2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, LOW MILES! 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback
LOW MILES, Made in Japan reliability - needs NOTHING! See full description below.

I’ve never wrote an ad for a car before. Oh, I’ve done plenty of ads for guitar parts on ebay, but not cars. It seems I’ll have to write one for the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, since it’s so rare most folks have never seen one, much less know anything about it. Apparently Mitsubishi only imported this model for one year, and never even promoted it. So, here goes my ad….

It was in 2005 when I purchased my Lancer Sportback LS. It came with a $1000 option package of alloy wheels, Cruise control, cargo area cover, roof rack, and pinstriping. The standard Sportback (LS) comes with an automatic transmission, Power door locks, mirrors & windows, A/C, CD/radio stereo, tilt wheel, and strong 4-wheel disk brakes. So, this is a well-equipped car. I've been very happy with the Sportback. Not only is it 100% reliable, it is VERY quick (definitely faster than the 8.5 sec. 0-60 time its supposed to have). This is no doubt due to the 160HP MIVEC 4-cylinder engine the Sportback has - the 2004 Lancer sedans only had a 120HP engine. The 160HP engine (33% more power) makes a big difference in a car of this size. Passing speed on the highway is excellent, and lane-change maneuvers are reminiscent of the Mitsubishi Evo (which is based on the same chassis). The disc brakes stop on a dime, with zero fade. Maybe all that great performance doesn't mean much to some buyers, but I'm sure we all agree: faster is better than slower, and cars that handle emergency maneuvers better and stop faster are safer.

My wagon (which is the Sportback LS, not the Ralliart) handles great, yet rides well. It’s comfortable, if not luxurious. The 4-speed automatic transmission is very smooth, and doesn’t sap as much power as the auto. did in my old Honda. Due to its fairly tall roof height, flat load floor, and square back end, you can fit a LOT of stuff in the cargo area – more than most SUVs! The split rear seat lets you carry even more, even with 3 passengers. You can carry 8’ long boards or poles without a hitch. What’s amazing is that, due to the engine’s power (and the GREAT 4-wheel disc brakes) even a heavy, full load doesn’t faze the Sportback.

Of course, being Made in Japan means this car is rock solid reliable. The only problem I’ve had was when the “check engine” light came on once for an unknown reason many years ago. The dealer reset it and I was on my way in 2 minutes.

I like the appearance of the Lancer wagon too. People mistake it for a Ford Focus from the front, or a Volvo from the rear. I’ve received compliments over its looks, which I didn’t expect. It has a few, very minor dings in the body, and scratches in the rear bumper from loading music equipment into it, but no major dents. There is a small stain on the roof on the driver’s side, which I have been unable to remove, caused by tree sap (I think). Otherwise the paint is in great shape. The only other flaw to the exterior is a part of the lower right taillight that was cracked and glued back together. There are no rips or stains in the interior. See the many large pictures of my Sportback at this link.

Maintained well, my Sportback needs nothing, and won’t need any expensive maintenance for a LONG time. At the date, I’m writing this it still only has just under 61,000 miles on it (I have a VERY short commute!) There are only 5000 miles on the new Dunlop tires. The rear brake discs were replaced 3 years ago or so, and the front brakes are still good. It had the big 5-year/60,000 mile service in July, 2011, which included a timing belt change. Otherwise, it’s just been oil changes and tire rotation. I have receipts for most of the work done. The car burns zero oil. Every device in the car works as well as new. The Sportback just passed NJ State Inspection. It has never been in any kind of an accident. I am a non-smoker, so there are no funky odors. The front seats had covers on them for most of their lives, so they have very little wear.

If you are looking for an affordable, used compact wagon there are very few choices nowadays. The later (2012-2014) Lancer Sportback is a completely different animal, and doesn’t have the room or the performance of this Sportback. The other competition in its price range (the Ford Focus or the Hyundai) is much slower, with mediocre brakes and iffy reliability. You could pay more for the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV, but they would be slower too, and certainly don’t handle or brake nearly as well as the Sportback. Compare and you will see that the Sportback is an excellent value.

TERMS: Cash or bank cashier’s check only. Feel free to make me a reasonable offer. I will NOT ship the Sportback, although you can feel free to arrange your own shipping for it after payment has arrived. Yes, you can test drive it before buying but it may not be registered in a week or two, so get here soon or you will have to settle for just a drive around my neighborhood. Scam emails, ridiculous lowball offers, and “is it still available” mails will be ignored – if you see this ad online it is still available! My Sportback is sold “as-is” with no warranty, although it undoubtedly has PLENTY of life left in it.

