The last Mitsubishi Evolution in the US sold for $76,400

UPDATE: The final Mitsubishi Evolution, Final Edition number 1,600, sold at auction for $76,400. The proceeds will go straight to Feeding America Riverside | San Bernardino and Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County in celebration of Hunger Action Month. While we're sad to see the Lancer Evolution disappear, we're at least glad to see that the last one on our shores will do some good for those in need. Mitsubishi announced that the very last Lancer Evo X Final Edition for the US, number 1,600, will be auctioned on eBay for charity. The auction starts tomorrow at 9 am Pacific time and runs until Thursday, September 15 at 9 am. Considering the car's collectability and auction availability, the last Evo will probably go for well above MSRP, but that's a good thing. All of the proceeds will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank in Orange County and Feeding America in Riverside and San Bernardino, so the higher that bidding reaches for this particular car, the better. Aside from the charitable and collectible reasons, the Final Edition Evo is also the best version of the classic sport compact Mitsubishi has built. It has an extra 12 horsepower over standard and comes with the five-speed manual transmission. Plus it gets upgraded Bilstein shocks, Eibach springs and Brembo brakes. Mitsubishi teases new compact crossover that could be called Eclipse

Does the world need another compact crossover? No, not really. But Mitsubishi could certainly use another vehicle in the hottest segment in America. And the Japanese automaker is about to show off a brand-new model at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show that will slot between the Outlander Sport and the larger Outlander. Rumors suggest that this new compact crossover might revive a well-known name from the past: Eclipse. While that's undeniably better than a random series of numbers or letters, or another riff on the Outlander moniker, Mitsubishi would surely alienate some of its hardcore fans by christening a CUV with the name of an old sport coupe. Here's hoping those rumors stay exactly that. Moving past the potentially controversial name, what we're looking at is a pretty conventional coupe-like two-box shape. The sloping roofline looks current, and the steeply raked rear glass adds a sporty flare. We've got a little over a month before we see the new 'ute in all its glory, and probably about a year before it's in US showrooms. Mitsubishi admits it lied about MPG ratings for all vehicles in Japan

Like the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal, news about Mitsubishi's lies over fuel-economy ratings for its Japanese market vehicles is going from bad to worse. First, it was just a few kei cars. Then it was vehicles made as far back as 1991. Now Mitsubishi has admitted deceptive mileage test data could affect every vehicle it has sold in Japan, but not vehicles sold elsewhere. We suspect that this will not cause the EPA to relax its request for more information from the Japanese automaker to see if any vehicles sold in the US are affected. Mitsubishi Motors North America has said its US numbers are legit. In a letter to the Japanese government, Mitsubishi said that even though its managers knew getting good fuel economy ratings was a difficult task, they didn't ask too many questions of the engineers actually doing the tests. That allowed those employees to fake some of the numbers. Exactly what the repercussions will be in Japan is not known, CBS News says, both in terms of fines or penalties and how to compensate people who bought these vehicles. Reports are also just coming in that the fuel scandal might lead to Nissan taking control of Mitsubishi. More on this as it develops.
