The 100,000th EV sold in the US is... a Mitsubishi i-MiEV

The news here isn't that 100,000 EVs have been sold in the US, although that's quite the accomplishment. It's that the 100,000th car is a Mitsubishi i-MiEV - a car that takes nearly a full day to recharge on a standard outlet and can only travel about 62 miles per charge (according to the car's Monroney).
Jabs at the Mitsubishi aside, the fact that US dealers have moved 100,000 electric cars is made more impressive in that it's only been done since the latest generation of EVs arrived, typified by the Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric and aforementioned i-MiEV. Chronologically, that means roughly the last two years. It's a number that we can only expect to climb, as EVs gain a stronger foothold among manufacturers and consumers.
Plug In America, an EV advocacy group, crunched the numbers for a contest called #PIA100K, to find the lucky buyer, who would be given a ClipperCreek Level 2 charger (which takes the i-MiEV's recharge time down to just seven hours). The winner, Rich Salmon of Grand Bay, Alabama, picked up his i-MiEV from Pete Moore Mitsubishi.

Renault to alert prosecutors about Carlos Ghosn's wedding costs

PARIS — Renault has found evidence that it paid part of Carlos Ghosn's wedding costs and is preparing to turn the investigation over to prosecutors, two weeks after the French carmaker's scandal-hit chairman and chief executive was forced out. An internal probe established that a 2016 sponsorship deal with the Chateau de Versailles included a 50,000 euro ($57,000) personal benefit to Ghosn, the carmaker said on Thursday, confirming a report in Le Figaro. The carmaker replaced Ghosn on Jan. 24, more than two months after his arrest in Japan over allegations of financial misconduct uncovered by Renault's Japanese affiliate Nissan, which he also chaired. Renault began its own examination of payments to Ghosn within days of his detention but had not flagged any irregularities until now. Renault has discovered that "Mr Ghosn was accorded a personal benefit valued at 50,000 euros under the terms of a sponsorship contract with the Chateau de Versailles," the company said in a statement on Thursday. "Renault has decided to bring these findings to the attention of the judicial authorities." The office of Ghosn's Japanese lawyer Motonari Otsuru did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ghosn remains in detention in Tokyo with limited opportunity to respond publicly to allegations against him. Renault had agreed before the wedding to sponsor 2.3 million euros of Versailles renovations in return for a credit granting the carmaker services from the chateau worth 25 percent of that amount, or 575,000 euros, a person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Le Figaro reported that the chateau allowed Ghosn to host his wedding reception on its grounds in exchange for Renault's donations to the Versailles estate, resplendent home to France's last kings. The rental fee was deducted from Renault's credit for use of the Grand Trianon at Versailles on Oct. 8, 2016, when Ghosn and his second wife Carole hosted their wedding reception at the 17th-century palace, the source said. The event had already attracted public attention for its opulence and Marie Antoinette-themed costumes. 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV shown, full details coming October 28

The wait for details on the plug-in hybrid 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander are almost over. The company has been promising the model for quite a while, and it has been tight-lipped about details. But on October 28, the company will reveal nearly all before the SUV's U.S. launch in the second-half of 2022. In the meantime, Mitsubishi released photos of the plug-in model. As you can plainly see, it looks pretty much identical to the non-hybrid variant. The only real exception are the large hybrid badges placed on the doors and on the hatch. The white example in the photos also showcases a black contrast roof that's seemingly unavailable on non-hybrid Outlanders. The interior is also virtually unchanged. Mitsubishi also let slip one other interesting tidbit about the Outlander PHEV before the full reveal: it comes standard with a third row of seats. This is a change from the previous model that was two-row only. This is also interesting considering that Mitsubishi has previously said the new PHEV will have more battery capacity than the outgoing model. When the electrified Outlander has its official reveal in a couple weeks, we should have far more details on the powertrain. We're expecting it will continue to use a pair of electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rears. The engine will probably run mainly in a series-hybrid configuration, generating electricity for the motors, and only engaging the drivetrain under particular circumstances in which doing so would provide the necessary power and when it's efficient.
