2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid arrives with supercharged engine, 26 mpg combined

Nissan just launched the fully redesigned Pathfinder for the 2013 model year, and now, there's a fuel-sipping hybrid version making its debut here at the New York Auto Show. The 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid packs all of the same features found in the standard crossover, but offers slightly better fuel economy and an improved cruising range, to boot.
The new hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter supercharged engine (we're assuming it's a four-cylinder, though Nissan hasn't specified) coupled with a lithium-ion battery and 15-kilowatt electric motor, capable of producing 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque - 10 less horsepower but three more pound-feet than the standard V6 Pathfinder. Nissan says the hybrid crossover will be rated at 25/27 miles per gallon (city/highway), with a 26-mpg combined rating. This means that on a full tank, the cruising range of the Pathfinder Hybrid is a cool 526 miles.
What's cool about the hybrid packaging is that Nissan has managed not to have it interfere with any of the interior functionality - the Pathfinder Hybrid still packs just as much cargo and passenger space as its naturally aspirated sibling. Official pricing has not been announced, but Nissan expects the hybrid to command an additional $3,000 over the standard model.

Scientists at Toyota have developed battery technology that allows for higher energy density. Using material from hydrogen storage, researchers at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA) in beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan have created an electrolyte that works well with a magnesium metal anode. Besides improving energy density for smaller, more powerful batteries, magnesium is also more stable than lithium, making it a safer alternative. Rather than guarding their secret, Toyota is sharing details of this breakthrough in order to advance the technology in hopes of an earlier mass deployment of magnesium batteries. The automaker builds two diesel engines – a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter – at its plant in Tremery, France at a rate of 7,000 engines a day. BlueHDi technology uses three different emissions control mechanisms to filter pollutants out of diesel exhaust, including an oxygen catalyst, an additive filter to remove particulate matter, and a Selective Catalytic Reduction system to reduce NOx. Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge to cost over $100,000?

Enthusiasts have been clamoring for Infiniti to build a car like the Q50 Eau Rouge for years. In concept form, it employs the GT-R's much-loved 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, tuned to produce 560 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, with the whole works slid underneath fetching luxury sedan bodywork with carbon fiber aero aids. At this point, the model is rumored to be all but certain for production. The company recently even put Sebastian Vettel in one to show it off. However, Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen is suggesting that the model's lifetime could be brief, limited and rather expensive.
The Infiniti boss recently gave a long interview to Motor Trend that spilled a lot of beans about the Eau Rouge. While he refused to officially admit that the super sedan was on the way, he admits that he's "pushing the Eau Rouge concept for commercialization."
According to de Nysschen, if built, the production version will hew closely to the concept with the engine from the GT-R, but the seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system will come from the Q70.
