Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution's curtain call will come with more power

We love the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, but by this point, we've accepted the fact that the its days are numbered, despite the noticeable back and forth that accompanied rumors of the vehicle's future for so many months and years. And while the Evo's coming death in 2015 is pretty sad, a report from Automotive News claims that the road-going rally machine will at least be leaving with a fairly substantial bang.
According to AN, Mitsubishi will send off the Evo with a Special Action Model. Limited to between 2,000 to 2,500 units and destined exclusively for the United States, the Evo X SAM should boast, most notably, a bump in power for its 291-pony, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder. There should be a few other performance tweaks to accompany the increased output, although it's unclear what those might be. AN claims the limited-edition model will drop during the last six months of Evo production, some time next year.
AN's report was confirmed to us by Mitsubishi spokesman Alex Fedorak, who said that, yes, there will be "a US special edition in 2015." We've asked for additional information, but all we've heard back, so far, is that mum's the word. Here's hoping we won't be waiting too long to get official details.

Pristine, time-traveling 2006 Mitsubishi Evo sells for $138K

Remember that never-sold 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution we told you about last week? The one with 9 miles on the odometer, its seats wrapped in plastic and never titled? And that had already earned a bid of $100,100 on eBay? Well, that Evo has now sold for a hair under $138,000, Road and Track reports. That's $100,000 over its original sticker price of $37,094. The seller was South Coast Mitsubishi in Orange County, Calif., which one Reddit user claims has stockpiled multiple Evos and sold them off at a premium. This high-fetching Evolution is an IX MR model in Graphite Gray with black trim, a six-speed manual, all-wheel-drive transmission. It's optioned with the MR package that includes some aluminum and carbon-fiber bits and boost-gauge kit, plus the Zero Lift aero kit. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter, 16-valve inline four-cylinder, 286 horsepower engine with 289 pound-feet of torque. It can do 0-to-60 in 4.4 seconds. The car's production run ended with the 2015 model year. The car fielded a total of 80 bids, which started at $30,000. 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

This could have been something great. Last fall, Mitsubishi slapped its triple-diamond badge on a dainty little hatchback called Mirage, offering plenty of functionality and 44 miles per gallon on the highway, all starting at a super-low $12,995. For budget shoppers, this seemed to be a good thing - not to mention a much-needed breath of fresh air for the company's waning US automotive arm.
I will fully admit to being a bit harsh on the Mirage following its debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show, often making it the butt of jokes with my colleagues. But at the end of the day, I love cheap, basic, honest little cars like this, and I wasn't prepared to write off the Mirage until I spent some time behind the wheel. After all, on paper, a Mazda2 looks pretty unremarkable, and yet it's one of my favorite small cars to drive.
Much as I wasn't looking forward to putting my foot in my mouth, I was sort of hoping to feel the same way about the new Mirage. It's a bland package, but it could have been filled with the same spunky spirit and well-meaning composure of vehicles like the aforementioned Mazda, or even stuff like the Honda Fit or Chevy Spark and Sonic.
