Mitsubishi HQ raided by the Japanese government

Mitsubishi's fuel economy scandal continues to grow, and the Japanese government wants answers. According to Reuters, the Japanese Transport Ministry raided the company's headquarters and a factory in Nagoya today. This raid comes soon after the company revealed that a number of its SUVs were also being sold with incorrect fuel economy ratings. The Japanese government issued a stop-sale on those vehicles a few days ago. This raid also follows an internal investigation conducted by Mitsubishi to discover how this fuel economy scandal happened, and how the practices that led to it were able to continue for 25 years. The internal investigation revealed a few contributing factors that all fell under issues with the company's culture. There was significant pressure throughout the company to reach fuel economy targets and missing them wasn't readily accepted. Questioning decisions of management was also discouraged, and it seemed the different divisions of the company weren't working well together. The findings of this raid have yet to be revealed, but it will be interesting to see how they compare with those of the internal investigation. The Japanese Transport Ministry seems intent on preventing a repeat of this with another company considering that, according to Reuters, it "sent documents to other automakers to enforce compliance with rules for calculating mileage ." Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Final Edition gets official for Japan only

It'll be the end of an era when Mitsubishi discontinues the Lancer Evolution, putting to rest a dynasty that challenged the Subauru WRX STI for decades. But before it does, the Diamond-Star automaker is sending off its most celebrated model with the Final Edition you see here. Unfortunately, it's nowhere near as cool as the concept. While the showcar pumped the output from its 2.0-liter turbo four to 473 horsepower thanks to a remapped ECU and a fresh HKS turbocharger, the production version is sticking with the stock 296 hp. It's otherwise based on the GSR model, so it's got a five-speed gearbox, but packs a long list of top-shelf equipment: BBS alloys, Bilstein shocks, Eibach springs, Brembo brakes, Recaro seats... the works. Mitsubishi will only offer 1,000 examples of the Evo X Final Edition in Japan, where buyers will be able to choose between five exterior colors and a contrasting roof in black or white. We don't know at this point whether a similar special will be offered Stateside, but if it is, we hope it'll pack at least some of the concept's power upgrades (we can dream, right?).

Nissan's plan to supply US Mitsubishi dealers with family sedan stalls

Mitsubishi has quietly had some big success recently. The Japanese brand sold 77,643 vehicles in the US for all of 2014, a 24.8 percent jump over 2013. While still relatively small overall (Ford sold 74,355 F-Series trucks just in December, for example), it shows definite growth for the sometimes forgotten automaker. Unfortunately, the latest news might not help the company's future expansion. The proposed partnership of Mitsubishi and the Renault-Nissan Alliance on at least one midsize sedan for the US market is off the table, according to Automotive News. The company informed sellers that the collaboration had fallen through during a National Automobile Dealers Association meeting. "I told them that the plan has stalled," said Don Swearingen, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, to Automotive News. "And I said that's really all I can tell you at this time." Under the original partnership, Mitsubishi was supposed to get a D-segment sedan that would have been built at the Renault-Samsung factory in Busan, South Korea. The automakers were also negotiating for Mitsu to get a C-segment four-door as a global model and developing an electric kei car for Japan together, due in 2016. While the sedan is gone, Mitsubishi isn't completely bereft of improved products in the pipeline. The Mirage Sedan is being launched in the US, and the Outlander is supposed to get a redesign for the 2016 model year. According to Automotive News, the Outlander Sport and Lancer are also due for refreshes in 2016, and a new Mirage is on the way.
