for your consideration……...one vintage race rocket.  this is a 1978 nissan (datsun) 280z race rocket.  the true mystique surrounding this car lies in its clouded history.  the car is rumored to have ties with multiple forms of racing, wears nissan factory colors, was state of the art for its time, and the prior owner indicated that it had some ties with the millen organization……….but there is little documentation on the car.  so if you are a super sleuth, perhaps this is your chance to unearth the realites that this car would love to be able to tell us about.  let’s take a step back…….to the beginning.  famous heavy metal guitarist, jack pemma……...from the rock group, white eagle, not only played guitar fast……….but lived in the fast lane……..and drove fast cars.  he had a number of nissan race vehicles, and supposedly had ties to the nissan factory. after his other datsun race vehicles,  jack wanted to build his ultimate z race car…….and this is what was offered here today.  jack was able to race his car before he passed away about 15 years ago.  the car has been sitting in storage ever since.  jack raced the car for centeno/pemma racing, and aerotech racing.  he really spent lots of time, effort and money to make this the ultimate z car.  the car was modified many times and improved over and over.  i spoke to a porsche racing gentleman who stated he ran against the car numerous times.  he said some days his race 911 turbo would take the day, but others, there was no catching jack.  his recounted the car racing at ontario, willow springs, and a number of famous tracks throughout the west coast.  we obtained the car, and have changed little, in order to keep the vintage feel of the car true to the era in which it raced.  we’ve touched up some paint, and replaced the seats, but the rest is just as jack would have wanted it to remain.  the list of improvements is extensive, and frankly, i still don’t know all the upgrades that the car keeps showing us.  the engine is a highly built L28, which was built specifically to take the load of the huge NOS bottle in the back of the car.  so i assume everything inside the engine is forged.  i’ve been told the car had been professionally dyno’d many times, and made impressive power.  hearing and driving the car …….i believe it……..and i don’t have the guts to even squeeze the NOS trigger.  trans was replaced awhile ago, and seems fine, as well as a good rear end.  seems like a tight running and driving car.  we are hoping to take it onto the track, just to sort it out a bit………..but other projects dictate that we have to pass this car on to another lucky owner.  pinned fiberglass hood, lightweight fiberglass fenders and front spoiler.  aero headlight covers, ssr super lightweight 17” wheels, rear spoiler, dual racing harnesses, racing seats, push button start, squeeze triggered from gas pedal, high output fuel pump, performance suspension upgrades, roll cage, side skirts, gutted interior, front and rear strut tower braces and on, and on…….

bottom line……..if you like z’s………..this is the one to have.  it appears to me, that the car was being prepared for an ultimate speed run…….perhaps the copperstate or the like.  the huge NOS bottle was there for sqeezing hard and for a long time.  the paint is beautiful and has only been touched up in places.  the car still wears plenty of battle scars, but is in amazing condition for an original vintage racer of this period.  in addition, although not currently registered, the car was licenced last in california in 1999…………..and was driven on the street !!!   there are no penalties on the car.  sold with lien sale paperwork, but we can also provide a title given time for dmv to process the paperwork.  really a unique opportunity……….and if you do your research and are able to uncover its historical past, you may have an investment on your hands.  non-refundable deposit of $500 is due within 24 hours of auction end.  feel free to come inspect the car prior to the end of the auction.  no inspection after conclusion of the auction, pending receipt of full payment.  we can assist with international shipping.  feel free to ask any questions, and be sure to view the youtube video we have on the car.  happy bidding.

Nissan applies for 'R-Hybrid' trademark, but what is it for?

Wed, 28 Aug 2013

Patent and trademark filings are sort of like tasseography for those of us in the auto industry. If you know where and how to look at something, there's a lot to be figured out. Take this trademark filing from Nissan - it's similar to the Pure Drive badge found on a Versa or Sentra, but the bottom half sports the phrase "R-Hybrid." This wouldn't be remarkable if the "R" in R-Hybrid weren't the same style as the "R" in the Nissan GT-R's badge, right down to the serifs.
While it's easy to see this as grasping at straws, it makes a fair degree of sense. The R35 GT-R may be a dominant performance machine, but it's been around since 2008, which is donkey years in the automotive industry. And based on the recent crop of hybridized hypercars and racecars, a hybrid GT-R doesn't seem like such a stretch.
As Car And Driver points out, figuring out that the GT-R will go hybrid isn't hard - figuring out when it will arrive, is. The buff book rightly points out that a new GT-R isn't expected until 2017, but that designing and trademarking a badge four years ahead of time is a bit odd. Car and Driver speculates that we could see a mildly hybridized R35, although the chances do seem remarkably low. Head over to C/D for a more thorough rundown on why this just might be a GT-R badge, including comparisons with other R-badged Nissans.

Ghosn: 'While I'm proud of our EV leadership, I know it's not enough.'

Thu, Dec 17 2015

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has written something like a State of the Union on electric vehicles and the carbon economy. We'd sum it up as, 'we're working on it but we all need to work harder.' Ghosn believes all of the commitments made at the Paris COP21 climate change conference are a start, but "the support of the business community is imperative," in coordination with the public sector. He stresses that he's after an "orderly transition," one that uses what we have now in order to go where many believe we need to go. That means no threats or revolution, no "aggressive government intervention and centralized demand and control," but rather a "practical, affordable way to begin reducing dependence" on the fuel that turns the skies brown. Ghosn wraps up his manifesto this way: "The UN Secretary General recently said that we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last to be able to do anything to stop it. This is a call to action, and the auto industry is committed to doing its part." Based on the undeniable shift toward the electrification of the automobile, we know that the call is being answered. Given the limited market share EVs have today, it could still use some more people and companies picking up the phone. With vehicle numbers expected to grow from 800 million to more than two billion by 2050, "transition will occur one way or another," Ghosn writes. Head over to Forbes to read Ghosn's thoughts.

Ghosn predicts autonomous cars on the roads by 2018, if laws allow

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Things appear to be going well inside Nissan's autonomous vehicle development program. Until now, the automaker believed that self-driving cars would be ready for major markets like the US by 2020. However, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is now speeding up that prediction to 2018 in some places, assuming that local laws are ready to accept the computer-controlled vehicles.
"The problem isn't technology, it's legislation, and the whole question of responsibility that goes with these cars moving around," said Ghosn in a speech in France recorded by Reuters. He predicted that the first sales could begin in France, Japan and the US by 2018 and expand elsewhere in 2020.
The alliance has been among the forefront of automakers working on self-driving cars. Nissan has an autonomous Leaf (pictured above) test car that is licensed to drive on Japanese roads. Renault showed off an version of its Zoe EV earlier this year called the Next Two, that could pilot itself at speeds up to 18 miles per hour, and that the company predicted would be ready by 2020.
