Hi guys. For sale in the SoCal/LA area is a '93 Sileighty. 241,720 miles on the chassis, but that's almost the only thing left that's original. This car has an SR20DET. The engine has ~30k miles since I got it, and has been rebuilt once in that time (blown head gasket; sigh). I've had the car since 2005 and have gone through it from the ground up. It was built to be a comfortable, fly-under-the-radar daily driver and an awesome handling weekend track car. It was built by former Sport Compact Car engineering editor Dave Coleman and myself, using the original SCC Project Silvia as performance inspiration. Read about a bunch of the technical details in Dave Coleman's MotoIQ series about the car.

Minor downers
Though it looks awesome, it still is a 21-year-old driven car, so...
It is very cold blooded and needs to be warmed up a couple minutes before it has good throttle response. This is a detail we missed when tuning at JWT, because we did everything with the engine hot. Just needs a little bit of simple diagnostic work with the engine cold (to identify if it is an ignition or fuel tuning issue)
Two tiny door dings
Some small paint chips from daily driving
A few light scrapes and scratches
Weird half-dollar-sized flaw in the clear coat on the hood - couldn't get it to show up in the photo
Front bumper is spiderwebbed/chipped from a very low speed incident
Very light curb rash on 3 wheels
Half of the LED dash lights have gone flaky. Sometimes they work, sometimes no. Probably a bad ground
3 of the speakers are flaky, probably a bad ground
Wrinkle-coat paint on the valve cover is flaking off
Horn isn't working
Plastic trim on driver seat recline lever is broken off, but metal lever still works

Buyers from US and Canada welcome. Buyer to arrange pickup and/or shipping.

Nissan Qashqai caught looking sleek

Wed, 03 Jul 2013

The next-generation of the not-for-US-consumption Nissan Qashqai has been out doing some testing in southern Europe this week. And, if the dressed-in-trash-bags look is any indication, it's been doing a lot of roadwork so it can make weight for the big meet the weekend.
Nissan designers haven't been scared to take big design chances with recent new models, so expectations are that the Qashqai crossover will get a bold new visage for its generational changeover. What we see in these photos indicates a sleeker, slightly trimmer CUV however, with no trace of the bug-eyed look we captured recently on a testing Titan.
In the rest of the world, it's a good bet that the Qashqai will be powered by engines ranging from a 1.2-liter turbo up to a 1.6-liter forced-induction unit; that larger one good for something like 215 horsepower. Diesel powerplants will be in the mix, too, for the compact CUV, and word is that Nismo might get its hands on this Rogue cousin for the first time ever.

Watch this 800-hp Nissan Juke-R savage the 'Ring

Fri, 29 Aug 2014

The concept of the 545-horsepower Nissan Juke-R that stuffs the drivetrain of a GT-R into a subcompact crossover is already insane, but Russian company Shpilli Villi Engineering has taken things even further with their own crazy riff on the idea. Its version tunes the engine up to a claimed 800 horsepower, plus a shot of nitrous for an extra 200 hp to put it (way) over the top. Naturally, a number of other upgrades have been exacted in an effort to try and keep the custom Juke's shiny side up and the driveline internals from spontaneously rearranging themselves. Those changes include a beefed-up switchable all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive layout and revised suspension.
Last year, you may recall that we saw an earlier version of Shpilli Villi Engineering's insanity testing with a mere 700 hp in a one-mile, standing drag race against a Bugatti Veyron. In that state of tune, the Juke-R lost, but by less than a hundredth of a second. Now, owner and racer Vladimir Ulanov has brought his madness to the Nürburgring Nordschleife to see how it does around a damp lap of the famous track.
It looks like 800 hp and a moist track might be almost too much for this Juke to handle, because Ulanov gets very loose at several points during the lap. Understandably, his passenger seems suitably impressed and possibly a little freaked out at the end. See what you think of this craziness by watching the video.

Chevy Volt sales drop in June, Nissan Leaf inches upwards

Tue, Jul 1 2014

Different month, same story. That's the gist of the monthly US sales numbers from the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. These were the first two mass-market plug-in vehicles to go on sale in the US and we've been comparing their sales numbers for what seems like ages now. So far, the 2014 tale of the tape shows the all-electric once again trumping the plug-in hybrid. The last time the Volt outsold the Leaf was in October 2013. Chevrolet sold 1,777 Volts in June. That was good enough to be the Volt's best sales month of the year, but it's down 34 percent from the 2,698 units sold in June 2013. In fact, it's on par with the 1,760 Volts sold in June 2012. Given the steady sales, General Motors might need to push up the release of the next-gen Volt to gin up excitement, especially if it also offers some of the things that current Volt drivers say they want improved: more range, a lower price and a fifth seat. GM also said it sold 85 Spark EVs in June, an increase of 215 percent over June 2013 Nissan sold 2,347 Leafs last month. The good news continues for Nissan, which says it sold 2,347 Leafs last month. That's an increase of 5.5 percent over 2013 numbers and makes 2014 the best June ever for Leaf sales. Let's credit Texas. Toby Perry, Nissan's director of EV sales and marketing, said in a statement that, "Since the Texas state incentive went into effect in May, we've seen a big jump in Leaf sales in the Austin, Dallas and Houston markets. Our dealers are telling us that they saw more traffic in their stores, and they had their best Leaf sales performance in the last weekend in June." Even with that increase, Atlanta remains the top Leaf market. Nissan has sold 12,736 Leafs in the US so far this year; Chevy 8,615 Volts. Our detailed monthly sales write-up of green cars in the US, including plug-in vehicles, hybrids and diesel cars, is coming soon. For now, we invite you to discuss these numbers in the Comments.
