1,400 Mitsubishi vehicles lost in shipping tragedy

A cargo ship carrying 1,400 Mitsubishi vehicles from Japan and Thailand collided with another vessel off the coast of Belgium and the Netherlands yesterday. The 485-foot Baltic Ace was carrying cars from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Kotka, Finland when it collided with the 439-foot Corvus J. While the Corvus J sustained damage during the incident, it is not in danger of sinking, and its 12-man crew is currently still on board.
The Baltic Ace, meanwhile, went under. Three ships from the Royal Dutch Sea Rescue Organization, two navy vessels, four helicopters and one coastguard aircraft spent the evening searching for survivors, but rough seas and high winds hampered the effort. Eighteen of the Baltic Ace's crew, including the captain, were rescued after being found in life rafts, but six remain missing. The search for survivors has officially been called off.
The collision occurred in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North Sea, and the managers behind the Baltic Ace said they believed human error was to blame for the incident. Dutch police are currently looking into whether or not they can investigate the sinking despite the fact that the collision took place outside of the country's territorial waters.

Mitsubishi to showcase eX crossover concept in Tokyo

The Tokyo Motor Show is coming up at the end of the month, and Mitsubishi isn't about to sit it out. That's where the Diamond Star automaker will unveil the eX Concept pictured here. The electric crossover concept packs what the company terms as a "next-generation EV system" into what looks at first blush like a rather dramatic design. Mitsubishi is telling us next to nothing about the eX and its specifications. However, it indicates that the concept incorporates an all-electric powertrain, all-wheel drive, an automated driving system, vehicle connectivity, and active safety systems. The automaker has also only revealed the one rendering above, but it bears all the hallmarks of a modern Mitsubishi concept like the ones we've seen in recent years. That includes the company's signature Diamond Shield front grille, flanked by narrow, angular headlights and oversized running lamps. Naturally, this concept rides on oversized wheels and boasts spindly little mirrors, all in an effort to tell us this is a bonafide show car and not a pre-production prototype. NHTSA begins inquiry into Mitsubishi fuel economy

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to make sure Mitsubishi doesn't falsify fuel economy ratings in the US like the company does in Japan. "We've requested information from Mitsubishi about this issue," a NHTSA spokesperson told Reuters. The person didn't provide details about the specific models the regulator wanted to know more about. At this time, there's no evidence of fuel economy inaccuracies for any North American models. The affected vehicles in Japan so far are 625,000 small kei-class cars, including the Mitsubishi eK, eK Space, Nissan Dayz, and Dayz Roox, which Mitsu produces for Nissan. However, Japanese regulators are taking a closer look at other models and gave the company a week to hand over test data. A newspaper there claims Mitsubishi allegedly used "non-Japanese test methodology" on the RVR, Outlander, Pajero, and Minicab MiEV. NHTSA's look into Mitsubishi comes at the same time the Department of Justice is scrutinizing Daimler for possible emissions anomalies. "Daimler will consequently investigate possible indications of irregularities and of course take all necessary action," the German automaker said in a statement. The company asserts the DOJ's inquiry is unrelated to a lawsuit from owners, which alleges the BlueTec emissions control system is designed to turn off at low temperatures. Related Video:
