I am commissioning in the Army in May and need to have a more utilitarian vehicle that can take me cross-country along with a lot of my personal belongings. I bought this car in May, 2010 while working as the Used Car Manager at a local dealership. I knew from the moment I saw it that I had to have this car. Ever since high school these machines have fascinated me. Beginning in the early 1990s, Diamond Star Motors (DSM) began producing a car that was available from three different brands: Mitsubishi, Eagle, and Plymouth. The respective models were the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and the Plymouth Laser. They all came in front wheel drive and all wheel drive layouts, manual or automatic, and turbo or non-turbo. By far the rarest of these was the Plymouth Laser AWD Turbo. Not many were made and production was actually halted mid way through the 1994 production year. Costing over $16,000 new in 1992, they were the hot ticket for those looking for a thrill. In the years to come they began showing up in the used car market and for a relatively small amount you could have the platform for a great, FAST, weekend warrior! When I purchased the car, I became the third owner at 57,042 miles. VERY LOW ORIGINAL MILES! The owners before me were an older couple. The wife had driven it for a while then got tired of the manual transmission. The husband then drove it on the weekends until they decided to sell it. All of these miles are original and there is no indication of any rollback whatsoever. When I purchased the car it was in very good cosmetic shape but had a few mechanical issues. All 1st generation DSMs were notorious for leaking capacitors within the ECUs. This is exactly what happened with my car. After this repair ($78) it ran like new. This Laser has lived the majority of its life under a carport and it shows. The exterior of this car is an 9 out of 10, especially for DSM standards. There are knicks and dings from normal driving, however, this is to be expected from any 22-year-old car! Paint on the door mirrors is beginning to fade due to them being plastic. There is only one mark on the car from any kind of "accident." Just behind the left-rear wheel there is a quarter sized scrape from me backing into a curved retaining wall. Needless to say I was furious at myself. See pictures for more detail. The interior of the car is also a 9 out of 10. The carpet and front seats are very, very clean with no holes or significant stains. The rear seat is immaculate and appears to have never been used. The steering wheel retains its leather wrapping and has no discoloration or tears. I redid the headliner with a heavier vinyl when I bought the car. It still looks very good. The only real issue in the cabin is the dash pad. Due to age and probably heat, it has begun to peel up on the passenger side. This would likely be an easy repair for a professional. See pictures for details. This car is currently about $500 away from making a consistent and reliable 300HP. All that needs to be done is to install an EVO 8 MAF and have it retuned. The car runs perfectly now, but is not at its full power potential. Estimated power levels as the car stands now is probably around 200-215 awhp. EVERYTHING ON THIS CAR WORKS!!! Cruise control Headlights Brake lights Fog lights Interior lights Trunk lights Signal Indicators Radio Rear windshield wiper Front windshield wiper Front and rear washers Rear defrost Power windows Power locks Seatbelts Emergency brake Horn Emergency flashers Glove box Sunroof Air conditioning and heat Dash dimmer switch This car has been tastefully modified. Some things I upgraded along the way as some parts grew old and needed replacing, others I did in pursuit of increased performance. None of the modifications I have done scream ricer, or high school rat rod. Even the exhaust is 2.5" with a Magnaflow muffler to keep the noise down (hardly any droning either, which is nice). It should be noted that I live in a non-emissions test county thus the car does not currently have a catalytic converter installed. There is a test pipe bolted in currently and it is an easy swap to have a converter installed. Mitsubishi Mirage bows in Montreal without a name, Canadian sales promised
Sun, 20 Jan 2013The Detroit Auto Show had plenty of major debuts for North American car buyers, but the Montreal Auto Show is being used for the North American debut of a new subcompact hatchback from Mitsubishi. Although this car is unnamed, it is almost identical to the redesigned Mirage we saw back at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show (and has been on sale in Asian markets such as Thailand since last year), but it is unclear if the car will carry this name when it goes on sale for our neighbors to the north starting this fall.
Aside from a slightly less annoying shade the of green we saw the car painted in at the Tokyo show, there are a few changes made for the car's Canadian debut. The biggest difference is that it is almost three inches longer, which is likely a result of the new rear fascia that is also visually different with some altered lines and small, circular reflectors. Other changes include a bigger three-cylinder engine (with a 1.2-liter displacement instead of the Tokyo car's 1.0-liter engine) and headlights that have new amber lenses for side reflectors.
There is still no word as to whether or not we'll see this new car in Mitsubishi's US lineup anytime soon, but it does seem like a good competitor against cars like that Mazda2, Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai Accent.
2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross arrives in the U.S., pricing starts at $24,290
Thu, Feb 22 2018The first shipment of the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has arrived in the United States. Mitsubishi's new all-wheel drive compact crossover will go on sale in showrooms in early March with a starting price of $24,290, including a destination charge of $995. The Eclipse Cross debuted last year at the Geneva Motor Show with design cues borrowed from the XR-PHEV II Concept from 2015. The exterior design, which Mitsubishi says is inspired by a runner in the "Get set" position, includes a forward-raked rear window, wedge profile and deep side crease. Its starting price slots it just below competitors like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson, and it will come in four trim levels. Those include the base ES, which is the only trim available with front-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive, or S-AWC in Mitsubishi speak, adds only $600 to the base price. The LE S-AWC trim starts at $25,890 and the range-topping SE S-AWC starts at $27,390, though neither are eligible for options, so those are pretty much the prices customers will be dealing with. All trim levels are powered by a direct-injection turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four that makes 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The S-AWC acronym would stand for Super All-Wheel Control, Mitsubishi's system that manages torque supplied to each wheel for added straight-line stability and cornering performance. It offers three selectable driving modes — auto, snow and gravel — to enhance performance. Safety technology includes blind-spot warning and lane-change assist, forward collision mitigation and lane-departure warning, plus a system that automatically adjusts headlight brightness to the conditions. Interior features include an available 7-inch infotainment display with a touchpad controller, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus voice recognition via Google Assistant or Siri. There's also a full-color LCD head-up display available. A dual-pane sunroof and heated rear seats are some of the other niceties. The Eclipse Cross joins the brand's stable of crossovers, the Outlander and slightly smaller Outlander Sport, which helped Mitsubishi to a banner year in 2017, selling more than 100,000 vehicles for the first time in a decade. It also joins the Outlander PHEV, also new for 2018. Related Video:
Question of the Day: Most heinous act of badge engineering?
Wed, Dec 30 2015Badge engineering, in which one company slaps its emblems on another company's product and sells it, has a long history in the automotive industry. When Sears wanted to sell cars, a deal was made with Kaiser-Frazer and the Sears Allstate was born. Iranians wanted new cars in the 1960s, and the Rootes Group was happy to offer Hillman Hunters for sale as Iran Khodro Paykans. Sometimes, though, certain badge-engineered vehicles made sense only in the 26th hour of negotiations between companies. The Suzuki Equator, say, which was a puzzling rebadge job of the Nissan Frontier. How did that happen? My personal favorite what-the-heck-were-they-thinking example of badge engineering is the 1971-1973 Plymouth Cricket. Chrysler Europe, through its ownership of the Rootes Group, was able to ship over Hillman Avanger subcompacts for sale in the US market. This would have made sense... if Chrysler hadn't already been selling rebadged Mitsubishi Colt Galants (as Dodge Colts) and Simca 1100s as (Simca 1204s) in its American showrooms. Few bought the Cricket, despite its cheery ad campaign. So, what's the badge-engineered car you find most confounding?
