL lineup. Second, though we highlighted categories where the Traverse led, we also highlighted the runner-up full-size SUV, since this was ultimately about that segment. Traverse numbers are broadly applicable to the new Buick Enclave.
