WM Motors releases renderings based on Mitsubishi photos

An interesting gaffe has reared its head as WM Motors has published the first images depicting its new car portfolio. The renders showing Chinese electric vehicle startup's future cars appear to have been based on Mitsubishi Outlander press photos, as discovered by Electrek's Fred Lambert. It is one thing to show mere renders of future cars – that is certainly widely accepted, as the cars are planned to be launched in 2018 at the earliest – but it's the background that gives away how the renders are based on doctored Mitsubishi shots. Details are shared between the Outlander and WM Motors' rendering, with wheels, mirrors and doorhandles directly lifted off the Mitsu; in practice, the comparison shots become a pastime of "spot the similarities." The SUV is said to be designed by a former Bentley and Volkswagen designer, Sam Sun, but it is not yet clear whether he meant the production vehicle to share its decorative rear diffuser panel with a Mitsubishi. Perhaps these were work images never really meant for official publication, as they handily show the SUV's dimensions on the road. In addition to Electrek, Google seems to also be on the game, as a reverse image search on the VM Motor shots produces Mitsubishi suggestions. According to Car News China, which circulated the images, WM stands for either Weltmeister (world champion in German), or weima in Chinese, which means a powerful horse. The company is spearheaded by Freeman Shen, formerly of Geely, and the Suzhou factory is planned to produce 50,000 cars per year starting in 2018. There is talk of the cars featuring Huawei connectivity technology, with the hardware being produced together with the German companies Bosch and Siemens. Ghosn: Restoring Mitsubishi's reputation is biggest challenge

After news that Mitsubishi falsified its fuel economy data on every vehicle it has sold in Japan since 1991, and the tumble in the company's value that followed, the troubled carmaker has an unlikely savior. Nissan has confirmed it will purchase over one third of Mitsubishi's stock, or 34 percent. The stake is valued at $2.2 billion. Ghosn says making Mitsubishi a part of the Renault-Nissan alliance will save billions in development costs. But the merger certainly isn't without challenges. "The biggest challenge is to support Mitsubishi changing itself and growing and being profitable and restoring its reputation," said Ghosn. Nissan is a natural partner for Mitsubishi, and since the fuel economy scandal escalated from discrepancies in the data regarding Mitsubishi-manufactured, Nissan-badged Japan-market vehicles, it makes sense for the company to sweep in and save the day. Nissan itself is partially owned by Renault, and Nissan has a 15-percent stake in the French automaker. Mitsubishi's chairman, Osamu Masuko says that the merger was inevitable, that it "would have happened one day" anyway, according to the New York Times. Carlos Ghosn, chairman of both Nissan and Renault, is confident they will be able to turn Mitsubishi's fortunes around. 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross arrives in the U.S., pricing starts at $24,290

The first shipment of the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has arrived in the United States. Mitsubishi's new all-wheel drive compact crossover will go on sale in showrooms in early March with a starting price of $24,290, including a destination charge of $995. The Eclipse Cross debuted last year at the Geneva Motor Show with design cues borrowed from the XR-PHEV II Concept from 2015. The exterior design, which Mitsubishi says is inspired by a runner in the "Get set" position, includes a forward-raked rear window, wedge profile and deep side crease. Its starting price slots it just below competitors like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson, and it will come in four trim levels. Those include the base ES, which is the only trim available with front-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive, or S-AWC in Mitsubishi speak, adds only $600 to the base price. The LE S-AWC trim starts at $25,890 and the range-topping SE S-AWC starts at $27,390, though neither are eligible for options, so those are pretty much the prices customers will be dealing with. All trim levels are powered by a direct-injection turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four that makes 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The S-AWC acronym would stand for Super All-Wheel Control, Mitsubishi's system that manages torque supplied to each wheel for added straight-line stability and cornering performance. It offers three selectable driving modes — auto, snow and gravel — to enhance performance. Safety technology includes blind-spot warning and lane-change assist, forward collision mitigation and lane-departure warning, plus a system that automatically adjusts headlight brightness to the conditions. Interior features include an available 7-inch infotainment display with a touchpad controller, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus voice recognition via Google Assistant or Siri. There's also a full-color LCD head-up display available. A dual-pane sunroof and heated rear seats are some of the other niceties. The Eclipse Cross joins the brand's stable of crossovers, the Outlander and slightly smaller Outlander Sport, which helped Mitsubishi to a banner year in 2017, selling more than 100,000 vehicles for the first time in a decade.