Well, that’s it for my ad. I think I’ve covered everything, but if not feel free to write me with questions. I can accept texts (from serious buyers only) on my iphone at 9084330769. For independent reviews of the Lancer Sportback, click here and here.

Thanks for looking!

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S shows what a facelift can do [w/video]

Fri, 03 Oct 2014

Sometimes you need a second chance to get things right. Technologically, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a pretty cool vehicle, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and additional electric motors providing more thrust. However, the CUV never really looked the part for all of its innovation. The Mitsubishi designers are taking another crack with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Concept-S at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and the vehicle shows what a massive improvement some tweaks can make.
The most obvious of these changes is the completely different front end with a more vertical design. The headlights are reshaped with LED running lights outlining them, and the new airdam that puts a massive X right on the front grille in black and chrome with some more LEDs down below. The designers don't stop there and have a major revision to the rear with taillights running all the way across. Inside, there's black wood grain trim and leather seats.
The update takes the CUV from boring to somewhat exciting, and the even better news is that some of these updates might make it to a rumored refresh in 2016 that could even come here. Scroll down to watch Mitsubishi's teaser video for the Concept-S with more views of it and the company's full press release.

Mitsubishi previews diesel hybrid pickup concept, next-gen EV for Geneva

Wed, 13 Feb 2013

Mitsubishi has a long history of tidy little pickup trucks, and the Japanese automaker is apparently looking to extend that heritage in a bolder, bigger way with the Concept GR-HEV, a "sport utility hybrid truck."
The future-think show star, slated to be unveiled at next month's Geneva Motor Show, is actually tipped to be a much larger effort - Mitsubishi says it's applying its hybrid technology to a one-ton truck for the first time. The GR-HEV is powered by a complex powertrain composed of a diesel engine and electric motors, which the company believes is better suited to the sort of heavy-duty work required in the segment. The concept also employs full-time four-wheel drive and a development of Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control system (which governs things like stability and brake force control along with an active center differential) as seen on the production Lancer Evolution.
In related news, Mitsubishi has also confirmed that it will show a next-generation electric showcar at Geneva dubbed Concept CA-MiEV. With this new concept (inset photo), the company says it is looking to build on the learnings of its i citycar and take EVs out of their limited urban roles. To that end, the CA-MiEV boasts "next generation EV systems and high density batteries" that give it a range of 186 miles.

Carlos Ghosn's jail time extended, as family says he was framed

Mon, Dec 31 2018

TOKYO — Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn will be detained at least through Jan. 11, the Tokyo District Court said Monday, as the once-revered auto industry figure faces allegations that have marked a stunning downfall. Ghosn, who led Nissan Motor Co. for two decades and helped save the Japanese automaker from near bankruptcy, was arrested Nov. 19 on suspicion of falsifying financial reports. He also faces a breach of trust allegation, for which his detention had been approved previously through Jan. 1. The Tokyo District Court said in a statement that it had approved prosecutors' request for a 10-day extension. Ghosn has been charged in the first set of allegations, about under-reporting Ghosn's pay by about 5 billion yen ($44 million) in 2011-2015. Related: Top 10 automotive stories of 2018 Those close to Ghosn and his family say he is asserting his innocence as the alleged underreported amount of money was never really decided or paid, and Nissan never suffered any monetary losses from the alleged breach of trust. It is unclear when Ghosn may be released on bail. Tokyo prosecutors consider Ghosn, a Brazilian-born Frenchman of Lebanese ancestry, a flight risk. In Japan, formal charges can mean a suspect will get detained for months, sometimes until the trial starts, because of fears of tampered evidence. Some experts are puzzled that the allegations against Kelly and Ghosn are about underreporting income from Nissan. Nissan is in charge of filing such financial reports, not individual executives. Over the weekend, The New York Times published an article, "The Rise and Fall of Carlos Ghosn," describing his arrest as well as his almost legendary ascendance as the outsider who saved Nissan: "He was a person who was above the clouds," said one Nissan employee. But it's clear from the article that his autocratic style has long rankled the Japanese. In a sidebar, the NYT also covered accusations from Ghosn's daughters that Nissan had set him up for a fall, part of a mutiny against his explorations of a merger between Nissan and Renault. They point out that Hiroto Saikawa, the chief executive of Nissan, complained about the nature of the alliance in the first news conference following Ghosn's arrest. "Wow," daughter Caroline Ghosn said. "He didn't even waste a breath. He didn't even try to cover up the fact that the merger had something to do with this." The NYT articles included Ghosn family photos showing a softer side to the stern auto executive.
